Do-it-yourself thermal paper

Hello,I am thinking about buying a small mobile printer, but the smallest (500g/1lbs, €50) available is using thermal paper.While I could find the paper rather cheap in the US (from about 6 cent/sheet) here I could not find anything similar.I did stumble across http://www.atarimagazines.com/v6n2/Inventions.html (" ... homemade thermal paper has a darker printout than any thermal paper you could buy. ... Thermal epoxy or Thermal grease and bolts?

I am mounting 15 Cree LEDs to get an old overhead projector to work as a video projector. the only thing I am wondering is whether thermal epoxy is better to use than thermal grease with bolts and nuts attached to a heatsink. Do both have the same heat dissipation? What I am trying to do is still use the LEDs for use with other projects in case i need them for something else.

I am just starting out I have built several Bio stoves in the past few years .  The cost of fuel wood,wood chip, saw dust ,grass leaves , brush paper all house hole wastes but plastic bone and metal . are the fuel's it will cook . In the end you are left with Bio dust charcoal and it is a 100% natural soil additive that improves plant growth . No green house gasses . and just a little ash from the fire retaining feeder. Any way I need to control at lease 4 to 5 temperature . all are inter related . all temp. feed backs will control digital speed controls to maintain temp.

Mk7 extruder help

Instead of buying the extruder I plan on making it instead using various parts I have already however I do not have the thermal core. I am capable of milling and if not I know someone with a CNC what I don't have that I need are the "EXACT" dimensions of the thermal core can anyone give them to me?

Lighting with RGB LEDs

Hi all. I am wanting to get into using led lighting for long exposure photos (for the purpose of thermal imaging) and I am looking at RGB LEDs for providing the colour. My question being, should I try finding LEDs that have similar light output in mcd or stick with RGB LEDs? The reason I am asking is when I am looking at specs, the green seems to be 2 to 4 times as bright. Is this an issue?  Also, the RGB LEDs seem to have a much wider viewing/ lighting angle.  I am not sure where to go from here. Copper tape for thermal concentration

Has anyone ever used copper tape to concentrate heat on an object to obtain a uniform higher temperature?   I've been doing some studies in the recent past that suggest polished copper foil is a good reflector of infrared energy. It is not as good as silver, but I don't think it would go over well to use silver in any sort of oven or kiln.  I used to think good ole aluminum foil was good for heat, but it turns out it is only good for stopping heat.  I've thought of using the instructable on the waffle iron or make one by way of a bread toaster, but will most likely not be able to go through with it.  The copper foil is the same type found at stained glass craft shops.

flat plate evacuated solar panel

Hello, I am trying to figure how to make an evacuated flat plate solar thermal panel ( sort of this one: www.genersys-solar.com/downloads.asp ). Main problem so far is how to keep air out (vacuum) . What sort of o-ring should I use ? Would it be possible to use Arduino to control internal vacuum and act a vacuum pump to keep it balanced in time ?

USB heated Gloves mod Qs

I recently received a pair of USB powered heated gloves. Unfortunately they have a big bulky switch that hangs too closely to your hands and dangles around when you type. I'm looking to mod the gloves to have a less clunky switch, something more streamlined. The gloves have three setting, High (II), Off (O), and Low (I). There's a pic of what the inside looks like. I'm trying to figure out how the circuit works. I would assume it was just one setting is full power and the other has the resistor in it, but the resistor appears to be soldered to two leads on the switch. Does the wiring of it mean it skips the resistor when it's in the high position? Also what type of resistor is that (the big grey type) can it be substituted for a smaller one of equal value? It's not that important, I'm just curious, because I think I'm actually going to make the mod only have the High setting and probably without the switch since I could just unplug them instead of adding in a switch.I think the heating elements might be wired in series because the top pad doesn't get as hot at the bottom (or maybe they're just different temperature pads?).And I'd like to add a battery pack option. What would be the ideal (smallest) batttery setup I could use? (5 volts right?) Would a 9v battery overwork the thermal pads or just make them hotter?I was also thinking of changing the connecttion to a connector like this (LINK) a might be a little smaller, thoughts? Also what wires on the USB are pos and neg?

