food for teeth ?

Hello. I've heard that teeth were able to absorb some substances/molecules thanks to the porosity of the enamel. Unlike bones, as they are not self-regenerating from the outside, I was wondering what substances may be usefull to offset the erosion of the enamel (remineralization ?). Is there something that could be concidered as a "food" for teeth ? Also, about dental caries, as they are mainly caused by bacteria eating "fermentable carbohydrates" who generate acidity, here is a question that may sound stupid, but that is serious : - to make the work of those bacteria harder, is it better to sleep with the mouth wide opened (oxygened mouth) or with the mouth closed (anaerobic conditions) ?

Adjustable Signal...radio, bluetooth, etc.

I am trying to figure out how to control a device that will be "off" while in the range of a transmitter (short range...under 10ft) and then turn on when it goes beyond the range of the signal. I would also like it to be an adjustable range. I was thinking the device would be "on" constantly as the transmitter tells it not to activate, but once it leaves the signal range it would activate.  Any thoughts? Thank you in advance.

Bluetooth Wireless Earbuds

I REALLY want Wireless headphones, but the caveat is that I want them to be earbuds.  I've seen people do all sorts of things to the big bulky ones, but I need these for stealth; I wanna listen to music in school! haha Don't try and tell me I ought to be studying either! =P The original plan was to use an RF transmitter and a RF receiver for each earbud, but RF modulation is static-ey and is subject to a LOT of interference. So the alternative is Bluetooth or other means of digital modulation.  I can't find a way to make your own "bluetooth" per se, leaving the only option to cannibalize another bluetooth device. Below is a quick sketch of what I had in mind.  I know there's more to it like resistors and whatnot, but I'll let you folks figure that stuff out. XD The idea is that the headphone hook around your ear and the receiver will hang off the back of your ear.  If you have any questions, just ask! =D Thanks for your help!!

Blue tooth, extra values

When using HC-05 and a bluetooth App to transmit a string like “hello” to an Arduino, I get the reading as * 12|99|99|hello# Any reason why I am getting those initial values before the string hello? How is this extra values getting into the buffer? The code is while (Serial.available()) { char inChar = Serial.read(); inputString += inChar; } Serial.println (inputString); inputString=””;

Speed sensor

I have a 60 tooth ferromagnetic ring gear with a speed sensor attached. Each passing of a tooth creates a pulse in the sensor sending a signal to the ecu for calculation of attained rpms. It calculates the interval between the teeth to obtain the rpms, thus determining when to kick in the rev limiter on my 06 polaris ranger XP 4x4. Is it possible or even practical to eliminate every other tooth to "fool" the sensor into a lower rpm reading, and creating higher rpm levels within the motor?

A few questions for recumbent bicycle makers

Okay, as the title says, i've got a few questions for anyone who's made a proper recumbent bicycle. First: in the way of moving the handlebars back, how do you attach a bicycle chain sprocket to the top of a fork tube? is it welded? or is it a special type of sprocket with a sort of crankshaft keyway (like engine crankshafts have keyed sprockets for their timing chains) this is obviously to relocate the handlebars further back or under the rider so that you can lean back (as most recumbents allow) Second: if you're to put a larger tire on the rear of your bike (for example, a small (50-500cc motorcycle) rear tire), how would you go about converting the chain link sizes. most motorcycle tires have a shorter link distance, and look like their links are sort of squashed together as opposed to bicycle chains. would you find a way to put a larger toothed sprocket on the rear tire or put a smaller toothed sprocket on one side of an intermediary and a larger toothed on the opposite side? If I have any more i'll post them, these are my pretty basic "burning questions" of recumbent making.

Another Teeth Forum

Hey, just saw there were alot of responses to the other forum and I'm having trouble finding anything that makes me feel better on the Web, so I figured I'd ask here. I had 1 wisdom tooth that had grown in properly and rotted, pull about 6 days ago. I'm still having "I need serious painkillers" pain. I'm pretty confident that its not dry socket. none of the pain is really coming from inside my mouth other then the side of my tounge. most of the pain is in my chin jaw line and up into my temple. I've had plenty of extractions and they all heal enough not to hurt after about three days. Am I gonna die?.....lol...... no but seriously..... is this normal?..... like maybe from him reefing on my jaw to lossen the tooth? or am I screwed and should go back to the dentist?

