I have laptop with a dying seagate drive, and before it dies completely, I got a hitachi drive as a replacement. My question is, how can I copy the disk exactly onto the new drive, keeping all files and programs intact so I don't have to re-install windows. I'm guessing I can't just copy and pasts, but maybe using xcopy? I have plenty of other computers and cables to use for transferring if needed.

I just ran across this thing:http://www.coudal.com/swapmeat/You send them something you made, and they send you something they made. I always have stuff I made that for various reasons I don't want to keep - it's not quite up to my tweaky-high quality standards, or I changed my mind about the color, or it doesn't fit and I don't feel like working on it any more.Normally I would try this first and report my experiences, but since the deadline is Aug 31, I might not have time to ship and receive AND write up! So there it is, not a recommendation but a Mere link. I'll comment here once I've sent them something and again if I get anything back. I plan to send them a Tribble.Has anyone heard of this? Did you send anything? Did you get anything back?

I just heard about imgr doing sort of a secret Santa type gift exchange for valentines day and thought that was a super cool idea. While we're probably too late for v day, maybe that would be a fun thing to put together for a "spring cleaning" maker trade. There's a lot of amazing talent on this site and I bet some of us could definitely stand to clear our workbenches of surplus or unsold projects. Each person would get the name and address of another member and send something they make, and receive something from a different person in return. I'm happy to help organize it, but I'm not sure about the best way to assign gifts since we can't just draw names out of a hat. Suggestions? And do we divide it by country so nobody has to deal with international postage, or leave it wide open? I welcome ideas and definitely would like to gauge interest.

I am working on converting my macbook into a tablet PC, and I have everything pretty much figured out but...I was wondering if there is a way, or better yet, how i could swap the 13inch LCD with a smaller LCD.I have the LCD from a 12inch powerbook g4 on hand, and would like to use it instead of the standard 13inch screen. This will allow me more room to relocate things inside the tablet, as well as allow better fitting for everything. It will also help with the purchase of the touch screen as most touch panels I find are 12 or 15 inch.Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello! I have gotten a few instructables shirts from some recent contests and have 4 of the same burnt orange color. They are quite lovely but I was hoping to diversify my color collection. So if anyone has ones they would be willing to trade feel free to post of send a message! Mine are all mediums and I would really like to trade for other mediums. Thanks!

I'm offering a big fat bag full of tea envelopes to someone who is willing to send me... something fun. Make me an offer and see if I'll bite. I probably will. I'm in the Netherlands, but this offer is international. The envelopes are empty: there is no tea included in this offer. Many people like to use these colourful envelopes to make stuff, like cards. The picture is only a sample. The envelope you'll be getting will really be fat. There will be different tea brands present, and different flavours, but also many of the same brand and flavour so you can make a pattern. You'll find mainly Dutch and German brands. Any takers?

My skills include: computer OS (aka Ubuntu), misc. little crafts, and a basic knowledge of woodworking, paracord, and electronics. Here is a link to my featured Instructable What I'd like to make for someone: maybe a kool lookin' clock, from an instructable on this site =D I'd be willing to make this size gift package for someone (choose all that apply): (S,M,L): I will make a smallish medium object I'd be willing to receive a smaller or larger size gift package from someone than the one I make for someone else: sure! What I like: electronics, computer stuff, gadgets, soccer, steam plunk, jewelry (necklaces/bracelets), Antique/refurbished items. What I don't like: taxidermy, food items, lawn gnomes, pink/girly items I absolutely can't have: alcohol, and I cannot have scallops due to allergies, but I doubt that is anyone's gift idea ;) Type of thing I'd love to receive: I would like if it fits into one of my interests categories, or a surprise would be nice! Would anyone like to swap a 2012 Jaycar Electronics catalog ( brand new from store ) for a Radioshack catalog if there is one? Jaycar catalog contains roughly 500 pages and costs $3.95AU. It would interest me to see prices and component / device differences between countries. If Radioshack catalog is not available, any similar will do fine as long as it has components, tools, devices etc. Standard electronics. www.jaycar.com.au if anyone wants to see the catalog online ( but I HATE online catalogs! )

I had a power outage some time ago, and needed to use the internet for university search. i was with my notebook, EEEPC 1000H with 4 hours of batt. my internet is over a cable and it uses 12V for power; i had a cable for my external dvd reader (ad/dc pin to USB)that fitted into the modem, and i plugged it into my usb. it worked very well. however, the notebook started to heat up slowly, and the battery indicator dropped from 4:00 to 2:00; this was safe to do? could it damaged my notebook? how can be possible 12V into 5V?

