mini STROBE LIGHT ideas???

I'm looking to make a small strobe light unit. I once saw them in the Target bargain for $2.50 around "Back to School" time in the Fall. I was wondering if anyone had ideas on how to modify the strobe unit from a disposable camera and turn it into a working disco type strobe light?

How do I get a script to turn on a strobe light via USB

Hello, I am really at a loss how to do this so would appreciate any advice. I use Splunk and within it you can set for a script to run when an alert happens, so what I want to do is when an alert happens for a strobe light and a siren to sound. I haven't got a clue what kit is needed or the spec to do this? I suspect it will be some kind of a USB relay and obviously a strobe light and siren. Not sure how it should be wired up, I guess mains power (240v) to the strobe/siren positive and the negative connections to the USB relay? Then the scripting is there any free/sample scripts anywhere that can be used? Thanks for reading Guy

Home made strobe light

I've made a couple led strobe lights, well put assembled from kits really, and I was wondering if anyone has any suggests for sites etc. that might help me design a more customizable strobe light. It's really for costumes and the like.

My strobe light has a problem....

I have a miniature strobe light that I salvaged from a crappy Halloween decoration. I was planning on strapping it to my bike, just as an added accessory. Anyway, it worked fine, then is started being faulty. Now, it does not want to flash at all. It isn't charging the capacitor, so there is a problem somewhere before there. The strobe light has a cool option of either holding down a button or using an on/off switch. I cannot find any loose wires or shorts. Is there a way to tell if the flasher is broken? It hasn't been dropped, so I don't guess that that would be the problem. Any help would sure be appreciated!

Up for a challenge..?

So... I was wondering, would anyone be up for a challenge? Here it is: USB powered strobe lights, sound reactive. We got lots of geniuses here, but no one makes this little gadget. They have them on the back of the DS's X3, four lights in each side of the cartridge that react to the music that plays through the DS speakers. But, of course, not outside of a DS cartridge, apparently. Could you do it? Are you brave enough, smart enough, quick enough to be the first? Hm. Lets see it. If you do, post ideas and progress here. Seems like an interesting little project.

LED Strobe Light circuit, Best Place to ask the experts for L.E.D. Based Strobe Driver circuit

Iam new here, after searching on google and many electronic forums and all, I still can't find a LED Strobe light circuit, which would run off a 12v dc Car Battery. You Tube is loaded with lots of people displaying them, but can't find the circuit to make one for me.check what i want the LED columns to do for me.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O_FCks1c6E4orhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sE6JZ9fPVqEorhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u7kf1MnJ2R8Please help me with this, Iam a L.E.D. Fan and can't sleep, i dream of strobes and can't find one, huh.I've some Mods done to my car lights, I'll make some videos and share them with you all here soon. Thanks for your time :-)

emergency led or strobe lights

Does any one have a way to construct a L.E.D flashing warning light or maybe strobe light for emergency uses? I am a paramedic in a rural area and some times have to use my own vehicle to respond. Warning device needs to be relatively compact and low power draw. i just want to put red led's in my grill and maybe strobes in my head and tail lights. they make the high watt strobes(50w-80w) with the hide away grommets but they are expensive and the power supplies aint cheap. is there a reason i cant take apart a regular home strobe and wire it into a poxer inverter? thanks for any info steve

Flashing LED usb

I'm not really sure where to start with this, but in the end I's like an LED strobe where I can control how fast is flashes precisely (for example 5khz). My Ideas so far is you have an LED hooked up to my laptop via usb with a simple program to control the speed and how many times it flashes. Right now I've got LED's and usb's and 100ohm resisters if i need them. From what I've read I don't think I can control the usb port's power so I'm assuming I need a driver board or something? I'd love some help with this but I assume I've been too vague, mostly because I'm not sure what i'm talking about. Any help I can get would be amazing. Thanks

Arduino Strobe Controller for bike lights

Hey guys, this is where I am selling kits to build my ultimate Arduino strobe controller system. Read about the whole project here! Bare PCB alone (comes with a BOM for population): $8 Complete Kit with everything but the light modules and battery charger: $50 These prices include shipping within the continental USA. If you're in the US, I will include two 18650 Li-ion cells with the kit. If you are outside the USA, shipping will cost more but I can't ship the batteries, which works out so the price will be the same! You will still need to acquire a charger and supplies for building your light modules, no matter where you live. PM me if you are interested in buying a kit!