Thermal Paste

Hello, I was wondering, if you had tubs of high temperature thermal compound, would putting it on your stove-top (flat topped stoves, not the ones with the coils) before you cooked let your stove be more efficient? Other than the fact that I don't know where you would get high temperature thermal paste that could withstand your stop-top and the fact that it would probably ruin your pots, pans, and stove, is it possible? I wonder because I just saw my tubs of thermal paste sitting there and then went inside to cook something.

"New " old material for experimentation.

This video is about Nitinol memory metal engines that are basically Stirling heat engines and work on a very low temperature difference. I first say this material while watching a video on the founder of 'The Venus Project'. He had small spring that he would stretch out of shape and the heat it - it would come back to its original form and shape. I thought it was neat but didn't see the potential of the material. I have a blown thermal fuse in one of my fog machines,it is 10 amp 250 volt 133 degrees c.can i by pass it safely?(there is high temp limit switch on heating element)or can anyone tell me where i can get one or its equivalent?i found some online but they in thailand.hoping someone who knows more than me can tell me where to get this locally.the blown fuse has some numbers on it :se fuse sf129 e tf 133 degrees c please help

Thermal Cooling and Heating

It is very possible and it is in use today by using Thermal Cooling and Heating from the earth. Performed by using a 6" well at least 100' deep, with thermal tubing inserted into the well carrying the liquid to be cooled/heated. Process is done by a circulating pump in the interior unit - through the coil - sending back through the well system and returning. It starts out from the main unit circ pump.......through the coils.......out to the "down tube" into the 6" well pipe, a sharp 180* turn back up the system returning to the circ pump. Such a system is used by many facilities to Air Condition or heat rooms of about 15' x 15' or so. I have even seen a system that utilized creek water as the "cooler" of the tubing on a circ pump system. That one really was cool, about 52 degrees. Have you heard of these systems or seen something like it or close?

Thermal Flashlight scaling help

Hello all, I'm dont have much basic knowledge about electronics and I got a problem. I've built this exact Instructable: https://www.instructables.com/id/Build-a-Thermal-Flashlight-Light-Painting-with-T/?ALLSTEPS I want to drive a 1m RGB LED strip with it so I've changed the NPN transistors to stronger ones that handle 0.5 A, it's the only components that are different. These are the exact NPN transistors: https://www.elfa.se/elfa3~eu_en/elfa/init.do?item=71-014-58&toc;=0&q;=BC337-25 Problem: the circuit works fine with ONE RGB LED but it does not work with even the smallest bit of RGB-strip (3 emitters). Goal is to drive a 1m strip and that consumes 14.4W @ 12V. Im using 12V 1A adapter for the Arduino and another 12V 2.5A for the LED-strip. What am I not understanding?

Hidden dangers of receips and dockets printed on thermal paper

Ever wondered how these thermal papers for your fax machine or supermarket docket work? Nothing that is printed by fast machines for you these days uses ink when it comes to cheaply producing a parking docket for example. If you played around with these papers you already know they turn black when you apply heat. A soldering iron at low heat makes a nice pencil on them... But what if you pet or kid loves to play with these papers? Often they like do just jast with the receipt for your fast food if found inside the bag ;) Most people would not consider a piece of paper as a health risk, but for thermal paper this can often be a different story. A lot of these papers still use bisphenol in one form or the other to develop the ink from crystal clear to black. Feel free to read up on it on Wikipedia - I recommend it! They also have more info on the thermal paper itself, including alternatives to bisphenol. Although recent studies are in favour of the thermal paper, when handled correctly some also show an increased risk for those dealing with a lot of paper - like the people working at cash registers in a really busy shop. Bisphenol can get into the body through the skin and by ingestion - for example when your kid tries to chew on it. As noone really knows where the paper you got came from it is a guessing game to figure out if it is free of harmful chemicals... So the best option is to avoid exposure when possible. If you know your kids or pets might to try eating some paper then make sure you don't leave any thermal paper around where they could reach it. But there is good news too as more and more countries try to set standards for thermal paper in regards to harmful chemical levels and protective coatings. Cheap paper for almost any priter out there can always be ordered from asia to avoid higher costs of local and safe paper though...

