Green Clubs

This is to spread the word about green clubs. They are a great way to get together with people and talk and do green things that help our planet. They are also a great way to raise awareness to people about our what could be destroyed earth. Great places to have them are libraries, schools, and even meeting places like local coffee shops. Please help start green clubs. P.S. I am not a Hippie or a tree-hugger.

Pictures from the Instructables BBQ!

On Thursday, Instructables celebrated the fourth day of Instructacon with a barbecue in Golden Gate Park. Some friends and fans joined the crew from HQ for some grilled specialties, lawn games, socializing, and a talking hydrogen rocket (in true Instructables style, we tested its limits and broke it very quickly). Here are some pictures from the event--be sure to join us for future events if you are in the San Francisco area!

Car remote unlock modding.

Im talking about the little button remote you have on your key chain that unlocks, locks and opens your trunk of your car. I want more information on the system. Is it hard to remove?  If i remove it is there a way to mod it so you can open and or shut and lock doors to your house? Seems a shame to let me little remote go to waste =)   thanks in advance.

Instructables Design Comp

Hi.  I would appreciate clarification regarding the entry criteria to this comp, please.  It talks about things made of wood, and being related to that recent wood care competition.  I feel sure this is just a temporary glitch. If I feel the proper details match the sort of thing I want to enter, I will jump in with both feet, but at the moment my entry would not necessarily be wood related. thanks for running such fabulous competitions

Flame Message

Hey everyone, this is my first post and i was wondering how i would spell out a message on the ground in flames for a special occasion. I saw this sort of thing in the movie Daredevil, i think... where the police officer threw a lit cigarette on the ground and it ignited "DAREDEVIL" in flames on the ground... i noticed it burned for a while as i was watching the movie, and i talked with some other people about it and they suggested it could be some sort of gel... any ideas?

Home Telephone Hack needed for Hard of Hearing

Hi there, My uncle has a fierce case of tinnitus, and sometimes he can't hear the telephone ringing. He can talk on the phone alright, the ringing just messes with the perceptions of sounds usually associated with home phones ringing. So, he has a few phones hooked up around the house so he can try and hear the phone when it rings. its just a bunch of barely-functioning rotaries. Have you ever seen that scene in bicentenial man where the clockmaker and his wife are talking in the kitchen when the hour comes and all the clocks start chiming. A cacophony of alarm. That is kind of like how it is at my uncle's when somone calls. I would like to set up a visual alarm system for when somone calls. So, he has a few fairly loud rotary phones laying around. I'm sure he wouldn't mind if I took one apart along with one of his lamps. I just need to know where to screw, unscrew, solder, and smile. Thanks!!

Interview with IKEA on Sustainability

I knew about IKEA's cutting of costs with flat packing, but it's cool to hear them talk about dealing with several different issues of sustainability. ideas: - save on resources, save on environment - looking to use more renewable energy, even producing solar and wind energy themselves. Goal of 60% renewable by 2009 - thinking of biofuel transport - trying to get more local suppliershttp://www.grist.org/news/maindish/2007/02/27/ikea/index.html?source=biz

I read today that Amazon is now offering 3d printed models of videogame characters that the customer can customize. Its only certain game characters and I'm an older fella so I don't know what games they're talking about. Still, I'm glad to see 3d printing taking another step toward the mainstream.

Instructables for sale (updated).

After a number of requests, I am now selling two of my recent instructables on my Etsy shop: Both my Serenity Suncatcher and The Mule are now available as "flat-packs", packed along with illustrated assembly instructions. UPDATE - I have also added model X-Wings and TIE Fighters to the store! Since we're talking "Etsy", are there any of my other laser-cut projects that you'd like to see available?

Tesla Coil Workshop

Instructables member Phenoptix put me onto a fun event this weekend - two chaps from the Extreme Electronics (Derek and Dave) website led an informal workshop on how to build a classic Tesla coil, from power supply through to topload and breakout. They also brought along a few of their toys to demonstrate what they were talking about, and I grabbed a few (shaky) videos. Thanks to Derek & Dave, it was a grand night, and thanks to the "Lone Scout" for the supply of coffee.

The Validity of Astrology

So today in one of my classes we talked about the practice of astrology and how it supposably affects us. My teacher didn't tell us to go and relie on horoscopes on how to live our days. I was just wanting to hear some other opinions on it. Personally i'm still sort of reluctant to accept it, not sure why but... Just ya know post your opinions on whether you think this really old practice is BS or is worth taking a look at.

