The forum topic to post stuck forum topics

Lately there have been a ton of topics that just get stuck for no reason at all. Here's where to post them when you make a perfectly legitimate, and not possibly controversial or offensive topic but it just won't show up after a period of several hours. If you spam or post controversial things, I'll delete and repost the topic. This is only for stuff that gets stuck for no apparent reason, as poor Kiteman keeps having happen to him.

Clicking a forum topic takes me to a blank page.

I went to look at one of my topics I posted.  It took me to a blank page with nothing on it.  I tried with a different topic.  Same thing.  I tried with all the topics in the first page of the "life" category.  Same thing.  I tried clicking a reply I got on the topics.  Same thing. I'm using the newest version of Firefox, and Windows Vista if this helps anything. *Edit* the problem seems to have disappeared for now, but it's still odd that it happened in the first place.

Creating a Forum Topic within a group should be fixed

According to a recent comment from Rachel, it should be possible to go to a Group, select the [+ New Topic] link, and have the comment appear both in a forum category and in the Group's own list of topics. This is a test to confirm that the fix is deployed :-) I am creating it within the Instructables Help Group, and categorizing it to the "help : feedback" Forum.

Feature Request: Sort Group Topics RECENT by default

As announced this morning by Rachel (and confirmed by me), it is now possible to create discussion topics within a Group. However, when we view a Group, those topics are presented in the order in which they were created, from OLDEST to newest. That means, for many Groups, the new topics are completely invisible to anyone visiting. There is no way to change that sort order from the Web interface.I would like to request that the "sort=RECENT" CGI argument be used by default for the presentation of Group topics, both on the Group page and also with the view all link. I have confirmed that adding this argument by hand to the URL has the expected effect.

Slideshows in forum topics

Zachninme put together this sweet way to embed slideshows in forum topics. I'm posting it because it requires HTML in the body of the text, and only admins can do that. What do you think? Is this something you would use? The images in the Slideshow below are from this forum post. They are not from an existing Slideshow.Show/Hide Slideshow

"Last post" bug in "Your Forum Topics" listing

I just ran into an interesting bug in the generation of my "Your Forum Topics" list. See the annotated image capture below from my Web browser (Firefox 2.0.0.8 running on MacOSX 10.4.11). I had posted a reply in the first topic shown, but the "last post by" indicator was duplicated to all three topics. Clearly there were no actual replies generated, since the second and third both show zero.

Inexplicable Popularity

This is an issue that has always puzzled me, and more recently affected me. And it is entirely based on the phenomenon of an old forum topic being suddenly and randomly restored to the front of the board after an extended vacation to the back of the list. My topic, "Facebook for Nerds" has been one of the recent reincarnations to be affected and no matter how much it pleases me that someone new felt a need to comment on my original post, It begs the question of "why now" and "why this one"?

List of Forums doesn't mention new topics, just comments?

I consider this a bug; y'all might call it a feature request. Whatever... :-)The two images below were captures within less than a minute of one another. The list of forums (first image) shows that "RachelisBored" was the most recent person to post to the Art Forum, three days ago. However, the Art Forum itself (second image) claims that "softrevolution" posted more recently, earlier today! The difference is that "softrevolution" created a new forum topic, while "RachelisBored" added a comment to an existing topic thread. To me, this is a bug. A posting is a posting is a posting. Is this something that is easy to fix, or are top-level Forum Topics classified differently in the database than comments?

User unable to create forum topics (including bug reports)

User RC-1207SEV asked me to post a bug report on his behalf.  He has not been able to create forum topics for the past couple of days:  "When I try to publish one, it just takes me to a plain white screen and never loads. I haven't tried to make an ible yet, but I fear the same problem will arise." RC-1207SEV is using Windows Vista and Internet Explorer 7. I PM'ed him to get browser and OS information, but haven't gotten a reply yet.  I recall seen a similar bug report from someone else, so this may not be an isolated incident.

Could you indicate which Forum Topics listings are "Pro-Members-Only", please?

Whenever I look at "Community: all: posts & topics," I keep clicking on stuff that seems interesting, only to find that - oh, rats! - it's from the Pro Members Only Forums Categories. ...But there's nothing on the "Posts & Topics" listing to indicate that it's thus restricted.Once the category really gets going, I fear I'll find myself fruitlessly clicking on listings like "Wild Party at ewilhelm's - Naked Robot Pictures!!!", and that I'll ultimately wind up in a great big ball of Naked-Robot-Picture-deprived frustration.Ironically, the only reason I haven't become a member yet is that I don't want the "Pro" badge all over my screen name, avatar, and Instructables. Since "Pro" badge can and does appear in any number of places where, In My Extremely Humble Opinion, it is not particularly useful; could you please also put it in a place where I, and perhaps others, would find it quite helpful - to wit, on the pro-members-only Forum Topics listings?Thank you.(Note 1: something about this business of the "Pro" badges seems to have put me very solidly in touch with my Inner Petulant Whiner. I've tried to keep the whiney petulance to minimum, but do also offer my apologies for those bits that seem inevitably to leak through.)(Note B: Any and all references to festivites hosted by ewilhelm, and/or to photographic evidence of Robot in a state of deshabille, are purely hypothetical. Any resemblance to actual robots, people, or events, is entirely coincidental.)