Using body heat as a power source

You've heard of geo-thermal energy, but what about homeo-thermal energy? I know I sure haven't, mostly because I just made up that word :) Bad portmanteaus aside, what do you guys think of this concept? Running or charging things using the body heat you generate throughout the day and especially during the night. I'm not sure how plausible it actually is, or how efficient it is, but I thought it'd be a nice project to start working on and wanted to know what you guys think of it. Is it worth-while? Too complicated? Not scientific enough? I'm interested in your feedback! :)

Rapid Cooling Freezer

Hi there,  I have a bit of an ambitious project at hand and would like some advice/ideas.  I have a commercial grade freezer that we are converting into an environment chamber that would be used to perform a rapid thermal test.  This rapid thermal test involves going from +65C to -10C in 2 minutes.  As it stands right now the freezer is not capable of achieving this rapid temperature change.  Thus I am looking for ideas/suggestions of how to retrofit this freezer to be able to achieve this feat.  The dimensions of the freezer are 27"x58"x46".  And this freezer would be used to stress test electronic devices that are enclosed in a plastic housing.  I have attached the spec sheet for the freezer that we are using.

Inkless printer- Laser or Heat to engrave Paper

Hello,I am currently searching for projects that print on paper using heat, lasers or other inkless technology. The problem I ran into is that a search for burn, laser and thermal in combination with printer and paper allways brings many results that are irrelevant (laser printers, thermal transfer printers and such).What I did find is http://www.flickr.com/photos/jabella/438212343/in/set-72157600033633262/ for example. Though commercial laser solutions seem a bit "too much" and overpriced to plot a bit on paper.Does anyone here have any links to projects that use heat or other methods to print on paper?I guess it could be as simple as a plotter using a weak soldering iron ;-)

conductive paint

Do any of you have experience with conductive paint? does it have much resistance?  i'm thinkin of heating car windsheild in much the same way that the rear window is done.  i've cracked 1 or windsheilds while defrosting. seems thermal shock from heat vents on dash are too much. just got a new windsheild.  don't want to break it.

What kind of material to use?

Okay I've procrastinated long enough to do something with my ibook's heatsink. As some may or may not know, ibooks come with thermal pads, which I unwittedly removed the old one off mine, thinking it could be replaced with good old generic thermal paste..which technically would be better for it.Unfortunatly folks the heatsink wasn't designed to clamp down onto the cpu like a normal heatsink should do, as it has to cover several different gpu/memory chips of different sizes, making a small gap between the heatsink and cpu.I've heard of people using a square or even round piece of steel or copper or something to wedge in with some thermal paste. Well, all I can think of off hand to use that might work is some sheet metal that has some white paint or something coated on one side, and a round steel (?) rod out of an old printer that's been sitting around. I presume the latter would probably be better.Can someone suggest what would be best? Should I try cutting it with a hack saw or try getting someone's bandsaw so I can get a better cut? Right now my ibook is reporting a cpu temp of 53 of Celcious, which really, compared to when it's turned on from a cold start, is really F***** slow and very laggy, it often hangs for minutes at a time. It's horrible to use sometimes, but at the same time it owes me absolutely nothing so I won't cry if it burns out.

Rubber "sand" What to do with it?

They market the stuff for installing around playground equipment. It's shredded tires. I got a load free. I plan to use some for backfill in a spot which was very rough to dig out. But I'll have leftovers. Can I vulcanize it into solid rubber? How?  Mix with concrete to make it lightweight? Or will thermal changes cause rubber to expand /contract too much?   What else could be done w/ it?

I have my computer, and an old computer.

