how do blow torches work

Hi I need help see I have been on the internet for days looking for a diagram, or someone, that could tell me how a blow torch works. Like if there is pressurized air in it, as my friend tells me but he's not a very reliable source. So please if you know such information or have a diagram of it I would be very thankful.

Bacon Plasma-torch!

Wasn't sure where to put this one. It uses food but it's not exactly a food use. It's just awesome on so many levels. The creator, Theo Gray, is a writer for Popular Science. He calls this a "bacon lance".  http://www.popsci.com/bacon   Check out the awesome video via Boing Boing

Plasma Torch

Hello everyone, I am trying to build a plasma torch. What is a plasma torch you might ask? A plasma torch is used in a process call plasma arc gasification. I want to build a small scale working prototype for proof of concept. If anyone could help, it would be great. I can collect different MOTs or NSTs if necessary, just fill me in. Thanks for any input or direction.

Propane torch

I've considered several times buying a propane torch to burn weeds in my driveway, or melt ice. The one I'd like to have looks like a cane with a threaded connector on the handle end to attach a propane bottle. They all seem overpriced to me and I've always wondered if I could make one cheaper than I could buy one. I can find the tubing I need but I've never been able to find the rest of the parts.  Any suggestions or would someone like to post an instructable showing how to make one?

Custom Minecraft Wall Torch

Hello all. This is my first time here so, I hope I can find the info I need. I've never used a soldering iron before and know little about wiring, but I'm eager to learn. I'm looking to customize an electronic Mainecraft wall torch that I have, with a flickering light. However, I wanted to come here first to see if anyone has opened one of these up before. I was planing on using a flickering light from one of those electric candles. I'm not sure if it's as simple as switching out the LED or if I have to rip more parts from the candle. I appreciate any help you can give. Thanks

Pinhole Slide Projector

Hi! I have no idea whether this is the right place to post this topic, but it does say 'burning questions' and that's what this is, so here goes. :-) I've had this idea for a kind of pinhole lense slide projector. The (very basic) diagram is pretty self explanatory, and I was wondering if anyone's tried/heard of anything like this, and whether it could work? Do you think a 100 LED torch would be bright enough? Also, if I'm right in thinking that LEDs don't get hot, there shouldn't be a risk of overheating/fire should there? Thanks! Looking forward to hearing what you think! :-)

i need more amps for my hho generator.......HELPPPPPPP

I've built a hho generator (the spiral electrodes kind) and am trying to use it as a welder i use salt as my electrolyte (should i use something else???) THE PROBLEM IS THAT WHILE I DO GET A CONSTANT FLAME, I DON'T GET A BIG ENOUGH FLAME (it melts metal but it takes ages to do so) does anyone know of a way how i could get more amps to speed up gas production or of any way i could get more preasure (+maybe my gas isn't pure enough because i use salt as an electrolyte, could that be it?)

Lawn Torch with Big Flame That Lasts Awhile

I want to make a big torch that lasts a long time and is inexpensive. Does anybody have any ideas? I was thinking that I could use a coffee can for a container for the fuel and a big piece of cotton for the wick. I saw a pretty neat torch on this website but I don't think that it would last for hours.

Propane or Natural gas Tiki torches

I am interested in making some gas Tiki torches for my back yard like the ones you see in Hawaii. I have looked around and can not find any information on how to build a torch like that. I would buy some, but was rather turned off by the $150.00 each price tag. I would appreciate any info if someone would like to share.

Cactus spine clusters pulled out

Squeeze Torch USB Phone Charger

I purchased a couple of the torches known as Squeeze Torches with the idea of adding a two-way slider switch and a single USB port (I think having to sacrifice one of my USB extension cables for the part?), so either the USB or torch will use the power at any one time. I have a pretty good idea of how things are to be set (although little knowledge on wiring - yet soldering wires is a different matter), but I'm just wondering if anyone before me has performed this build and if so can someone link it so I can have a few helpers. Or if possible, someone make an instructable, because this would be awesome for charging a whole range of devices from iPod's, iPhone's and many phones/devices which include a USB Charging/Data cable. = ) As can be seen from the closeup shots of mine, there is a small but reasonable space to work with.

how could i do this?

I recently bought a mini butane torch. it has a refeulable cartridge, which is just a lighter with out the flint. it makes a mini blue torch flame. is there anyway i could make on with a regular lighter?

Cheap Source Of Propane?