A place where one can use machines and tools (milling, welding etc.) ?

Hello, A few months ago, I read about places where one can pay a membership to use tools and get some room to build projects, but can't remember the name or find it again. (It's something like Laoish talked about in the topic "Public Workshop who would be interested?") Does anybody knows about it ? Thanks! Cuvette

What did you GIVE ?

There are a couple threads on "what did you get?" Here's one to talk about any gifts you managed to come up with that were particularly clever, cool, or well-received. I suppose the one I put the most effort into was the "day-runner planner" re-purposed into a sewing measurement and craft data book for my wife. I threw away the traditional calendar pages and added some downloaded and self-made special purpose pages...

A convention, festival, fair, thing. Please read.

Hello, I've never put anything on the forums before, but I really want to get my idea out there if I can't make it.   I have this idea for something like a convention, fair, etc.  However it will be full of classes, and talking areas, I want it to be cheap and for all ages and backgrounds.   Each booth will be a class, they'll be able to talk/teach about anything: physics, folklore, robotics, animation, painting, dog training, baking, history, biology, ghosts, philosophy, anything!  You can go to these classes and take notes, if you find out you hate the subject or teacher you can leave to go to another class.  In the talking areas you can trade notes, share your own ideas, or just chill out.  I want most of the classes to be free (If a teacher charges money then they need to be the ones to keep people out) but they can charge for materials,(like a CD with references, or a program they use, or a book) or products,(like a cake they just baked, or a drawing they drew) or you can give them donations, and they can give you a business card if they have classes outside of the place.  You may have to organize the booths by loudness, or maturity (with the teachers being able to teach anything, some classes might be bad for kids to see.)  I don't know what this event would be called, it's not quite a convention, or festival, or school, It could happen indoors or out.  This is my main issue; I don't know if I would need permits for it, or what else I should get for it (also I'm broke).  I've been researching for a few weeks now, and I have a few ideas, but incase I fail then maybe someone on here can do it.  Thank you for reading.

High School Football

This just happened at my school, I thought you guys in this group would like it: This week on the announcements, our sports director told us about the new rules for football games. None of them were too bad, except for not being allowed to take off our shirts (sports bras for girls) any more, in order to paint our chests. We were all pissed, and determined to do something about it, so this night at the game, the entire spirit section (huge) just sat their quietly and didn't cheer at all. By half-time, we were down 9-0 and the cheerleaders were pissed that we wouldn't even stand up. The principal called down the kid in charge and they talked for a bit. When he came back up, he told us that she had agreed to not wearing shirts on the homecoming game, as long as we didn't use the "Bullshit" chant. A few minutes later, someone else went down and talked to her, they convinced her to withdraw the policy starting next week, if we would start to cheer this game. In the end, it was a great success, and we won the football game, too!

Just wondering about what you actually get in a Pro Membership.

I was doing some poking around the site and found this page: https://www.instructables.com/account/give it talks about a few things that I haven't heard of or noticed since being pro for a while. These include: WYSIWYG Rich Text Editor? I did not notice the editor change at all when upgrading to a pro membership. Is this talking about being able to access and edit the HTML of an instructable? Author Intro - I am guessing this is different than the author bio, so I am not sure... Private Instructables - I have never seen an option to make an instructable private. --- After typing the above out, I logged out of my account and went to the signup page here: https://www.instructables.com/account/gopro and it seems the author intro and the WYSIWYG rich text editor seems to have disappeared however the private instructables feature is still there. If it has any meaning, I didn't pay for pro, I am using one my free 1 year pro memberships for getting a hompage feature.

Beginner Electronics Information?

I'm interested in taking on a few of the projects in the electronics category, particularly the high voltage compilation. Obviously though, this is some pretty dangerous and complicated stuff (maybe just to me), so anyway, I was wondering if there were any books,  web pages or guides with basic starting out info that might help me understand what those guides are talking about? You probably should assume I know nothing about electronics, because its more or less true.

America's Got Talent Judging Table Replica

Hi, I'm new here to Instructables. I'm wondering how you would go about creating a judging table similar to that of America's Got Talent, with X's at the front, and buttons that make a loud buzz noise (similar to the show itself), and makes the X's go red. Does anyone have any idea how to solve this problem? I'm using arduino (http://www.arduino.cc/) for the rest of the project so I'm able to use the arduino to measure dc voltage but how do I transfer the sound wave into a measurable dc voltage? thx in advance / david
