Why do Americans hold their torches in an overhand way ? Answered

Is there a particular reason why Americans, (especially police officers, in films at least), hold their torches in an overhand position? It seems quite uncomfortable; I have never seen anyone in the UK hold a torch like that, we seem to align our thumbs along the top with the torch held out in front of us.. Anyway this observation is only based on films that I have watched so it might not actually be the case; but I can't help thinking about it when it happens during a film. Help me to let it go...

how do blow torches work

Hi I need help see I have been on the internet for days looking for a diagram, or someone, that could tell me how a blow torch works. Like if there is pressurized air in it, as my friend tells me but he's not a very reliable source. So please if you know such information or have a diagram of it I would be very thankful.

What keeps diy water torches from "back firing" ? Answered

I wish to make one using electrolysis. Electricity breaks the water into hydrogen and oxygen, then the gas then goes through a bubbler and then to the torch. Can water torches backfire because of the oxygen in the HHO gas?

Hello everyone, I am trying to build a plasma torch. What is a plasma torch you might ask? A plasma torch is used in a process call plasma arc gasification. I want to build a small scale working prototype for proof of concept. If anyone could help, it would be great. I can collect different MOTs or NSTs if necessary, just fill me in. Thanks for any input or direction.

Propane torch

I've considered several times buying a propane torch to burn weeds in my driveway, or melt ice. The one I'd like to have looks like a cane with a threaded connector on the handle end to attach a propane bottle. They all seem overpriced to me and I've always wondered if I could make one cheaper than I could buy one. I can find the tubing I need but I've never been able to find the rest of the parts.  Any suggestions or would someone like to post an instructable showing how to make one?

Custom Minecraft Wall Torch

Hello all. This is my first time here so, I hope I can find the info I need. I've never used a soldering iron before and know little about wiring, but I'm eager to learn. I'm looking to customize an electronic Mainecraft wall torch that I have, with a flickering light. However, I wanted to come here first to see if anyone has opened one of these up before. I was planing on using a flickering light from one of those electric candles. I'm not sure if it's as simple as switching out the LED or if I have to rip more parts from the candle. I appreciate any help you can give. Thanks

I need to add a time to flashlight or lantern so that it will switch itself off after maybe 20 seconds, what is the simplest way to do this please?

I'd imagined it activating with a momentary switch, then maybe a dial /potentiometer to adjust the time, which would definatiely be less than a minute. I don't have any way to make up a pcb so please bear that in mind, thankyou

LED vs Incandescent?

Is it just me, or do incandescent torches generally have more throw than LED ones with the same power?             P.S : I recently found a 3V, 0.3A xenon torch globe. Would you say that it would be brighter than a 2.4V 0.7A torch globe if they are both run off 2 AA batteries?

LED reflectors? Answered

Why don't they make LEDs without the reflectors? I find that LEDs don't throw their light very far (it spreads out quickly) and even if you were to put them in a torch, the majority of the light would go out of the torch and spread then, making the reflector quite useless.

Incandescent to LED torch mod? Answered

All the LEDs I have seem to have not so good throw. (Even my 3 watt luxeon is outmatched in throw by a 1.2-ish watt incandescent  torch), so I was wondering how I coud increase an LED's throw. I noticed that the light from the globe was not very bright, but seeing as how it throws light in all different directions, it probably gave off just as much, if not more, light; probably why the reflector was there. So I figured that if I got a bunch of LEDs, then put them into a torch, pointing them to the side at the reflector, the throw of the light would be greater than if I just pointed the LEDs forward, right?

Pinhole Slide Projector

Hi! I have no idea whether this is the right place to post this topic, but it does say 'burning questions' and that's what this is, so here goes. :-) I've had this idea for a kind of pinhole lense slide projector. The (very basic) diagram is pretty self explanatory, and I was wondering if anyone's tried/heard of anything like this, and whether it could work? Do you think a 100 LED torch would be bright enough? Also, if I'm right in thinking that LEDs don't get hot, there shouldn't be a risk of overheating/fire should there? Thanks! Looking forward to hearing what you think! :-)

Where to get stainless steel sheets for oxyHydrogen generator? Answered

I am looking for thin stainless steel sheets to use as the electrodes for an oxyHydrogen producing "dry cell" set up to power a welding / cutting torch. It should be in sheets that can be evenly devided into 6 inch squares.  I am not sure what alloy it has to be so if you know about stainless steel alloys I would love advice. The electrolyte will be NaOH, and it will probably run at 120V AC at as many amps as it will draw but I might put in one of those light dimmer knobs to control it a little.

