Making a Telephone Function Without a Phone Line?

I have an old telephone desk set with a DTMF keypad. I was wondering if there was a way to some how get it to function without hooking it up to a telephone line, not to call people, but to make the DTMF tones, make it ring, and maybe be able to talk into the receiver. If you want to know why I would want to do this I'll just say I'm a musician, and I'd like to be able to run the phone into my mixer and use it like as an instrument. Also, yes I've seen the instructable about how to make a telephone receiver microphone, so no need to show me.

Here is an idea involving a Bleutooth Headset

Hi, I was wondering if anyone ever had the idea to build in a headset in an old telephone (something with wood) so you can use it for your phone. I'm planning to do this this year. What are your thoughts? Dries

Cordless Telephone Bridge

I'm trying to figure out how (or if) I can use an old cordless phone as a tranciever, wiring in an rj11 jack to the phone's reciever to essentially make a cordless phone "bridge" so that I can use my desk phone in an area without phone cabling by plugging it into the cordless phone's reciever. I've tried the phone over power adapters and haven't had great luck with 'em, so I'm trying to think outside the box. Anyone have a suggestion or two?

Home Telephone Hack needed for Hard of Hearing

Hi there, My uncle has a fierce case of tinnitus, and sometimes he can't hear the telephone ringing. He can talk on the phone alright, the ringing just messes with the perceptions of sounds usually associated with home phones ringing. So, he has a few phones hooked up around the house so he can try and hear the phone when it rings. its just a bunch of barely-functioning rotaries. Have you ever seen that scene in bicentenial man where the clockmaker and his wife are talking in the kitchen when the hour comes and all the clocks start chiming. A cacophony of alarm. That is kind of like how it is at my uncle's when somone calls. I would like to set up a visual alarm system for when somone calls. So, he has a few fairly loud rotary phones laying around. I'm sure he wouldn't mind if I took one apart along with one of his lamps. I just need to know where to screw, unscrew, solder, and smile. Thanks!!

blutooth telephone

Hi people who are smarter than me! I have been searching the great Google for the past while and I cannot find something that does this. I love the portability of cellphones and i love the look an feel of landlines (you cannot beat the look of a phone on a a desk. What I want is a device that connects to my cellular telephone wirelessly and that a landline can plug into. This means that it must supply about 40 - 60 VDC to power an old phone that DOES NOT HAVE EXTERNAL POWER SUPPLY so it could operate a touch tone phone from the 80's and 90's. When I get a call on my phone I want it to ring the phone. When I pick up the handset I want it to answer the call and allow me to talk to the person. When I place a call I want to be able to pick up the handset and then dial a 10 digit number and then it place the call through my cell phone. During the call I want to be able to press a number on the landline and for it to press that number on my phones keypad. when i put the handset down i want it to hang up. Is this even possible? can it be done? let me know! Thanks! scott

Mail Fraud

So we canceled AT&T; service a few months ago, and we have been getting a bill from them every month since. Each month, we call, they apologize and tell us to ignore the bill. Today, the lady transferred us to another department which happened to be closed, ending the call. I know this is considered mail fraud...using the US Postal Service to unlawfully attempt to obtain money. Does anybody know of any resources for helping to write a letter to them that would explain that what they are doing is illegal, and threaten legal action if they don't stop immediately. So any templates for cease and desist letters would be great. Thanks!

Sharing a home telephone line through the internet?

Hi geeks :) I have this thing in my mind that I want to put into practice. I don't know where to start. I searched couple of things in google but didn't get any answers to help me to start my project. I was thinking to use my uncle's second home telephone line which is not in use at the moment. The thing is that I live 10km away from his house and he has this thing that he is able to talk limitless to foreign countries :) So I'm wondering: is there anyway to connect or to reach my uncle's second line through internet? I thought maybe I can use the second telephone line by setting up the right equipment like creating two servers one at my uncle's house and one at my house. Any ideas are appreciated!