I have my old server with a Pentium 4 Hyper threading 3.06ghz with a burnt out motherboard. Also, my current computer that works Perfect with a Celeron D 2.80ghz. They have the same 478 slots, but I'm not sure if it is a plug and play deal, i have the thermal compound stuff. Should i do it?

Have we see the event horizon of the Galactic black hole?

A preprint submitted to the Astrophysical Journal (Ap.J.) last week makes a compelling case for conclusive observational evidence for an event horizon at the compact object Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*) at the center of the Milky Way galaxy. Recent observations with mm radio waves have determined Sgr A*'s mass , distance and diameter (Nature 455, p.78), which make it "very likely" to be a black hole, unless there is some sort of exotic physics leading to a compact, but still extended and visible, object at that location.This new paper uses very general arguments from energy conservation and radiative efficiency to demonstrate that it is "impossible" for the object at Sgr A* to have a visible surface onto which accreting material collects and radiates. While the authors go through calculations in standard General Relativity for demonstration, their results hold much more broadly than that, covering any gravity theory which includes stationary solutions (i.e., horizons).If there is an object with a real surface at Sgr A*, then all the material falling in must either give up it's full potential energy into radiation as it is falling, or we should see a separate, thermal spectrum from the surface of the object itself. The Sgr A* spectrum is extremely non-thermal; any thermal component is less than 0.4% of the total luminosity we see. That is equivalent to saying that the accretion efficiency (how much radiation you get from the falling material) must be at least 99.6%, compared to the actual efficiency estimated at 0.01 to 1% for Sgr A*.On the other hand, a "horizon" by definition is a position in space "below" which photons just can't get out. Material can fall through a horizon with no difficulty, but we will never see it, or any radiation from it, again. Whether there is a black hole or some other exotic object inside the horizon, it is invisible. The accreting material's luminosity may well be "low" (as observed); the rest of its potential energy is "lost" to our observation when it falls through the horizon.

GE Microwave Makes Humming Sound with Smell

My GE microwave (JE1860SB 002) made a cracking sound and stopped working. After some research, I removed the cover and checked the fuse and it was good. I then checked the thermal flame/sensor and discovered it was burned out. I replaced the thermal flame/sensor and now the unit comes on but makes a loud humming sound and has a burnt smell. The next step (according to my research) is checking the diode (cable) which is attached to the capacitor. It appears I need to discharge the capacitor before proceeding? --- BEFORE replacing the sensor, the unit had been unplugged for over one week….AFTER replacing the sensor, the unit was plugged in for about 5 minutes on Jan 25, 2018.- What is the best/safest way to discharge the capacitor? Is an insulated screw driver or pliers needed or will a rubber handle tool work considering the time it has been unplugged? (Capacitor pictured below) - Should I remove the two connecting wires and diode before attempting to discharge the capacitor? - If the diode is bad should I still check the Magnetron? - If the diode is good, what is the next item to check/test?

How do I prevent my great solar idea from being patented?

I have solved the solar energy crises by connecting linkages on the ground in a matrix pattern with a mirror on each small  plastic linkage, that all move in the same fashion. 30x30 m grids can focus all their energy on a single thermal element. My problem is that I don't want to publish this only to have  some company patent the idea and deprive humanity of energy. What now?

ps2 battery wiring diagram?

I am making a ps2 portable and I have some questions with it. First of all I need to know how to wire the batteries to the motherboard so could somebody give me a wiring diagram for my ps2? I want to remove the power board btw. also what batteries should I get (preferably li-ion). One more thing, can I remove the heatsink in turn for some thermal paste or extra fans? I have an scph-30001 model of ps2. Pease help I cant find anything for this anywhere else.

Raspberry Pi PC temp checker

Hello forum, I'm planning on buying a raspberry Pi this week. I know a couple programming languages, but only the basics. I've had this idea for quite a while: Connect multiple thermal sensors to the Pi, and then connect the Pi to my old Android cellphone (Nexus 2), and mount the phone to my PC case, so I get read outs for the PC components (CPU, VGA, PSU, HDD, and so on). Can someone help me, and explain how I can do this? I see it as a fun hobby to get into programming, and also reuse a cell phone, so I don't throw it away.