Self-Solar Powered LED Flashlight? Answered

I know it would not be 100% efficient, or even close for that matter. But I was wondering how much battery life could be "recycled" by directly projecting the light from the flashlight onto the solar panel(s)? Say at a 45 degree angle beneath the light. Obviously this wouldn't be a high output LED, and another question at that.. Would a Red LED be more efficient or would the PV cell not do so well with Red LED? Thought this would be a neat idea even if it would only recycle 5-10% battery life. I would love for someone to implement this idea into a project and see how efficient it is.

i need more amps for my hho generator.......HELPPPPPPP

I've built a hho generator (the spiral electrodes kind) and am trying to use it as a welder i use salt as my electrolyte (should i use something else???) THE PROBLEM IS THAT WHILE I DO GET A CONSTANT FLAME, I DON'T GET A BIG ENOUGH FLAME (it melts metal but it takes ages to do so) does anyone know of a way how i could get more amps to speed up gas production or of any way i could get more preasure (+maybe my gas isn't pure enough because i use salt as an electrolyte, could that be it?)

Why have neutral plates in an hydroxy generator? Answered

Hi all, I've been wanting to build a simple hydroxy generator for using it as a torch.  I've seen about 500 gazillion tutorials and alot of them talk abour having 3-5 neutral plates between each positive and negative plate. What is the point of this?  Isn't it better to have all plates connected as electrodes? Also, what's the difference between having 5 neutral plates between positive and negative plate, and just having the positive and negative plates installed farther apart (same distance as if you had the neutrals between them)? Thanks!

LED torch lens?

I have this LED torch, a luxeon 'MXDL' (next to a AA battery in the photo). It's a 3 watt LED torch (supposedly) running on a AAA battery connected to a joule thief of some sort (it has some sort of transistor, a capacitor, and an inductor), but it isn't that bright,( being about the same as a 3 5mm LED torch which has these lenses), but I still like it because of its compact size and light output. Anyhow, its throw is kinda poor, and I was wondering whether I could put a cheap lens onto it (from out of, say a camera's lens) to increase throw. Would it work? How would I go about it? P.S: I found these AAA li-ion batteries online, but I didn't even know that those batteries existed. If I put one of them into my torch, they'd probably increase brightness a lot, but because they are only rated at 300mah, I really doubt if it would be worth buying them. What do you think?

Squeeze Torch USB Phone Charger

I purchased a couple of the torches known as Squeeze Torches with the idea of adding a two-way slider switch and a single USB port (I think having to sacrifice one of my USB extension cables for the part?), so either the USB or torch will use the power at any one time. I have a pretty good idea of how things are to be set (although little knowledge on wiring - yet soldering wires is a different matter), but I'm just wondering if anyone before me has performed this build and if so can someone link it so I can have a few helpers. Or if possible, someone make an instructable, because this would be awesome for charging a whole range of devices from iPod's, iPhone's and many phones/devices which include a USB Charging/Data cable. = ) As can be seen from the closeup shots of mine, there is a small but reasonable space to work with.

Hydrogen torch - anyone made or used one? Answered

I am working on my own "hydrogen batteries" to create a lot of hydrogen when I need it as a replacement for those propane/butane canisters when camping or fishing. Got some simple prototypes working for the gas creation but do struggle a bit with converting some orifices (is that eve a word?) and a torch to work with hydrogen. Not to mention the pressure regulation LOL Biggest problem so far seems to be the flame temperature. The gas is produce at up to 50°C and my current burners all start to glow red hot after just a short amount of time. Where they struggle to braze copper with propane the hydrogen is almost overkill ROFL Must be really close to these yellow acetylen bottles the plumber use. So big questions: Do I really need a different orifice hole and if so bigger or smaller than used for propane/butane? Do I really need a acetylene rated torch or can I just ignore the orange red color of mine when using hydrogen? I don't think it will melt but after a while the heat travels down into the handpiece too...