When I got a new can of propane, for my torch, it was $9. At wally world, it was $4. Then, when I went to get a can of cooking stove propane from the camping department (at wal-mart), I notice that the tank was $3. After getting home, I noticed that the threads were exactly the same, and that the torch head would screw onto the neck of the "camp propane" bottle. So, as anyone would do, I fired it up, and it worked! Of course, it would shut off it you tilted it too far, but what the heck! $3 for a can of propane. But then I thought "Why is this so cheap, and why haven't I heard of this before? Is ther something wrong with this? Will I blow myself up?!?!?! Anyway, I'm all for saving $2, or $6 (depending on where I go), so is this actually a reasonable way of saving money? So what I'm asking:-Is this way safe? I haven't fired it up since, in case it did something bad.-Why is it so cheap to but it that way, and so expensive to buy regular tanks?-Has anyone else done this?If anyone can help, it'd be appreciated.

Using an LED to write or draw onto paper?

Last night i went to a bar in brixton after seeing massive attack. In the bar there were frames on the walls with white paper inside and we were given LED torches similar to these LED Torch. When the torch is on you can use it to write or draw onto the frame and it leaves a glowing trail which slowly fades. I really want to know how its done, as it was very entertaining and quite trippy and i want to make one myself. If anyone has any ideas please reply.Cheers

Help with Dynamo types

I have a question for everybody out there. It has been a very long time since I did this type of electrical design work, and for the life of me I can’t remember the principals. I know there are many different ways to generate electricity by using mechanical motion, and converting a motor into a dynamo is very easy. What I am trying to do is to make a brushless dynamo. I have taken my inspiration from a cheap hand cranked torch, and intend to improve on it a lot. In this torch it has a coil which has a flat disk magnet sitting above it. The magnet is spun creating the charge in the coil and is used by the LED's in the torch. What I want to know is how specifically the voltage (potential difference) is created in the coil. My experience of stationary coils is where the magnet is rotated inside the coil. Could someone please explain it to me? Many thanks.

Halogen flashlight mods

Heh...flashlights of death forum.....seems like just the place for this question. I've seen some vids online about using the halogen track light bulbs (mr16? something like that) in maglight mods. Anyone have any exprience in this? A couple of them can be ordered but they are expensive and custom built.....one of them is called a mag85 and there is another called "mac's torch". the guy that made mac's torch (i'm assuming mac) made a video in which he put down a piece of news paper and set it on fire with this light! I believe he was using a special order 100 watt halogen in that one. Now you may see why this question seemed appropriate for the "flashlights of death" part of the forum lol. Nice meeting you all and I'm always tinkering with things to bad I wasn't taking pictures but I will now!

Using lenses to create a beam of normal light??

If you had, say, light from a torch or whatever, directed it through a metal pipe or fiber optic to get it kind of directional, and then into some arrangement of lenses; what kind of maximum range could you expect before it completely lost focus? And would it still obey the inverse square law, or is that just for expanding spheres of light?

Soldering Aluminum to aluminum

I'm building an aluminum bridge for my railroad.  I need to solder the side braces rather than using screws and nuts.  I've ordered a 150 watt chisel soldering iron and need to know what items (solder etc) I need to perform this project.  Any assistance greatly appreciated.  I would rather not use a torch on this project unless absolutely necessary.

flame igniter

Joho! i am making something similar to the "fireslinger" made by tetranite. The big difference is that mine w ill use short jolts of gasoline, that come from a perfume tester, so there will be short big flames, but i need something to ignite the small cloud of gasoline. the problem is, that it cant be a flame, or a torch, because it will be mounted on the wrist. so i will need a reliable ignition source, like a electric shock, the only problem with electricity i use, is that the sparks are too small to ignite everything, so i need bigger sparks, made by anything that will easily spark!

push fit Plumbing Fittings

Shark bite, proline, etc.    They seem to work fine in places that have plenty of room... the sort of places that I'd have no trouble with a solder fitting. But in locations that I almost have to work by braille, places so tight that getting a torch in is nearly impossible, the places that an $8 press fit elbow seems suited for,  in those locations, the press fittings  leak like seives!  Then the release tool wont release the fitting, and it is a huge headache to tear apart. Do they leak if pushed in too far?  if slightly out of alignment?  and if one is in a location where precise alignment isnt gonna happen, Then what to do?