About repairing the RROD on xbox 360's

Okay, I am thinking about getting me an xbox 360, but it is a bit over my budget so I am going to get a faulty one from ebay. But then when I look up some RROD (red ring of death) repair guides, I got suspicious about how you repair the xbox's, all  you just need to take it apart, replace the thermal paste between the heatsinks and the chips and put it all together. That just doesn't seem right... Does anyone have personal experience using this technique to repair their xbox 360?

Battery powered outdoor water dish heater

I have 3 dogs who are kept outside at our Pennsylvania home.  None of the shelters are near an electric source. With winter freezing temperatures on the way, is there a way to keep their water dishes from freezing, especially overnight?   Is there a way I can use one of the electric dog dish heaters to run, say on a battery without it costing an arm and a leg (I have 3 dogs!!)??  I'd buy the dishes at a pet supply place (see site below) for about $30, but running electricity to their kennels is not possible.  Any advice? http://www.petfooddirect.com/product/15045/K&H-Thermal-Heated-Pet-Bowl;?utm_source=nextag&utm;_medium=cse

Yellow Fever

I'm peturbed, even that more at the quick flagging response, yet no help to my situation, regardless I'll ignore that. My mirage panel amp uses IRF640 mosfet transistors, and I did something to it in the process of trying to take an amperage reading with my multimeter between the two energized heatsinks (theres two mosfets for a mono output), after the big FLASH BANG, I pulled it apart after ripping the cord out of the wall. The only damage I can find is a small black pit that the spark made in the metal heatsink (actually it was pretty deep for a spark pit). I've checked the mosfet transistors, included cleaning the MASSIVE amount of ceramic thermal paste they smeared on there with some rubbing alch to get a nice clean surface on the heat sink and transistor. By the way, would arctic silver be a good substitute for the crap paste they put on there? They're designed to make contact with the heatsink anyways so I don't see why silver thermal paste would hurt it. But besides all that, I can't find any brown spots on the PCB or any bulging capacitors (there's only two main power caps), did I perhaps just flip some kind of internal circuit breaker built into the circuit as a whole, not just as a single device I can see? I'm wondering if I should just chuck it instead of putting it back together and plugging it back in to be greeted with another spark, although it didn't smoke or anything while it was plugged in after the spark, but I got a quiet humming sound on the sub and the music stopped coming through. Again, maybe I blew some kind of breaker? Oh and I know it's my fault guys, so don't be rubbing that in my face, I come here only for help and not to be a nuisance.

Need help with DIY cooler insulation

Long time fan, first time poster. I'm looking to convert a cool-looking vintage toolbox into a heavy duty lunchbox. I'm currently prepping the metal for paint and looking into what I can use to insulate the box. I've thought of: * spray foam insulation: Good coverage and thermal protection, but not water-resistant enough (think condensation) * fiberglass insulation (pink stuff): Good, but unsure about how cold it will keep things * styrofoam: probably the one inch sheets used for basement walls below grade. Best solution so far. Before I do something that will likely mean stripping the box clean and starting over, I thought it best to see what others might have to say about this. Any and all help is greatly appreciated!

Sandia, Stirling Energy Systems set new world record for solar-to-grid conversion efficiency

31.25 percent efficiency rate topples 1984 recordALBUQUERQUE, N.M. --On a perfect New Mexico winter day -- with the sky almost 10 percent brighter than usual -- Sandia National Laboratories and Stirling Energy Systems (SES) set a new solar-to-grid system conversion efficiency record by achieving a 31.25 percent net efficiency rate. The old 1984 record of 29.4 percent was toppled Jan. 31 on SES's "Serial #3" solar dish Stirling system at Sandia's National Solar Thermal Test Facility.The conversion efficiency is calculated by measuring the net energy delivered to the grid and dividing it by the solar energy hitting the dish mirrors. using a thermoelectric cooler for High powered LEDs