IR triggered LED strobe

hey guys, im looking to build a IR triggered LED strobe. in the smallest possible size i can. it doesnt have to be from scratch so if anyone knows of a cheap trigger on a toy i could use that would be great. im looking to build an IR triggered strobe for an airsoft gun i have. the idea is to strobe an led (most likely a UV LED) every time an airsoft pellet trips the trigger. these pellets are glow in the dark so in essence i will be making my own homemade airsoft tracer system. these units are about $70 so if i could do this for free or much cheaper i would be thrilled. i know there are things out there i can use but im drawing a blank right now. i have makers block or something. here are a couple links to YouTube vids that explain the concept and more along the lines of what it should be like. at about 1:50 in the top video theres is a good demonstration on its workings. <br> <br> any part suggestions or ideas would be awesome.

"flasher" or strobe or similar for battery

Hi, I'm kind of new to this and don't know what I want, but can describe it.  I'm looking for a small, inexpensive device that will turn a battery off and on.  I have a battery powered electromagnet that moves a clamp.  I want to make something like Clamps from Futurama where the clamp just opens and closes on its own about once every two seconds.  I've got the battery, battery cover, and wire leads on that end.  I've got the clamp, wires, and normal on/off switch on the other.  I just need the bit in the middle.  I can use a regular on off switch, but I don't want to have keep constantly flicking it off and on. All of my google searches end up pointing to either strobe lights, car electronics, or Christmas lights.  None of which will really work. Any ideas of what this would be or where to get a couple cheap? Thanks!

modify cd player to zoetrope

I am looking to modify a portable cd player into a zoetrope. this is fairly easy to do, but i have zero electronics knowledge and thought it would be good to ask if it is even possible.here is an old zoetropehttp://courses.ncssm.edu/gallery/collections/toys/html/exhibit10.htmi just looking for a one second loop of animation to occur.cds spin at about 500 rpm - which when you do the math is about 8x too fast. so how can i modify the cd player to slow down?i know that i could get a strobe light and try variations on the strobe, but since the rate of cd player spin alters from center to far edge (goes more slowly) the strobe light would quickly get out of sync.any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

LED board ideas?

So first and foremost, I'm new to DIY electronics and the forum, so apologies in advance, i was linked to this forum through google.(if this isnt the correct forum to ask or against TOS apologies in advance.) What im looking to do is make some sort of LED controller, that allows me to program strobe on/off delay (set how long the lights on, as well as how much time between each strobe)  Not too sure where I would need to begin im assuming, and arduino board would be the best start. I laready own a bunch of these (http://www.emazinglights.com/rave-microlights/elite/elite-multi-mode/elite-matrix-chip.html)  I'm just wanting to tinker around and make my own larger scale ones to incorporate into household items, and still have some of the same functionality.  I am not too concerned with size or anything like that either.

anyone know the maximum flash rate of an LED?

I need to pulse a light very quickly (think really fast strobe) and by very quickly, I mean at about 350Hz. I need the light to be on for ~1ms or less at a time (maximum acceptable length is 1.517ms) I'd like to operate at 5v or less, and have a nice wide dispersion pattern... Is this possible with a standard LED? With this sort of PWM, will I even see the light? Is there a better alternative to an LED? help will be greatly appreciated

Prop Help!!

