Is this stupid? Answered

If you know about those little banger thingies that you throw on the floor and they bang, what are they composed of? I had opened one up and I had found rocks.... also I had set light to one of those nifty things and BOOM! Why did that happen? They combust when they hit the ground, or is my match at a really high temp.?

ARGH!!!! STUPID COMPUTER!!!!

Ok, get this: I just bought my new computer 2 months ago from this weird dealer for around 800 bucks. Then these problems started occurring: Internet connection s clearly on, but internet wont process, I have a hard time logging in here, word wont work, PowerPoint screws up, and sometimes when I'm just sittin' there minding my own business, it turns off and can't be turned on! Is there a way I could fix this? Have I been ripped off? Should I get a MacBook instead?

Uhhh, Soo Stupid!

Well, i'm not allowed to play knex for a while, cuz i shot my 11 year old bro. Let me tell you the story: I built a cheap block trigger, with  a red firing pin (sorta like the one in the picture) and shot his hand from a good distance (6 feet) and he started crying. Get This- The gun had two really stretchy elastics on it, and it couldn't even shoot across my room! I shot my hand from 0.5 feet and hardly felt it! Now my knex is taken away!

Is Google Making Us Stupid?

That's the title of Nicholas Carr's latest article (and the cover story) for the Atlantic. I just finished it and it's an interesting article discussing how Google has been reprogramming our brains. I haven't been able to find a copy online yet, but the gist of it is that since the internet makes things so easy to find, we no longer are able to read deeply and critically; we just skim. I found that interesting. You can check out his blog at roughtype.com.

Pictures cut off

I started writing a new Instructable and noticed that when I use the preview function the pictures are cut off and therefore weirdly off centre. For some of the pictures it doesn't really matter, but some like I said look weird (as shown in the pictures). I don't see why there is a need to cut the pictures. Is this just an error and will it look better once the instructables is published?

Electricity Recycler? Stupid Question?

I was laying in bed a few minutes ago thinking about my idea to change the world, as i do every night before bed. I thought why can't or hasn't anyone made a electricity recycling generator? like why can't you take say..... a car alternator and make it produce enough electricity to run a small motor to spin the alternator as well as have enough energy left over to power devices? and then why couldn't this theory be applied to large scale generators? or why couldn't you electricly power a vehicle and somehow turn the wheels into basically 4 big alternators that generate power for the vehicle? going back to the alternator idea, is there no way to make an alternator type generator to use say 25 - 50% of its generated power to power itself and the other 50% to power devices? please point out the flaws its hurting my brain

Help! mouse is being stupid!

HELP! My mouse has a clicking problem. In that; whenever i try to click, it doesn't work, and i find myself having to click multiple times with some force in order to get a result, but it's not consistent. Sometimes, it works straight off, and sometimes it takes upwards of 20 clicks, in order to get my computer to do anything. The problem's also isolated to only the left button, the right one's fine. I reckon it's just dirt or something in the mouse, but it's really inconvenient. Any ideas on what i can do to fix it? can i fix it? To give you something pretty to look at, here's a brass cog: Thanks for all the replies. I've just had the case off, and cleaned the rollers. I looked at the switch and there was no dirt packed around it. I clicked the switch without the case on and it still didn't work, which leads me to believe that it's actually the switch that's damaged, and therefore it's not worth trying to fix.

What would be a good portable amp chip? Answered

I'm making a simple portable amp, and i'm searching for a good chip. I've already tried LM386 didn't like the sound and power output. TA7368P good sound, but the low frequencies and the power consumption weren't great. (also 741, TL082 but they aren't ideal for amps.) Now i'm with TDA1015 so far the sound is great, power output also great, the consumption is sort of good. Can someone tell me a good mono (or stereo) amp chip that has good power output (>2W) and it has low power consumption. I know it sounds sort of stupid but iv'e seen some great sounding amps with low power consumption and high power output in an old BoomBox. But it was covered by a big heatsink and when i removed it the IC was blank. So if anyone can help thank you in advance.

Lack of experience = trouble ... do you think, you can help ???