Has anyone tried using a thermoelectric cooler, like this one http://www.allelectronics.com/cgi-bin/category.cgi?item=PJT-7to cool down a high powered LED star. I am considering mounting one on the back of a new Luxeon RebelI plan on ramping the current up to max (1 amp) on the led, and run the Thermoelectric cooler (TEC) as high as possible off a lead-acid battery. Strap a giant heat sink on it (maybe a fan too) plus thermal and silicone over the whole thing. It wouldn't be pretty, but it would be a neat experiment on how many lumens you could crank out of one of these things. Any inputs, suggestions, Ideas? Feel free to make an instructale on this if you want, I can't guarantee I will do it anytime soon.

Pla plastics safe for electronic project boxes?

I was planning on using a replicator 2 (using pla plastic) to print out a breakout box to contain one of my projects and it occurred to me that maybe I ought to check with the crowd here for, you know, safety and stuff.   The immediate project is a modified motion sensing light, so the box will contain a board and wiring that does have US household voltage in it.  (After modding, it no longer fits in original housing. ) Do PLA  plastics have the required resistance and thermal properties to safely do this?   I was planning to print my own box so it will fit in my project much better than stock boxes. I'm not as worried about using pla project boxes on some of the lower voltage (battery) projects I'm working on. Is that a bad assumption as well? Aas always, many thanks!

Energy return on investment for various different energy sources

We're used to thinking about the cost per unit of energy (e.g. $/gallon of gasoline) with the implicit assumption that cost is a rough indicator of what is required to obtain that energy. The Oil Drum has a nice piece on Energy Return on Investment (EROI) and the implications of using low EROI energy sources. To dive right in, it's instructive to think about the EROI of domestic oil production as a function of time:100:1 in 193030:1 in 197011-18:1 in 2000EROI on the Web part 2 of 5, (Provisional Results Summary, Imported Oil, Natural Gas)Energy return on investment, sometimes called EROI and sometimes called EROEI, is thought by many, including myself, to be a critical issue for determining the past, present and future status of human society. It is usually considered in terms of energy return on energy investment, but it can also be considered in terms of energy return on monetary investment. While much of human progress has been attributed, rightfully, to technology, much of that technology has been a means of using more energy for human ends. This is true for fire, knife blades and spear points (energy concentrating devices), the development of agriculture and the increase in its productivity and, essentially all aspects of the industrial revolution.EROI is simply the energy delivered by an energy-obtaining activity compared to the energy required to get it. If the numerator and denominator are expressed in the same units (barrels per barrel, MegaJoules per MegaJoule) the result is a dimensionless ratio, i.e. 100:1 or 10:1). Obviously a higher ratio implies a more desirable fuel than a lower one, other things being equal (which is rarely the case). The concept is extremely simple in theory but often very difficult in execution, mostly because society generally maintains its records in monetary rather than energy terms. Another problem is that the U.S. Government has not supported such studies in a consistent fashion and it is my perception that the quality of some energy records as are kept by e.g. the U.S. Departments of Energy and of Commerce appear to be deteriorating in recent years. Thus deriving the energy cost of getting energy (or most other things) is generally somewhat, and oftentimes exceedingly, difficult. A second problem is that the usual measure of the quantity of a fuel, its heat value, often does not give a full assessment of that fuel's ability to do economic or other work. Most simply electricity and thermal heat from e.g. coal or oil have a great difference in their ability to do work, such as we are willing to trade three or four heat units of coal or oil in a thermal plant for one thermal unit of higher quality electricity. Thus if the input and output fuels are of different quality then it is often thought desirable to weight in some way the inputs and the outputs. A third problem is that it is important to consider boundaries: how large should we draw the boundaries of the energy analysis for the inputs? We will consider these issues in far more detail in later publications but there are many reasons why it is important to make summaries of EROI available at this time even though many uncertainties exist in the numbers that we present here, and indeed with any numbers that might be possible to generate.via jforbess