Hi, I am working as a crew member for the musical Little Shop of Horrors. We need to trigger a confetti blast, a strobe and a sound clip to play with an 8th of second of each other. I was thinking of using a paintball gun (without paint balls) hooked up to a solenoid (or motor with a cam) linked to a computer controlled relay. The plan would be is to use a some wading to launch the confetti out of the gun and have the strobe only blink once right as the sound was triggered. Also we are not allowed to use real pyrotechnics because the madison fire department sucks (safety first, i know). So I guess we could use ether a paintball gun, or an air compressor that is located off stage with a really long line. Also it needs to all fit on a cart the size of a bed side table. So, how should we control them? Computer controlled relay or something else? Also if possible we would like to make the whole thing go off remotely. Either using RF or inferred. Worst case scenario is a small wire that singers/dance wont trip over and die. All suggestions and comments are welcome!! Please comment with any ideas no matter how simple of difficult!! Thanks in advance.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Joe Rowley

what do you use to protect your rechargeable batteries while charging?

I got this off ebay (see attached image).  But it just flashes extremely fast between red and blue when charged (which is obnoxious since I can see it - you would not want this charging in your room at night, it's like a crazy strobe).  Another from a different seller just lights both red and blue at the same time.  Does anybody have other suggestions for what to use?  I don't need it to have lights.  Thanks.

remote controlled led project

Hello there, I am looking for someone who can make me a simple led project for a costume. What it would consist of is 2 groups of leds that can both be switched on by remote control. They would need to strobe simultaneously and also alternate between either group. I am not looking to spend alot on this as i think it should be easy for someone who knows what they are doing, but i will compensate you accordingly. I can give you more information on what i am looking for if you are interested.  Thanks for your time and i hope to hear from someone soon, thanks

Need help with DMX512 to Analog 0-10VDC Decoder

I am looking to *update* some old strobe lights that my theater uses to be able to control them through our DMX control board.  They have 2 analog 0-10V inputs to control the flash rate and the intensity.  I am looking for the simplest solution as we do not have a lot of money to throw at this project.  I have some experience in electronics as well as working with arduino, but not enough to tackle this job by myself.   Any thoughts on this would be appreciated!  Attaching the control spec sheet. Sound controlled stage lighting

Ladies and Gents:I am seeking help from you guys. I am in a band and want to build something that can control some lighting we have. I am looking for it to be controller by the drummers kick pedal or my bass. Ideally, everytime a certain sound is created i want the light to go on then off. Kinda like a strobe light but only at certain times (the kick pedal of when a certain sound comes from the bass). If you guys have any ideas, let me know. Here is an example of how I'd like it to work. Thanks for any help.

Lightning lighting

OK I got one for you all! What I would like to achieve is a realistic lightning effect for Halloween displays. I've tried some different ideas, but none can give me a realistic effect. Most produce a timed effect (2 sec on, 2 secs off, 2 on, 2 off etc...) What I think I would need would be a circuit board or something like that, that would produce a random current to a strobe light source (ie. 1 sec on, 3 secs off, 2 on, 6 off, 1 on 5 off etc...) Could this be done? I've searched all over the internet and haven't been able to come up with anything. Thanks! Wes

Remember when Radio Shack sold electronic components? And didn't suck?

I just went into a Radio Shack for the first time in quite a while, and I was struck by the glaring lack of components and project kits. Seems like all they carry these days is a bunch of consumer electronics that you can get cheaper anywhere else. It made me sad. Of course, last time I went into The Shack looking for anything more complicated than a pack of batteries you could also still see music videos on MTV, so there's that. I once got an awesome strobe light kit from Radio Shack, and I remember they carried photoelectric burglar alarm kits and a bunch of other neat junk. Anybody else miss the cool stuff?

EL wire help

Hello, I was wondering whether someone could shed some light on this. I'm making a coat with a design in EL wire. I want to use two colors, and I want to have them both on the strobe setting, so that they flash opposite the other.. so one color being on while the other is off. However I may have to use more than one 'spool' of wire per color. I have a bunch of 9 ft. segments already hooked up to batteries.  You may have to bear with me, I know very little about electronics.. But is there a way I can hook up the segments of one color to each other so that they all flash simultaneously? Or is it worth it just to get longer segments/ make my own, and would the battery have to be much larger in that case? Thanks, any input is greatly appreciated!