Hello. I just got a newsletter and tried to look at a post from it (The universal multicolour torch (flashlight) ). The page said I wasn't logged in. Most frustrating! Thank you for a wonderful site and I look forward to being able to download this project soon. Sebastian Andrew

Speed Cameras

Personally, I'm on the fence on whether or not these are a good idea in the first place. Should people be speeding in the first place? If yes, why? Having a large speed differential with the rest of the traffic can be quite a dangerous situation.... Why am I on the fence? Because we, in addition to the UK, are already an endemic surveillance society (allong with Russia and China) CITE - it's sad :(]. I'm also anti rfid ID (including the new US passports :/)http://www.engadget.com/2007/12/27/angry-drivers-torching-traffic-cameras-in-england/Apparently, the Luddite tradition of machine breaking is alive and well in its country of origin. According to a report, a group calling itself MAD -- or Motorists Against Detection -- have taken to setting autonomous traffic cameras ablaze across the United Kingdom, and are detailing their exploits on a website (of course). The group's "PR" claims they have been active since 2000, and have destroyed over 1000 roadside cameras. Says the group's leader, Capt. Gatso, "The vigilante anti-speed camera group have announced a summer of MADness which will see them target for destruction all speed cameras in the UK. It's now going to be a period of zero tolerance against all speed cameras." The gang of disgruntled drivers also plans a day of action called "National Cover-Up Your Number Plates Day." Guy Fawkes would be proud. Here's a website for the torched camerasI'm interested to hear the opinion of those of you in the UK... Of course, in addition to everyone else.. Opinions on speed cameras?

My Experiment with a leather handle binding

So the other day i was bored, i got to thinking about dagorhir, it looked so fun, i just needed an awesome suit of armor and a sword. so i tried this, i took 2 strips of leather and tacked them into place, then i wrapped the leather around this dowel. after i got to the end of the stick i made a pommel out of more leather. then i took out the butane torch, i singed the leather so that it curled up at the edges causing a nice grippy feel. so, is this thing full of fail or full of win?

Melting silver to repair jewellery

Hello everyone, Iam a disabled pensioner living in Australia. I have a few pieces of silver jewellery where links have opened, and require "soldering". A jeweller has quoted me $40 each repair. I have a 3 inch square of silver sheet left over from a jewellery course I took years ago, and want my husband to melt it on the links for me. He has tried a hand held soldering iron and also a blow torch, neither worked. Please can someone advise us what else to try ? They are only minor melts required, but we cant make the silver molten in our garage. Many thanks

5 Things I Like About the Blackberry Torch—And a Few I Don't

Is the Blackberry Torch much better than an apple iphone ? No, but right here are the explanations why it is good sufficient for me personally . Research moving amazed us a week back if this delivered a Blackberry Torch review device . Evidently , the organization sent many of them . It appears as though individuals at Edge are greater than a small anxious concerning the marketplace wedding reception for this telephone and it is general probabilities for achievement . I do not fault them. This polarizing item has evaluations which are mostly free of charge yet others which are currently phoning the Blackberry Torch 9800 underwhelming or even worse . Its earlier sales—150K within the very first weekend—are nowhere fast close to Iphone product sales amounts , however they are nevertheless reputable . Last 7 days , I acquired into a disagreement concerning the BlackBerry Torch having a Gizmodo publisher . This person is most likely two decades more youthful than me and may only see the Flashlight with the prism of the Iphone . The technologies now has wrinkles he explained and also the display quality , in the current 800-by-480 globe , is awkward . I would recently been transporting the Flashlight close to for several days , and that i merely could not accept him. I will not dispute the truth that the apple iphone 4 is a superb item . And also the lot of Google android mobile phones , with and with out key boards , are great items . I love the Android By , for example , although I believe it is too large to transport close to on the day time -to- day time foundation . I love the initial Android and Android 2, although I believe Moto continues to have some function to complete on that computer keyboard . The keyboard—really any cell phone keyboard—is, to some extent , in the core of my difference using the Gizmodo publisher . He, like a number of other earlier 20-somethings, is completely comfy with no bodily computer keyboard . I am not . There are lots of individuals during my era much like me and in all likelihood numerous current Edge clients who nevertheless choose Messaging mobile phones . But departing apart the yawning generational variations , I love the Flashlight and that i appreciate utilizing it . Furthermore I not skip my BlackBerry Bold 9000, I'm not going it back again . Here is why: 1) The Internet browser : Indeed , chiefly a credit score towards the Rim Operating system 6, but with no touchscreen and accelerometer, which allows me change from landscape and portrait setting , the knowledge would not be fifty percent of the same quality . It is certainly quicker , deals with practically any type of Site , and it is supported with a display that, whilst not as high definition like a Android or apple iphone , is definitely razor-sharp sufficient for my eye . 2) The House Display : Edge has been doing a pleasant work using the accessible property about the Flashlight display , and that i adore the way the display techniques remaining to correct and down and up . I'm able to reside in the All display , however , just like other configurable cellular systems , I'm able to personalize it too . You will find a number of symbols about the All display , so having the ability to transfer some to Faves is really a encouraged alter . I am also happy the written text information image has become towards the top of their email list . On my small Daring , I frequently skipped texts since the image was crammed nicely beneath digital collapse . Additionally , I love that a few of the essential applications , like Tweets , are actually a fall behind area of the program . 3) The Touchscreen : I did previously personal a Hand Treo and try to valued the mixture of contact and bodily inputting . Given , the old Hand display was limited . The Flashlight , however , isn't . I love will be able to use actions to maneuver with the numerous displays . Adding the touch and move is encouraged , although , I can not picture somebody starting an impression display without them . 4) The Look : The Flashlight is weightier than my Daring , however it seems excellent during my hands . The line is good , although not groundbreaking . There's something really Rim - ant concerning the Torch—and I am good with this . 5) The Laptop Keyboard and Touch pad : Indeed , the laptop keyboard has a smaller footprint along with a little bit much more confined than my Daring , but Edge has because of the secrets somewhat formed sides , so they are simpler to really feel . I'm able to nevertheless perform some inputting with out checking secrets . Basically kind with an apple iphone , I must view my cerebral vascular accidents ( do not detest me simply because I am aged ). Those who have a mature Contour or very first - era Daring will value the track pad . Nevertheless , the main reason it is fascinating about the Flashlight happens because it life correct beneath a complete touchscreen . In the beginning I asked yourself the reason why you would want the track pad using the motion - powered display . Nevertheless , I quickly grew to become skilled at utilizing it for just one really significantly feature—something that's not very easy to complete with an apple iphone : shifting a cursor close to via characters , phrases , and obstructs of textual content . On an apple iphone , I location my hand exactly where I wish to choose and maintain it before the cursor techniques to that particular place . Basically maintain for any 2nd lengthier , my choice resources seem . There isn't any good way to browse via textual content . The Torch's track pad allows me transfer my cursor anyplace I want—in connects and text—and then begin choosing , duplicating , sticking , and so on . It is a delicate distinction but one that is essential for a particular type of person .