Hi ... it's me again, with my stepper motors. Thanks to your previous answers, I was able to find out, that these are really stepper motors and I bought a motor shield for arduino to be able to operate them. I made a successful experiment with one of them (on second picture) ... but when I tried to modify the second motor for "bredboard use" I made a disaster. There where 4 pins that were melted in a plastic, that holds them in fixed position. But when I was trying to desolder them, by using a desoldering wick ... and heated one pin to much that it melted the plastic, it fell out and it got loose from the wire. As you can (hardly see) on the first picture ... I ended with an ULTRA thin wire that is really short(<2mm) and I don't know how to save/fix the motor. Any suggestions ??? Thank you very much in advance. Zholy

Now, to me, nothing says democracy like corporate interests sending thugs to polling places. But what makes this possible the stupidest offer ever. I liked the TV-B-Gone Instructable, it was entertaining and informative. Now I wonder if one could "snipe" one's neighbors' stereo set while they are playing Slipknot full blast at 3 am? Quick (And stupid) gear motor question Answered

So here is my situation, i plan on building (https://www.instructables.com/id/Beginners-guide-to-building-Arduino-robots-with-Bl/) and i was about to order all the parts and i wondered, why there are so many types of gear motors! my current understanding is the higher "1st" digit (ex 1000:1)means the motor is more accurate and precise and slow. So does that mean one with a low number first (ex 10:1) would be faster? please tell me if i am wrong. So i would like a FAST gear motor for my robot, could anyone post me a link to a good fast gear motor. Much appreciated!!!

A Quest!

OK - first off, hello everyone!! I've not posted an Instructable for perhaps 4 years now, but I have done a fair few things in the intervening time (shortened life story to follow - if you just want details about the project, scroll down.) Not sure when, but in early childhood I started playing around with K'NEX. I'm sure you'll all agree thats acceptable for a kid of about 5. Several years progressed before I discovered the art of K'NEX weaponry - which led me to create my first ever (and widely crap) Instructable. My fascination for things that you have to put together to make them work has not faded - I have become involved heavily in the Greenpower Race Series for Schools (www.greenpower.co.uk, if anyone's interested - I'm Rob on the forum) and next year will probably be my last truly competitive one - I'm building the one for next year over the summer. Having looked for a couple months about what I can do next, I've come up with a bit of a foolhardy quest  that sevearl people have probably already done. The Project (hello, if you've just scrolled down) is to design, build and drive on the road an Electric, 2-seater, Hardtop Sports car with the following features: 85 MPH top speed (15 more than the Motorway limit), 500 mile range, flash charging capabilities, various mod-cons (e.g. a windscreen), some luggage spaces and a price tag of as little as possible. I'm probably going to be designing the chassis on a 3D CAD program (either Solidworks or AutoCAD) over the next couple of years, as well as getting enough money, sourcing parts, and designing the PWM (Pulse Width Modulation, controls how long the motor is on for in any given second) system. Here is a list of what I see as I need to do: Source electric motor Source batteries + charging system Design chassis Source parts for chassis - Welder, rear differential, steering components, bits of Aluminium/Steel (haven't decided which) box/tube. Build rolling chassis. Anyhow, I will be making an instrucable and will hopefully publish it once I'm done. The whole thing will consist of my entire design process and building processes. Everything from chassis stress testing to choosing what type of dials to have. Hope that was mostly interesting! Rob Hopeful Instructabler

computer RAM upgrade stupid questions?