gate driver for power mosfet

I am strobing columns of LEDs at high currents very quickly (100mA for each LED, for 100us) with p-channel mosfets and LED drivers. The p-channel fets that can handle that sort of current (100mA * 24 LEDs) have gate capacitances of 1000pF and up. My microcontroller can't push too much current to the gate too quickly, which would result in the mosfet losing power to slow switch (and ghosting in the LEDs). I KNOW that some sort of gate driver buffer ic exists, i just can't seem to find one. Everything I am finding is for high-voltage or high-current applications and motor-driving. I just need something that will drive my gates at 200-400mA, and since i need 9 of them, i'd like them to be cheap. I dont need any of these motor-driver ICs or 3A gate driver chips... Can anyone help me out?

An Alarm Clock Idea - No Lights, No Sound

I'm a pretty deep sleeper, and I don't wake up very fast in the mornings, which is bad since I ride the school bus to school. I set my alarm clock, with a high volume, but it still doesn't wake me very good. I've thought of trying to make an alarm that flashes a strobe light, something like a deaf person might use, but didn't think it would work very good. So, my idea now is to think of a way to make an alarm clock that gives pulsating shocks when it goes off. I have absolutely (well, 99%) no idea how to connect it up, nor how to produce the shocks. I'm thinking a shock with high voltage, but low current, like static electricity. I figure that should wake me. Do y'all have any ideas, or better suggestions? Also, do you think that the shocks (if usable) would cause any dangerous effects on my health? Thanks!

Cool things to build in a cardboard maze?

I am in charge of building a cardboard maze for my churches "Harvest Party" (basically a safer, family oriented alternative for trick or treating). I have been doing this for a couple years, and last year we build a maze about 80x60 feet big (all out of cardboard an duct tape!). So now we are starting to plan out this years maze. I was just wondering if anyone had some really cool ideas of stuff to put into the maze, or an interesting structure/passageway to add to the maze. Not sure about sizes yet, but I think this year we can expand the maze to about half the size of a basketball court or larger (so size does not matter). In the past we have done blacklights, strobes, etc. Please no ideas about skeletons/ghosts/hauntings. This maze is for kids, and is an alternative to "scarier" halloween traditions. Keep this in mind as you post please. Thanks, I am looking forward to your replies! A907

need help with an led string for a lit up version of cornhole.

I'm trying to build a lit up version of cornhole using plexiglass. I'll need a string of 140 something led lights on one circuit, for the outer perimeter. they just need to be lit solid and hopefully be able to be powered by a battery. then I'd like to have another string that will operate when triggered by a bag that goes in the hole. I want them to strobe leading up to the hole with 27 leds running up, then a group of leds going around the hole operating as the last running light. these would operate only after someone scores. I know next to nothing i need to know in order to accomplish this. Does anyone have any advice for the 140 something string first? Probably best I start with the easy stuff. I need a lot of help here, but I'll really appreciate it. When I say I need a lot of help I mean, I even forgot the basics as in resistors and voltages. I'm using 5mm leds with a max current of 20mA Continuous, 50mA peak for 10% Pulse Width.

re NASA's Anti Nausea glasses DIYable? I need help because I can't ride in cars without being sick.

I saw a show on the science channel about how NASA is using stroboscopic glasses to reduce the incredible nausea that astronauts get. This is really interesting to me because I have Graves Disease, and the worst symptom is chronic nausea. Right now, it hits randomly when I am in vehicles. Yesterday I had to take a three hour car drive, and white knuckled it the whole way home, trying not to be sick. I have a few links to a paper about the glasses, and to the patent that explains how they work. http://www.docstoc.com/docs/2982780/STROBOSCOPIC-VISION-AS-A-TREATMENT-FOR-SPACE-MOTION-SICKNESS-Millard http://www.patentstorm.us/patents/6932090/description.html I follow directions really well, and could put it together if someone could tell me what I needed, and how. My electronics experience is limited to a few LED throwies. (I've got a Make: electronics kit I keep meaning to play with, but haven't yet.) I'm not scared of soldering circuits. I'm just not sure how to put them in order, or read the schematics. I wouldn't even consider this if I wasn't just desperate to be able to be in a motor vehicle without tossing my cookies after an hour. Long trips are agonizing with the nausea, and if this helps, I'd wear it no matter what it looks like in every vehicle I have to be on. I really want to do this with my own two hands because then if it breaks I can fix it, or adjust it as needed. Plus, it would be just damn cool to build it. I don't know if that's possible, though, because I'm not sure what I am looking at needing to do to make this. Any opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Home Security