Refrigerated Dog Bed

Ahoy-hoy, My first post on Instructables! Anyhow, we own a 10-month old Great Pyrenees and live in the drought stricken and warm Southern California climate. As summer approaches we have been looking at options to help keep her cool and we haven't had the greatest of luck with cooling beds available on the market, our Coonhound tore up the first one as a 50 lb pup during his first summer. I was thinking about potentially re-purposing an old mini-fridge coolant system into a cooling bed. My very initial thoughts are as follows: 1. Salvage working mini-fridge 2. Disassemble cooling system 3. Create bed surface using sheet metal (our Pyr won't sleep on the any of the multiple plush beds available to her, only concrete or dirt) 4. Create mount base for bed, ideal scenario would have a force sensitive switch that would only turn on refrigeration unit when dog is on the bed. 5. Thermally attach refrigerator expander coils to the underside of the bed, most likely via solder but could bolt together with thermally conductive paste 6. Rig up an enclosure and support structure for the compressor, heat exchange coils, and electronics. I imagine the bed surface resembling the weight scales at the vet but with some provisions to attach a padded fabric cover. Things to be addressed: 1. Ensuring proper temperature regulation...she has a thick durable coat but don't want to over due things. Temperature feedback shouldn't not be too much of a hurdle using an Arduino or using the existing "twisty-turny" nob in the fridge 2. Properly disassembling the salvaged fridge, don't want to unnecessarily release the refrigerant and defeat the whole purpose 3. Make this thing sturdy enough to survive the wear and tear of one and/or probably two 85 lb plus dogs Is this too far fetched (no pun intended, my dogs aren't retrievers)? Any thoughts and advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Rich

How to make a 1-1.5 volt voltage regulator at 15 amps?

Hi, I want to make a high current (15 or 16 amp) voltage regulator that outputs around 1 to 1.5 volts. Does anyone know how this could be done cheaply and easily? I've looked at the 15 amp schematic in the LM338 datasheet (http://www.ti.com/lit/ds/symlink/lm138.pdf  page 11), which uses 3 LM338s in parallel, but I'm pretty sure that takes the minimum output voltage to about 4v, way too much for me. I've looked at using 2n3055 transistor, but it seems like I'd need ridiculous heatsinking and probably fans to avoid thermalling out. I'm thinking of taking my power from an old PSU, 5 v rails, so not too much of a voltage drop, but it's hard to find stuff that can handle these kind of currents. I'm pretty much stumped right now, anyone got any ideas?

iBook Overheating?

I've made a post on apple's forums and bumped it several times and no one wants to help me, I still haven't gotten one single reply and it's been almost a week. Anyways, I recently pulled it apart and took the heatsink off and put thermalpaste on the cpu and removed the thermal pad which was getting worn out by the looks of it. But now it runs rather hot, I'm not sure if it's always ran this hot or not as I was stupid and didn't look before it was apart. But it runs around 50-60 C idle with just msn on and up to 70 C when I play games. I'm really worried about this. Theres two adjustable nuts by the cpu and I thought I tightened it enough, should I just tighten it until it won't anymore? Thank you everyone that helps me. I know this isn't a computer forum, but I'm sick of waiting when I can see post after post being made and answered in the same forum I have mine in. Apples suck, yes they do

insulating radiator cover

I'm looking for suggesting for upping the r-value on top of my radiator. Every window in my apartment has a radiator underneath it. I'd like to have some plants by those windows ('cause y'know, they need light and all) but I'm concerned about heat from below drying & killing the plants. A couple of the radiators have covers, but they're metal, so no insulation there. Ceramic pots may provide some insulation, but I'd really like to lay down a layer of some kind of building insulation proper just to be safe. The question is, what kind? Batting won't work, and the foam insulation panels I've seen at the hardware store I know are a fire hazard... plus not too fond of plastic-type materials. My dad suggested something he called "thermal block" which I believe is aerated concrete panels, but which I can't find a source to purchase. I'd like to spend less than $20, preferably less than $10 on this. Please help!