Bumped Topics

I (along with other members of the Instructables Community) have noticed a problem with bumped topics. Topics that were originally posted over 2 years ago are being bumped to the top of the forums. In most cases this is due to comments that don't even contribute to the conversation. What solutions are there to this problem? I don't like the idea of locking topics. This puts a stop to contributions that might actually be useful. What solutions do you guys have?

Feature Suggestion, Topic closing

After getting a comment on a very old topic and noticing some come up it occurred to me that giving users the capacity to close their old topics or possibly leave it at the discretion of a time limit or a team of, well not quite executioners but something or other may be rather useful, mainly to stop old topics coming back up without reason, some stay active for a very long time, others just occasionally pop up. If the topics were merely closed but still existent then they'd still be available for reference and any specific comments about something could be sent to the user in question's orangeboard, it's just a thought, I'm not saying all old topics need taken out back and, eh sent to the farm but it might keep the forums a bit fresher, without causing confusion...

Feature request: "Sorting" choice in topics lists under Groups

It isn't obvious to me how the page-generator chooses the order in which forum topics are listed on a Group's main page. It would be Really Nice if the section bar include choices for the order in which topics are presented (by date posted, by date of last reply, by number of replies, by author, etc.).

SciFi Essay Topics - Any Ideas?

For school, I have to write a 6-8 page essay, double spaced, about a chose topic. My teacher said we could pick our own, but she (a) has to approve of it, and (b) it has to be mysterious/unsolved/SciFi/urban legend/consipracy theory. Also, any suspicious crimes, like that concerning Lizzie Borden, are also accepted. My friend is writing of the Chupacabra. Does anyone have any ideas on some good topics, that I won't be straining to find info to write about, i.e., a topic with a ton of info, so much so that I have to condense it? I love the genre that my teacher gave, conspiracy theories, SciFi, and urban legends are my thing. I just can't think of any that would be worth writing so much about. Thanks, I appreciate it!

Posts, Topics, and Replies

Its not huge, but its a bit confusing. In some places, you call them "posts" and "replies", whereas others you refer to them as "topics" and "posts". The overlapping "posts", where it takes on two different meanings, is slightly annoying. I personally prefer the latter method, just from prior experience.

Group a topic posted in not showing up in All topic list

. In the topic list for the All forum (and maybe for others, as well) the group that a topic was posted in doesn't always show up. Eg, sometimes a topic that should list like this: 5 Special Effectsreplies posted 11 days ago by impossiblecorey in Film Makers on Instructableswill be listed as: 5 Special Effectsreplies posted 11 days ago by impossiblecoreyinstead.

Pro topic suggestion

Hi, I noticed that a lot of forum topics, when clicked, link you to the pro page. I know this is because they are pro-only forums. However, there is no way to identify a pro topic from a free topic. My suggestion is that we add a pro symbol before or after the topic name so that we know what is what, and don't waste our time clicking on it. Any other ideas? -J

Vanishing forum topic -- created by "add topic" in Group, but not appearing

About 20 minutes ago, I created a forum topic https://www.instructables.com/community/My-chemistry-textbook-was-right-all-along/. I went to the Physics Group and used the + new topic link to create the posting, classifying it in Forums : Science. The topic is not showing up in the Community "recent" listing, even after I added a bump-comment myself. Could Ed, Rachel, or somebody give the database a kick? Thanks!

Featue Request: "posted in XYZ" in user's "Forum Topics" list?

In the normal lists of Forum topics under Community (e.g., Science) some of the entries have "posted ... in XYZ" showing from which Group the topic originated. It would be very helpful to have that information in my own list of topics.

How are forum topics sorted?

When I pull up a specific Community Forum, the default behaviour is to show topics sorted by "recent" -- which one has had a comment added now? However, there are some topics which seem to "stick" at the top of the list, for example "Instructables Store" and "World's Largest Piñata" in Community Blog. These "always recent" topics appear to come either from Robot or from I'bles Staff.

Repeating RSS Feed Topics

I'm subscribed to the RSS feeds for Instructables, News, Forum Topics, Comments (to me), and my Personal Messages Inbox. And they all repeatedly send me the forum topics. Most of the "new" items I get in all of my Instructables RSS feeds have already been sent to me before. It's incredibly annoying.

The resurrection of year old forum topics (we need a closed topic button)

So this has been brought up a few times before but we seriously need a way trusted members of the site (like the feature team) and the staff can close topics. Because lately alot of topics have been resurrected. And although some topics (like posting games or so) should be able to stay open for posting most of the other topics should be closed after a while. For example some guy responded to an "old ipod" topic that was posted more then two years ago and had zero replies before he replied. It's highly unlikely that that guy will still respond let alone be interested in the message "nobody's going to give you an ipod" So my suggestion is that the members of the feature team and the staff get a "close topic" button. This way when a patch contest or forum bug or somet other old topic in that matter is closed/solved/simply to old they close down the topic. The topic then gets moved to a special section called "closed topics" where it's open for viewing but posting is not available anymore. I know this has been suggested a few times before but I'm just putting it back out there because I think we really need something like this on the site. Suggestions and or thoughts are welcome and encouraged :) Michel