Muff and I are in t3h (hehe) process of trading a few parts, he sent me some stuff I needed, I'm going to send him some stuff that he'll need.Anyway, it brought up an idea: An Electronic Swap Program! It'd work where you'd send stuff that you have tons of to someone, and they'd send you stuff they have. This is really a great way to get stuff you need -- and the parts end up being cheaper, since you try to send parts that you have in bulk. (Its cheaper to buy in 1K quanities than 1)I'm just trying to see if theres interest. The plan, ATM, would be something like this:Send parts and $2** to me I use $2** to send you a mix of what people, and myself, have donated. You get parts and are happy. (happy or die!)**Outside of USA: I'd probably have you guys go online to our postal service's site, and buy the postage for me, and send it to me to print out. Or just send me more monies.(You end up paying postage both ways)$2 is just a guess on how much it'd cost. Muff's package to me cost $1.14 -- so $2 seems about right. If you're interested, or have a suggestion, lemme know!

Hi folks. I have a fairly old but still quite serviceable Thompson Euro Classic electric bike that runs on a 36v lead acid electric battery pack with a brushless motor. I've just been offered a 36v lithium ion bike battery that I would love to use but I'm not too sure if it would be the right choice, my main reason for the change is simply weight consideration, the current battery pack comprises of three 12v batteries and weighs in at a hefty 28lb the replacement weighs a little under 4lb, this would very obviously make quite a difference in the bikes 87lb overall weight. However weight isn't the only consideration, I would like to extend the range of my bike and with a little work and some suitable wiring and a couple of switches I could quite easily use the battery as a second power source for longer rides, I fitted a large plastic tool box onto a rear carrier when I first bought the bike which would easily accommodate the battery or I could possibly even add an external carrier for it behind the seat, the current battery is good for around fifteen to twenty miles depending on how many hills I hit & how much I feel like pedalling, I hoping that an additional battery would double the range meaning I could rely on it to visit nearby towns without having to worry about finding somewhere I can give the battery a booster charge. My main worry is about damage to the motor, I know very little about electric bike motors and having read so many stories about these batteries suffering from overheating problems and even catching fire I am more than a little concerned I could damage to my only transport, I usually ride motorcycles but thanks to a couple of health issues I'm currently grounded so apart from walking which can be pretty limiting this bike is my only way to get around without spending a fortune on public transport I'm looking for advice from people who know about electric bikes and their motors who could give me some simple advice in layman's terms on how to proceed, please don't blind me with all sorts of technical jargon as it really wouldn't help, I'm not stupid it just isn't my field of expertise. Thanks in advance for your help. NG.

Have two identical Hammer 1 TB units; initially, worked wells, decent speed. After loading about 300gb on one, it failed to be recognized by my desktop. Given the price, I am considering opening it, going into the Toshiba HD inside and swapping the media to the second Hammer drive that functions well. Any tips, advice, prior experience on media swap on Toshiba HD's? Suggestions, screams, humor, all are welcome!

Short story: How hard would it be to drop a new, maybe flex-fuel, oh-say-maybe-an Impala engine into a C3 Corvette? Long story: I love Corvettes. A lot. I have decided to save up enough money over the next two years to purchase a C3 (1968-82) Corvette, and bring it up to modern motoring glory. I've been poking around, and looks like I can get a POS for about 10-15 grandios americanos. ANYWAY I'd like to replace the old engine with a nice new fuel injected, computer controlled, more efficient engine then whatever is inside. All I'm really after is the body. Frumpy 70's interior and matching engine numbers be screwed. My question to you: Several new Chevys are flex fuel, how hard would it be to get a wrecked car (I'm thinking an Impala might be about right), take out the engine and computer control goodness, and stick it in said 'Vette? My plans for the Corvette, I'm thinking a '80-'82 if I have choice, I'd totally get a '64 split window, but they be EXPENSIVE: ~Complete interior overhaul; brushed aluminum dash (retro-motorfied-Apple-esque?), sound system etc... ~New paint job; blue with silver racing stripes (like the new Shelby Cobra, reversed) ~New engine, and what ever mechanical tune-ups are required. ~I might make the sunroof removable ~Whatever else comes to mind in my owner ship of the most awesome thing on 4 wheels Thanks!!