Revolver with swing out cylinder

I was looking at guns on Wikipedia and saw a pic of a revolver with a swing out cylinder. I went straight to work and made the swing out cylinder, but I couldn't figure out how to make the rest of the gun and keep the cylinder from moving all over the place. I don't have a digital camera, but I can tell you how I made it. 1. Take a blue rod 2. Attach a dark grey connector on 1 end of the rod 3. Put 1 grey cylinder spacer on the rod, followed by 2 blue ring spacers 4. Put the blue rod through the hole of another dark grey connector 5. Put 2 more blue ring spacers on, followed by 1 more grey cylinder spacer and attach 1 more dark grey connector to the other end of the blue rod 6. Take 1 white rod and snap on 2 white snowflake connectors, then snap the rod into the dark grey connector in the middle of the blue rod (the dark grey connector should be in the middle of the 2 white snowflake connectors) 7. Take another white rod and attach a dark grey connector on 1 end of it, then slide the white rod through the hole of 1 of the dark grey connectors on the blue rod, then slide on another grey cylinder spacer and attach 1 yellow connector on top of the white rod 8. Do #7, but on the other side of the blue rod 9. For the handle, I took 3 green connectors and snapped them on to 1 white rod, then put 3 small green rods on the bottom of each green connector (Look below to find a little bit better explanation) 10. Take 3 yellow connectors and attach them to a white rod, then connect all 3 to the 3 green rods mentioned in #9 11. Take 3 more green connectors and attach them to a white rod and add 3 small green rods to the top of the 3 green connectors and attach them to the 3 yellow connectors in #10 BETTER EXPLANATION 1. A green connector has 4 places for 4 rods (I will call them teeth) 2. From left to right, it goes empty tooth, white rod, empty tooth, small green rod 3. A yellow connector has 5 teeth for 5 rods 4. From left to right, it goes small green rod (from the green connectors mentioned above), white rod, empty tooth, empty tooth, small green rod 5. Same as #2, but it goes small green rod (from the yellow connectors mentioned above), white rod, empty tooth, empty tooth If anyone knows what I'm talking about and makes these pieces & has a digital camera, please take pics and show me so ppl can see what I'm talking about. Also, if anyone finds out how to make the rest of the gun, please tell me and show me how you made it (but please don't take credit for my design of the cylinder & handle. If you mod/have to mod any of these 2 parts to make the rest of the gun, don't forget to credit me for the original design of the 2 parts). Also, if anyone does make the gun, please post an instructable for it. I would love to see the gun that I almost got to make. So please tell me where to go to get the instructable I you decide to post it. Also, the gun doesn't have to shoot anything. Thanks to everyone that contributes.

Road Trip/Pilgramage

Me and my partner are planning a rode trip from Seattle to Denver to see Thich Nhat Hahn in august. So far our route is taking us through yellow stone and along the bear tooth highway. On the way home we are planing to go through the north part of Utah and through Idaho back into Washington. Anyways I was wondering if anyone has suggestions for places we should go see. I am particularly looking for places that are off the map.

push button contacts fail

Hi, i disassembled my full-automated coffeemachine as the push buttons for programs failed. The buttons are a line of rubber and the contacts on the platine are toothed while each rubber contact got tiny plates that bridge the contacts on the platine. I guess that the contact plates lack of conductivity - any suggestions what i can do to improve the conductivity? I thought bout buying contact foil and glue it over the rubber contacts, but i don't know, if this is the best solution.

big telephone receiver for cell phone

Friends, I hate talking on the cell phone; it's too small, especially when I'm talking from home. I keep a land line so I can chat for hours on a regular sized telephone. However, I'm moving next week and won't be able to spring for a land line. Can anyone help me use an old-time big phone receiver with a cell phone? Blue tooth maybe? Or perhaps attach something to/around the cell phone that allows me to hold it between my head and shoulder and talk into a mouthpiece that's near my mouth? Thank you, evil geniuses, all... xo

PCB etching left over paper

Hey everyone! I'm in the process of etching my first PCB. I have a few questions. I'm using the toner transfer method, with hydrochloric acid and a little hydrogen peroxide as an etchant. Anyway, I transferred the toner to the board, but I believe the glossy paper I used may have been a little too thick. The toner transferred correctly, but i can manage to get all of the paper off. I've tried a tooth brush and a soft towel. My question is, if I just go forth and etch the board will the paper dissolve with the copper on the board and give me a clean result anyway? Will the copper covered by the paper not be removed? are there any cons to this? (such as not being able to reuse my etchant) Thank you all, your help is appreciated Ken

Suggestions for harmonica hybrids

Hey, I just posted my giga-monica instructable and was wondering just what else I could use. To save you the search, I've hollowed out a spot about an inch or so long and just wide enough to house the connector of a usb device into a cheap harmonica. The idea being that you can insert something here to prove to your friends that yes, you don't have a life. So far, i've tried a flash drive, a 'Blues-tooth adaptor' (conceived solely for the name), but cannot think of ANY other devices you could use.. at all. In fact, to be blunt - what tiny usb devices can a computer use? (Picture shows roughly how much room you've got - no specific measurements because I'm looking for generic items, not specific models) Thanks in advance, McDouche