Well as it turns out, 8GB of RAM with Chrome and Kdenlive video editing software open at the same time causes Ubuntu to max out the RAM on my machine, and the machine will start to become very sluggish, eventually freezing for several minutes at a time with a high chance of never unfreezing. This used to be a very common issue that would occur with only google chrome open, due to a memory leak with my Gmail tabs. If I catch this sluggishness and eventually full system hang early enough, I can recover from it by entering CLI mode on ubuntu (alt+F1) and killing "chrome." After researching this problem a bit more, I created a swap file, since I do not have a SWAP partition, this helped delay the eventual unrecoverable system hang, but did not entirely fix the issue. I also tried different "swappiness" values, and also learned about this command "sudo sysctl -w vm.min_free_kbytes=400000" which supposedly forces a set amount of space to be unused in ubuntu. Looking at the system monitor this appears to do what it says, preventing a >95% RAM use, forcing swap to be used instead, and this was initially promising as it seemed to reduce the full system hangs, but created more small bugs, like freezing and stuttering wildly with buffered youtube videos, or playback in Kdenlive. A reboot seemed to have fixed that issue, but I'm not sure if those settings stuck around. ANYWAY; I guess there is no denying it, I simply do not have the RAM necessary for my workload anymore. I DO use intel HD integrated graphics, which uses the system RAM for graphics processing, so I wonder, will faster RAM allow slightly better graphics performance? My understanding is that GDDR is optimized for sheer bandwidth, not latency, while system DDRx RAM is optimized for latency. Does this mean my system will benefit more from high clock rate and high latency setting on a given RAM set, or is low clock and low latency RAM better? Most "gaming" orented builders seem to say RAM is not important other than esthetics and reliability. Also, is there a difference between buffered and unbuffered RAM?  Currently, the specs for my RAM are: Geil EVO Veloce GEV38GB1600C9DC 4GBx2 This RAM I got for "free" with my motherboard, and it seems to work with the following settings in the BIOS: . . .1600MHz @ 9-9-9-28 timings, 1.5V . . .1333MHz @ 9-9-9-24 timings, 1.5V . . .1800MHz @ 11-12-11-33 timings, 1.65V These are the fastest possible settings that will boot. Note, I was not too happy with the 1800MHz overclock, especially considering my computer was acting strange and crashed during an update, corrupting Ubuntu. I was able to repair the installation of some corrupted packages halfway installed. It did not seem to make any difference in some games on ubuntu, which is how I tested stability/speed. I have also had issues where while the BIOS system check passes, ubuntu puck errors all over me when I clocked at 1600MHz @ 9-9-9-24, even at 1.65V. There is really no overclocking this currently overpriced and mediocre RAM to any degree. The three settings above were the best settings I could get. The RAM I am currently looking at getting is: http://www.amazon.com/Crucial-Ballistix-PC3-12800-240-Pin-BLS2K4G3D169DS1J/dp/B00ZRG009S/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie;=UTF8&qid;=1452056996&sr;=1-1&keywords;=BLS2K4G3D169DS1J It is the most affordable, and states that it is 4GBx2 of 1600MHz 9-9-9-24 RAM. I think I can underclock it to match the speed of the rest of my RAM and I think it should work well alongside. What do you guys think? I do not want to have to buy the $67 16GB if I can help it.

Neither of which I have much of. Nor do I have money to get resources. Share your most embarrassing or funniest story.

Confess! You have been guilty of a faux pas at some point in your life. My "dope!" moment was when I responded one night to a work order to the campus police station. I went to the officer's lockers and saw what looked like a small cologne bottle. The bottle was painted black and had no label. I sprayed the contents directly on my face thinking that I was going to smell good. I did not know that it was mace and, that I just sprayed it in my face. I was incapacitated for a few minutes. I was found by my coworkers, blinded and disoriented, trying to find my way around! I was the butt of a joke for quite a while. Well, when you too stop laughing, you may start confessing.

Anyone else live in an apartment with terrible neighbors?

Let's whine about it together, shall we?The man living next to me seems quite nice whenever I see him outside his apartment. He was dating someone (I had seen them together a few times), and I'm guessing they broke up recently, since all I hear coming from his apartment now is him screaming on the phone. They basically just call eachother and scream and try their hardest to hurt the other person. What is even the point? Why not just hang up? I don't really understand. So for the last hour all I've heard is a mixture of the following:"You're scandalous! I know all about you!""You're never gonna give a man a baby! You're never gonna have a baby!""SHUT THE ---- UP, CHANTRELL!""i never want you to call here again!""Stop calling me, Chantrell!""YOU DON'T HAVE ANYTHING! And obviously I'm everything cause you're calling me all the time!"...sigh.I think I'm going to have to move into the kitchen or living room. I can't type my paper with all the screaming, and he keeps scaring the hell out of me when he starts screaming. :|But if I move into the living room, chances are that I'll hear the drunken rednecks when they come home. Yay!