Help with a momentary contact switch

Hi everyone. I'm currently working on a new Instructable, and I've hit a small wall. What I'm looking for is a momentary contact switch that closes for a second, then opens again on its own independently of the actuator -- and I can't quite figure out how to do it. To clarify, here's the operation: You lift the receiver (or handset, or whatever you like to call it) on an old telephone, and the buttons -- normally held down by the receiver -- lift up to create the contact so the telephone knows you've answered and the call connects. Well, this phone isn't going to be connected to the telephone network any more, but what I want is for a contact to be closed momentarily when you lift the receiver, and then opens again automatically on its own even if you haven't put the receiver back down. I also want the same contact to be made when you eventually do put the receiver back down -- so you replace the receiver, a contact is made momentarily, and then opens again on its own, even though the receiver buttons remain down. I hope that makes sense, and that someone has a bit of advice on how to achieve this. Thanks in advance! EDIT: Been continuing my research, and found the following: http://www.simprojects.nl/toggle_to_momentary.htm Can anyone confirm if this will achieve what I'm looking for? Thanks again.

I need help creating a telephone network!

Hey! I was wondering if there's any clever people out there who can help me with my ambitious project. I'm doing some creative direction for an event and aim to create a telephone network within the venue. I want to put phones on tables and use the table numbers as the phone numbers... I also would like a way of recording everything thats said over the course of the night through the telephones? I have a very basic understanding of how these things work, I've made circuits before- but i am an artist, not an electrician so please be kind and explain to me like you would a child! I've got my hands on a load of old phones, so I just need to rewire them I guess?  Thanks!

use a landline telephone, speakers, a mic, and a computer to go online with dial-up

Would it be possible to use a landline telephone, a computer with speakers and a microphone, and a software program to connect to the internet with dial-up? there are multiple free dial-up numbers available, so if I called with the phone, and used the computer to emulate an analog modem and listen to the response with the microphone, would I be able to get online? if so, does anything like this already exist?

Using Sound from Phonecalls as Trigger for Computer Game

Hello people Can anyone help me with an idea please? I am wondering if it would be possible to use live audio from phone calls to trigger actions in a basic computer game. I know that I can use sound input to trigger actions in Flash for example, but I do not know how to route audio from a phone call into the computer in the first place. Does this sound doable? If so, how could I achieve this? Thanks in advance... Daniel

Cubicle Voice Silencer/Muffler

Hi I work in a cubicle environment with no white noise so a mouse fart can be heard across 8 cubicles in either direction. I've already been pulled in by my manager because of complaints about my voice when I'm on the phone. Can anyone come up with some device that can be placed over mouth and phone to muffle the voice? I thought of a sponge foam half sphere but I haven't tried or tested it. I'd need to find one as well! Thanks... and my co-workers will thank you as well!

big telephone receiver for cell phone

Friends, I hate talking on the cell phone; it's too small, especially when I'm talking from home. I keep a land line so I can chat for hours on a regular sized telephone. However, I'm moving next week and won't be able to spring for a land line. Can anyone help me use an old-time big phone receiver with a cell phone? Blue tooth maybe? Or perhaps attach something to/around the cell phone that allows me to hold it between my head and shoulder and talk into a mouthpiece that's near my mouth? Thank you, evil geniuses, all... xo

Help please! Repairing trip-up!

Please Help!!! I need help to fix my telephone's mic! I have a telephone at home that was dropped many times and ultimately finished breaking something (e.i. the microphone) so while me being an aspirating electronic engineer (NOOB!) I tried to open up the phone and change the mic with a solution that I thought pretty smart; I learn some time ago that if you change the polarity of a speaker, you can use it as a mic so I naturally opened up the phone and to my surprise I find 2 freaking mics that look nothing like a speaker (or even a freaking mic for that matter) (Picture below). So I was asking myself... Can someone help me to change the mics in the phone with the speaker (Picture of the speaker below, any of the speakers are ok), by telling me about any changes that I have to do or any alert that this might not work (keep in to consideration the voltage, speaker type, and the polarity)... P.S. â€‹II was also thinking about changing the antenna because it's pretty weak!(Pics below). Any thoughts about that? And Thank You! Sincerely; Your hopefully future friend and companion: AntF