Tinkerdays 2012 | DIY | prototyping an arduino wall plotter

Tinkerdays 2012 | a 60 hour prototyping event Already the second day of tinkering and we are starting to make progress on our current project, "the hemiphterograaf". We are creating a wall plotter / printer based on the kritzler schematics. Check http://tinkerdays.wordpress.com to keep yourself updated, join the conversation, tell us what you want us to improve and let us know if you think we should write an extensive tutorial. Today will be exiting. - With the use of thermoplastics (beats lego & meccano for certain applications) we will tinker the pen holder. - install the arduino blue tooth shield - update the testcode to synch the steppermotors - complete the stand on which we will secure the steppermotors (which hold the penholder via thread) - install the stepper motor pulleys (and pray they work, if it does, it deserves its own tutorial, more on this later) current state: we'll continue the day at 24/07/2012 | 12:30 GMT

Best way to cut plexiglass without a laser cutter?

I need to cut a 9" diameter circle out of a 12"x12", 1/8" thick piece of clear cast acrylic (making an infinity mirror). I've cut this stuff with laser cutters before but don't currently have access to one. I have a circular glass cutter but I'm not really clear how that does me any good - it scores a circle but the acrylic doesn't seem brittle enough to snap off nicely along a circular line. I have a jigsaw with a wood blade but that just snagged and made the acrylic shatter. I have made rectangular cuts before by scoring a straight line with a utility knife, then lining that cut up with the edge of a table, and hitting the suspended piece of acrylic with a mallet - it snaps right off. I'm just not sure how to make a circular cut. Finer-tooth jigsaw blade? Approximate it using the score-and-snap method for a many-sided polygon with a bunch of straight cuts?

Poseidon- High Powered Modified H2O Rocket

Just thought I would give those interested a sneak peak at the Poseidon's main booster module.Construction-12 x 1.25L Soda bottles spliced with external sleeves using Sikaflex 11FC.The Poseidon's booster module is not yet complete, it has another 7L of capacity to be added. The booster will then be combined with several other modules before Poseidon is ready for launch. You may also like to note the quick attach/release fin system. They are saw toothed sign holders normally found in stationary shops. They allow the fins not only to be attached perpendicular to the body, but also provide a reproducible fixing method.Although this is not my preferred method of splicing, Aircommand.com has put together an excellent tutorial which can show you the principal. My method (which I DID NOT create) involves shrinking the inner bottle with our curled lip. Air command in that tutorial reduces the outside sheath from a larger capacity bottle to suit. The method I use does not call for the use of different sized bottles or a blow torch, just boiling water. Air Commands Splicing tutorialAircommand.com

Dirt bike handlebars

Hey everyone, i have a 2003 XR100 four stroke Honda dirt bike and I am on a quest to transform it into a beast hair scrambler trail bike. So far I have decided to add bark busters, one of those bendable hinge shifters, a back sprocket with one less tooth (will be 49), a new front sprocket because the teeth are bent, I need to sharpen the foot pegs and brake peg, a new back tire because the one it has now is bald, and shorten the handlebars. The reason i posted this forum is because i am wondering if anyone can tell me what the best way to shorten the handlebars is. I figure i am going to loosen everything, take it off, measure 4 or 5 inches with a permanent marker, then grind it off, but i dont know how to get the grips off. will i need to buy new ones? any way, if anybody can tell me how to shorten the handlebars, i would be very thankful. also, if anyone thinks i need anything else, could you please mention that too? thanks!

Abnormal Cyst Within The Jaw Anyone?

Well this is just too interesting not to post. Turns out after going to the dentist for a routine cleaning, that I have a spot in the right side of my jaw he wanted looked at. After going to a dental surgeon he concluded that it is a type of cyst in the bone of the jaw that forms when a wisdom tooth doesn't come in but instead forms a growth of tissue in that cavity. So thinking this was what was going on he went ahead with the normal procedure. To numb me up till I'm almost knocked out, cut the gum line cut the jaw bone to the area and then grind (yes grind with a drill...) the cavity out. After the cyst was removed they would then continue to grind the walls of the cavity to fill in the "hole". From there it would fill in and regrow the bone tissue and heal everything back up with time. But of course that wasn't the case with me. While he was working everything was fine until he came to a hollow area. Hollow. No cyst, no tissue, nothing but a string of a nerve running right through the robin egg sized pocket of air in the middle. He was very confused but after looking at it proceeded to just grind the edges to fill it in and took some for studying. In his 30+ years of doing this he has never heard of or seen anything like it. But he says there's not really anything wrong and that it should be fine. Still....now where's that gauze I had...