I would like to know how difficult it would be to swap out the charging port on an S4 for the new hyper charging ports on the new Droid Turbo. I know there is not a lot of free space with in the cell for mods. And I am assuming that the hyper charger is smaller. That being said the tools for a repair swap out do not seem that difficult to master. What else would be needed to make this project successful, a power converter? Basically I want to see if its possible to take the outdated cells people would normally throw away or trade and mod them into something of desire for a cheaper price. Thank you for your time Instructable Community

I have a 2006 Mini Baja Minibike(http://www.bajamotorsports.com/categories/minibikes/products/WR65_baja-warrior-mini-bike) with more than a few problems. As of now, it won't even start, and I can't find the problem. I've cleaned anywhere that fuel goes, air filter, exhaust, and adjusted the carb, it still doesn't start. When it was running, it didn't even idle. So I'm wondering, would an engine swap with this: http://www.harborfreight.com/engines-generators/gas-engines/212-cc-ohv-horizontal-shaft-gas-engine-epa-69730.html engine work? It seems almost identical; but I"m not sure.

On Monday 8 Feb 2010, I wrote: I'm not sure that I like the swapped page layout -- with the author info, staff feature options, and so forth on the left side. Since English is read left-to-right, this means that administrative info is given "top billing", while the actual Instructable content is relegated to second place. It also means that some of that content is cut off of the viewer's display, depending on how they have chosen to size their browser window. The fact that I'bles makes assumptions about browser size and shape is, of course, wrong in the first place, but the new layout makes that wrongness even more obvious to the casual user. UPDATE: Tuesday morning, 9 Feb 2010, the administrative info is back on the right side of the page.

Is it possible to convert a button from using a rubber contact to using a microswitch? The intent I have in mind is to take the buttons on a GBA and make them more like those on the SP/DSi/3DS, but the idea could be applied to any instance of squishy rubber-contacts.My best guess of how to go about this would be to trace the positive and negative leads into the switch on the circuitboard, then to somehow break that connection and reroute them into the microswitch by soldering wires to them. I need to go double-check the leads are available on the particular board I'm working with, and I wanted to test the general theory using a cheaper board like a TV remote.Any thoughts?

I bought an Atheros wireless-N mini PCI-E card for an HP DV7 series laptop, to replace the Broadcom wireless-G card, however, when installed, I just get a bios error "unsupported network card". I removed it and restarted with the original card and it works fine. I trhen tried installing the card live, and it detected it and installed the software, but then BSOD (my first one for Windows 7 actually), so I swapped back to the original card again. I then installed the card in the secondary bay, live, and it installed the drivers successfully, but when swapped with the original card again (the wires don't reach to the other bay), it failed to boot again. How can I replace the original card?

I know BEAM robotics have fallen out of style a bit, but I hope someone is still mucking about with them because they are super cool. I am working on a Miller Solar Engine and trying to find a replacement for the 1381-J voltage trigger. I tried out the DS1817. It was recommended to me by one the technicians at Digi-Key as a replacement for the MN1381-J and on paper it looks like a good swap, but in the circuit it is just not resetting once the voltage drops. I have it breadboarded and I can stick the 1381 in it and it works perfectly. When swapped with the DS1817 it triggers once the top voltage is reached, but then never resets (it just drains forever.) I double-checked the component type to make sure it was just not a miss shipment of the wrong item, but it checks out. And I tried swapping the DS1817 component out thinking that I just had a dud (or 5) but it does not seem to help. Any thoughts? Here are the data sheets on the 2 items. http://datasheets.maximintegrated.com/en/ds/DS1817.pdf http://www.semicon.panasonic.co.jp/ds4/SAG00003CEM_discon.pdf one bit of weirdness I already figured out is that the 1381 looks like it has a different 1-2-3 pin out sequence at the top of the PDF but it turns out it does not at the bottom.