Make sure "sponsored content" is identified on mobile app like it is on the site?

A couple times recently I've been scrolling through featured projects on the mobile app (Android) and noticed one that had some suspiciously prominent Mike's Hard Lemonade in it. It wasn't until I checked in a normal web browser that I could confirm that these were sponsored content: https://www.instructables.com/id/Mikes-Marinade/ https://www.instructables.com/id/Tent-stake-marker/ https://www.instructables.com/id/Tiki-Torch-Bottle/ I do appreciate the efforts for transparency on the site and how these are clearly marked as sponsored. It would be nice to get that same transparency on the mobile app - unless I'm missing something, right now there's no way to tell the difference between a regular featured project and a sponsored one.

Cal Lane's steel lace

The photo of this cut-steel lacework make me want to run out to the shop, grab the torch & some scrap steel, and start carving. Cal Lane cuts shovels into lace, oil drums into tapestry, and I-beams into filigreed sculpture with incredible delicacy. From the New York Times article: "The work is about the contrasts between the industrial and the fanciful, the opaque and the transparent. Ms. Lane described herself as "a person who always has opposites in my head."She started her adult life as a hairdresser (her mother owned a salon in Victoria), but she said she was a tomboy and "welding seemed to fit me better." The mix of feminine and masculine vocations (teasing hair and welding steel), she said, is encapsulated in her work."Check out more of Lane's work here and here. Amazing.

Any Sydney-ers here want to share art/craft/tinkering shopping spots?

I'm trying to compile a list of rather disparate resources that can be found in Sydney: hobby shops, art stores, gadget-component stores, etc. I'm looking for places that carry specialized or uncommon items like: Electronics parts (switches, capacitors, etc) Jeweler's size tri-wing screwdriver Loupe Small calipers Glass etching paste Soapstone Pencil torch Low-cost soldering iron (i.e. one that's not meant to be used often) Half-hard sterling wire Carbon fiber rods & others (I'm sure people who are more familiar with different crafts will be able to list tools/materials unique to their area, and I might as well try and collect a broad range of sources.) & Yes, I have looked online.

Remembrance

They shall not grow old as we who are left grow old, Age shall not wither them nor the years condemn; At the going down of the sun and in the morning, We shall remember them. We shall remember them. Laurence Binyon, September 1914 ------------------------------------------------------------------------- In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields.