Telephone answering machine

I am looking for a machine that will allow people to call a telephone   number that would be automatically answered and relayed to a   louspeaker so that the call can be heard "out loud". This planned as   an analogue system but I am open to everything. The calls should be   limited to 3 minutes. alternative:   an app that would allow me to answer my calls   automatically (hands-off) and listen to the callers without touching   the phone. The calls should be limited to 3 minutes. This is project that is happening in mid-August 2013 in Palm Springs Ca. Usually in Europe I use a  Tiptel 540 SD  but these dont seem   available in the US. "Call Me Maybe": The Joseph Ducreux Translation

We all love Joseph Ducreux. The below meme (sorry you have to scroll all the way to the bottom to see it) gave me the idea for this forum. I decided Decreuxize the entire "Call Me Maybe" song! You can find the original lyrics here. Below is the parody. Engage in a Conversation with Me ~ Possibly I deposited a wish in the cylindrical reservoir. Do not inquire of me as to of what my fancy consisted, As I will forever withhold from you this piece of information. I turned my eyes upon your person as my wish descended, pulled by gravity, And currently, you are blocking my desired path. I would barter my soul in exchange for the gain of one of the cravings of my heart, And low-value coins in exchange for an osculation. I did not seek out this situation, However, currently, you are blocking my desired path. Your gaze was unwavering, Torn breeches, Epidermis was exposed, The night exhibited an unusually high temperature, And there were active air currents. To where are you intending upon traveling, my babe? Greetings. I just engaged in a first conversation with you, And this is insane. However, here is the group of numerals associated with my telephonic device. You could engage in a conversation with me using the device -- possibly. I find it difficult to hold my eyes Upon your visage, my babe, However, here is the group of numerals associated with my telephonic device. You could engage in a conversation with me using the device -- possibly. Greetings. I just engaged in a first conversation with you, And this is insane. However, here is the group of numerals associated with my telephonic device. You could engage in a conversation with me using the device -- possibly. And the entirety of the other young males Endeavor to pursue me. However, here is the group of numerals associated with my telephonic device. You could engage in a conversation with me using the device -- possibly. You were lax about contacting me, But I needed no such amount of time in order to fall. I gained absolutely nothing from you, However, you are continuing to block my desired path. I beseech, take on return, and purloin. I have the gift of legitimate precognition. I was, however, unaware that I would feel it. Despite this fact, it is blocking my desired path. Your gaze was unwavering, Torn breeches, Epidermis was exposed, The night exhibited an unusually high temperature, And there were active air currents. Network connected telephone answering machine

I was hoping that SOMEONE made a telephone answering machine with a network connection so that it would do its thing like any other digital answering machine but the messages could be managed over my network. So I did a google search and it seems others have also been interested in such a thing - albeit the most recent queries being at least a year old. The answers were - "I already have that on Vonage" - sorry - don't want voip!! And various programs that would let your computer, with voice modem, do that including linux programs. Well - I don't have a full blown computer on all the time and am not likely to. And so I thought - how about a small computer - but don't have one - couldn't think of one ... And then I thought ..... Raspberry PI!!?? So small and low power that it could even be put in an old answering machine case and low power draw. Does anyone think its enough computer to do this?  Anyone up to inventing one?

Anyone here have hyperterminal knowledge?

I was hoping someone here would possibly know about using hyperterminal in windows. The situation is: 1. I am able to connect a laptop and a desktop computer via dialup modems through a 100 foot telephone wire, and transfer files using window's xp's hyperterminal program. 2. I want to somehow bridge the ethernet connection on the desktop computer to the dialup modem, to enable me to have internet access on the laptop via internet explorer/whatever. 3. If I can connect two computers via their modems with a frickin telephone cord and send files, then I know it is possible to bridge the ethernet connection into the modem like one would bridge a wireless connection to the ethernet port of a windows xp machine so they can connect a pc to the ethernet port and use internet traffic for it. 4. I know it's simply a matter of implementing it. Anyone have any ideas?