Oops!

Over the years I've done a lot of things that didn't work out well, and I try learn something from them  hoping to avoid similar problems in the future. I think ibles  needs a place to share these 'educational moments'  to help others avoid pitfalls and to console with laughter anyone who is sitting amidst the ruins of their own project.   So here's the  place to share.    I'll go first........... My first dramatic failure at about age 8 - Gluing glitter onto balloons. Not a good idea. The glue popped the balloon (I think it was 'airplane glue' ) The result was glue and glitter everywhere (including in my eyes) and a lot of unhappiness. Then there was the hot glue surprise -  Using a glue gun to close drip irrigation holes in a garden hose.  It plugged the holes and worked just fine in the overcast cool spring weather. Then a rare sunny day  heated the hose, and all those plugs melted and the holes started jetting water.  I hadn't realized how hot a green hose in the sun could get. And I have made some just plain stupid moves - like spending hours pulling all the shreds of paper out of the toothed wheels on the paper shredder.... you know how they get sucked inside.  After getting it all clear I thought I might as well lubricate the thing with spray silicon stuff.  So far so good. And then I was so excited to see how it much better it would work, I turned it on.  Flash of flame, slightly singed eyebrows, and a TOTALLY dead smoking shredder.  Ummm.... it's really worthwhile to let solvents totally evaporate before turning on electrical things.

Toshiba Dvd Player Problem

This lady gave me an older dvd player (Toshiba SD-2150) and she had it hooked up at her house, but the cd started skipping about half way in, and it would contiunously cut out for 10 seconds then resume playback and then cut out again and so on and so forth. As you'll see in the pictures, I've taken it apart down to the laser assembly (only took me 10 minutes incase you're wondering). The apparent problem to me is something is wrong with the gear assembly that moves the laser head. When I turn it by hand, it moves freely for about half a turn then it feels like the gear is catching on something, and if I turn it harder it keeps moving, it's not stripped, but it almost "feels" like theres a hump in the gear or something. I keep looking at the gear and nothing looks wrong with the teeth or anything! I was just going to put 3-in-1 oil on it and see how that helps and put it back together.  Does anyone have any suggestions? *********UPDATE********* I tried many things with various tools I had sitting here to try and straighten out the one tooth on the gear with no success. However with the little bit of melting/bending I did and the 3-in-1 oil, I got it to catch on the gear less easily. After re-installing the optical assembly and testing it on my stereo with the cover off, it appears not to skip anymore, DVD's too. However, I'm still not confident in how long this "repair" is going to work. The best solution I think is to replace the smallest gear on the motor, but I cannot find one close enough.

East Coast HPV Challenge - Quick Update

So yesterday started the east coast human powered vehicle challenge by ASME. Yesterday was the design portion of the event (and safety inspection/testing). So far we've seen lots of two and three wheelers -- everything from 100% upper body powered (for paraplegics) to a LWB tadpole leaning trike (wheels and all -- no banana lean there). Someone even showed up with a 75+ tooth front chain ring (it's a monster)! We had teams from all over, including two fro Venezuela. Some vehicles are fully faired, more partially. Many of man (and woman) hours invested in everything ;) First picture -- UCF (us!) - in the background is last year's model (complete with scars from several crashes). Note this year's design has rear view mirrors, ventilation and a vacu-formed windscreen :D Our ventilation is even adjustable (climate control perhaps? :P). Second and Third Picture: Leaning Trike -- also has conventional steering (no lockout mechanism though). Really cool to watch - they scored second in the "design innovation" category of the design competition. (Shameless Plug: we scored third in that category). A big deal with this leaning trike from Arkansas, the started DESIGNING in January! Believe me when I tell you - that is HUGE progress to make in such short time. On top of that -- almost all of their team members are getting married soon (their finance's must be VERY tolerant) and there's only something like 4 or 5 team members! I was really happy to see someone bring a leaning trike -- I give them a tip of my hat ;) Fourth Picture: This is what a high speed streamliner resembles -- note the landing gear (very awesome idea). They had some "knarly" crashed today involving hay bales, skidding and mulch (at the sprint event - more on that later). But, true to their safety claims -- no injuries. Fifth Picture: Probably one of my favorites at the event - Tadpole trike tandem (for people that hate each other :p). I want to test ride it (and they're cool enough to let people do that too!). I also say their frame is one of the best design wise (appears very stiff). Last Picture: Everyone listening to the official before the sprint event. Max speed (by that red streamliner I believe) at the sprint event today was 41mph (male rider) ;)