I'm planning on setting up a simple home security system for my home. I was thinking of using Wireless IP webcams, placed in strategic locations, monitored by software with a motion sensing function. I would tweak the sensitivity and add null zones as needed. I would probably only use two or three cameras to start out, and have the software save ten or twenty seconds of video when the motion sensor was triggered. EASY. Once I have the motion sensing bugs worked out, I'd like for the software to email/text message me. I think most of the security programs for webcams out there can do this. I've had good experiences with one program that also let you run an image server so you can view current images through the internet. The TRICKY part is how I would like to set up the network of wireless IP webcams. What I was hoping to do is have one machine that was dedicated to running the cameras. My goal was to use my two wireless routers so that I could have two seperate networks, one for the cameras, and one for all the other devices (laptops, desktops, game systems, printers). My question is, do I connect the router for the cameras to the computer that will run the security software, or do I plug that router into the router for the other devices? I've never worked with two of these small LinkSYS routers at the same time, so I'm not sure if I should be trying to create some sort of network bridge, or if I would maybe connect the camera router and camera computer via the WAN port of the router, since all of the camera images would be displayed on a image/web server running on that computer, accessed from the internet via the other router. Also, I've never worked with wireless IP webcams, so if there is any sort of quirck that I should know about that your average instructables user couldn't figure out, any help or advice with that would be much appreciated as well. Thanx Tony P.S. Eventually, I'd like to add in a strobe that would blink and a siren that would sound for a short time. I think I could figure this part out with "Pico Servers" and some relays.

Remotely controlled starship

Hi,I hope this question is appropriate to this forum, I'm new here, but I'm about to start building a PolarLights 1/350th scale Enterprise. If you're unfamiliar with the kit, it's styrene, large and very cool. Get one to express your innner geek.Anyway, I want to hang it using steel wires, painted flat black and it will be displayed against a black background, with the illusion, I hope of it floating in space. I plan to run power to the model via the wires, like those little track bar lights you might find in a coffee shop. All the electronics for the ship will be inside (it's a big kit) and I have the schematics to make the lights blink and the photon torpedos fire. But I don't want the torpedoes to constantly fire. I'd like to be able to push a button and have them fire. But with only three wires going to the model, I can't control the navigation lights, strobes, impulse engines, spotlights, etc.I could install DIP switches in some inconspicuous spot, but how much cooler and geekier to trigger the effects from an infrared remote control shaped like a tricorder?I have found a company that sells a remote (I'll have to hack it into a tricorder), a sensor and a PIC preprogrammed chip to decipher the remote codes (http://kitsrus.com/pdf/k92.pdf), but the schematic shows that all the outputs are high. Pressing a button on the remote sets the appropriate output low.So, can anyone suggest what I can do to trigger the effects? They sell a more expensive and I'm sure much heavier kit with relays (http://kitsrus.com/pdf/k142.pdf) that actually reverses the outputs -- pushing a button sets an output to high -- using inverters. (They also sell a kit with four relays, using a UHF transmitter -- a car remote.)But I'd like to do this without a relay. I know very little about electronics -- just enough to follow a schematic and wire it, hoping there are no mistakes in the schematic. But I thought a transistor, like an SCR thyristor, could be used as a switch. Could I take the first kit I mentioned, add the inverter to switch the output to high when a button is pressed, and use the thyristor to basically be a solid state switch? Essentially doing the work of the DIP switches?I fear the 5V outputs of the PIC module would be too high for the thyristor and maybe that's why the relays are necessary.I appreciate any help and advice.JenniferPS All the kits I mentioned are at http://kitsrus.com/kits.html