Rotary dial phone

Hi all, Yesterday, my grandma gave me an old telephone. My mother used it as a toy, so my grandfather disconnected the wires (for safety). Phone Headset

I would swear I saw an Instructable on this somewhere, but now I can't find it. I have an old corded telephone that I want to rewire. I just want to take the actual handheld part and attach it to a standard 2.5mm stereo output, such that I could either plug it into a cell phone and have a giant cool headset, or use it with my speaker/mic splitter to do VoIP-type work on the computer. Do phone cords have standard colored wires? Am I just going to have to figure it out myself? The headset has a standard 4-contact CAT-1 phone jack, and I want to take one end off a phone cord and replace it with a 2.5mm plug.

I want to be able to fall asleep to the sound of the waterfall ~75' away

I want to be able to set up a wireless microphone that will be able to withstand the elements in a northern Maine climate (wind, snow, freezing rain etc) that will capture the sound of a waterfall close to our cottage and transmit the sound with fairly good fidelity to a bedside receiver.  Something that won't eat batteries, or maybe even solar powered (if simple enough) I'm no electronics whiz (clearly) but surely this is do-able?  The power lines come in from the other side of the cottage, so are more than 100' away.  Nearest neighbours are more than a half-mile so the only possible interference I could see would be from our own cordless telephones.  Any takers?

Using a Rhino FXS Analog Chanel bank to actuate a relay

Ok so i've got a VOIP system that's connected to a Rhino FXS Chanel bank  that's used to control our overhead paging system. From the Rhino we go to a Volcom analog adapter to a Volcom Stacker unit (echo cancelation). Every once in a while this system will "lock up" and just throw static over the paging system (and even more rarely someone will put the overhead paging system on hold which pumps our hold music over the intercom system)...to combat this i've got the Rhino, the adapter, and the stacker pluged into a surge protector so that when the "abnormal condition occurs" we just flip the switch on the surge protector and it drops the whole system. then we turn it back on and all is well. This works great but the system is in a remote location in the facility so it takes a bit of walking to get to it. What i'd like to do is try to hook up a NC relay between the surge protector and the wall and have an open channel on the Rhino actuate the relay to basically turn the power off to the system any time you dial a specific extension.According to the datasheet the Rhino itself has a line current limit from 18ma to 45ma and it emits standard telephone line voltage....i can also configure the ring cadence...so i can probably set the ring duration long enough to actuate the relay before it cuts the system off (which would then return the relay back to closed)i'm having trouble finding out what the actual output voltage on the analog line and a general lack of schematics to try to make this workso...if anyone wants to have a little fun attempting to design a relay that can be actuated by a telephone...please reply

Fbi sleeve microphone frankensteined in walkie talkie

Drumroll please...it's the world's (or at least instructable's) longest forum post! :D I want to solder a microphone (I ripped it out of an old telephone headset) to a walkie talkie's board in such a way that I can talk into that and have the walkie talkie pick up that instead of the input from the preexisting mike...I figured I would have to use the same old push to talk button, but I would sure like to be able to press a button near the mike to talk. I want to thread the mike up my arm, like a secret agent! The Where would I solder the microphone wires? Do I have to worry about burning/shortcircuiting my microphone or the walkie talkie? Is there any way to attach a talk button so it runs down my arm as well? Thanks!

Dial-up internet server

Hi everyone, I am trying to connect my Sega Dreamcast to the internet with it's 56k modem, without using telephone lines. From what I understand, I need to connect my my Dreamcast to a tone generator, then to a USB modem plugged into a laptop with which to forward the connection over wifi. My question is: Is this is a plausible solution, and if so, could I simplify and shrink this set up. Ideally I would like to figure out if I could build a tone generator instead of buying one and how can I replace the laptop with something like a raspberry pi. I think that once I figured out how to forward the connection on my laptop, it would be fairly straightforward to do the same with a raspberry pi. I would prefer a relatively compact solution if possible. Thanks in advance for any help or thoughts.

Enter comment on the part of the computers and dial up telephone network you would like to help build. This computer should not have microsoft or icons that slow down computers and make them annoying. The rom should enable the computer to turn on instantly. There should be about 5 rom chips including , video rom, a sound rom , a disk drive rom , a basic rom . The keyboard should include graphics keys of some choice. The right side of the keyboard has to be different. Since this might be a high volume computer the memory might be less than annoying microsoft. Mandatory commercial viewing might be a possibility. The dial up network might have less complex programs. Everyone should be able to write a program and type save. The problem here might be an excessive demand for 3.5 inch disks and cd disks.

Dr. Who question

Ok, I have had a LOT of difficulties getting to see each episode, but I did finally have the opportunity over the weekend to see the one season end "The End of Time"  episodes. I followed most of it, but towards the end, before he regenerated, he went about "doing things",  speaking to one person, giving a name to Jack,  etc.   Some of them I understood (like the gift to Donna), but many of the others I am baffled by (like the name given to Jack,  and the words spoken to Rose Tyler)....have no reference point for me, can anyone help me out...I probably will never get to see the episodes involving the references and if I do, I will probably have forgotten this conversation by then. A man walks into an electronics store and asks to see their Fax machines.  The salesperson shows him a telephone/copier/fax combo, but he replies:  "I want the Fax Ma'am,   Just the fax.....

Oregon Lawmaker Proposes Registration Fee for Bicyclists

A conversation with Rep. Krieger about his bike registration billRepresentative Wayne Krieger (R-Gold Beach) wants everyone who owns a bicycle in the state of Oregon to pay a mandatory, $54 registration fee (and then renew it for another $54 every two years). He is the chief architect of House Bill 3008, a proposal that was met with a lot of negative responses on this site when I reported on it today.I spoke to Krieger via telephone from his Salem office on Friday morning to learn more about his reasons for proposing this bill.Krieger's main motivation seems to be one of equity. When I asked for his main impetus behind the proposal, he brought up the Vulnerable Roadway Users law that passed last session. That bill created a new class of road user, and stiffened penalties for anyone involved in a crash that seriously injured a vulnerable roadway user (includes people on foot, on bikes, on animals, skateboards, etc...).via Freakonomics.

Cell Phone Clone?

I've always thought that it would be cool to have more than one cell device on my specific account.   (no, not like a family sharing plan).   Let's say, I want to keep a spare phone in my glove box, on a trickle charger, so that I always have a working phone in an emergency.    Let's say you use your cell phone a lot..  Instead of swapping out exhausted batteries, what if you had a second phone on the charger that you can switch to whenever needed. Is it possible to clone your telephone, so that you can have a spare device.      If you are paying for the service, and you can only use one of the phones at a specific time, why would the phone company care?   I have 6 old phones from which I upgraded.  They all work fine, and could make great spares if there was a way of programming them to work on my account.   Can the MAC address / serial number be cloned to an old phone? J.

Landline and mini speaker & microphone : can one use bluetooth mini speakers ?

Hello,Is it possible to use one of those small bluetooth speaker + microphone sold everywhere with a corded phone (cordless but wired to rj11 modem-routeur) to achieve some kind of JABRA-like system ?This is intended for me (light hearing impairement) and my parents.Of course the Bluetooth would not be used as bluetooth but as a "wired" speaker+mic to the phone base (with 3.5mm audio cable as for headset used by gamers..The idea is to get a louder volume than the handset or base of a corded phone can provide.and the problem of sound quality + cuts that arise from this mode of use (listener cans speak but with a delay ...) Please, don't answer me to buy "Jabra" or buy "amplified" dect phone.Just in case, I dream of a mini speaker not bigger than a glass o water connected with a lapel microphone (or replacing the microphone + speaker of my GIGASET handset ...)Any answer and/or suggestion would be appreciated.
