I need a gearbox

Hello all; I figure if anybody could help me with this, it would be here. I need a simple gearbox to connect a 8hp horizontal shaft gas engine to a propeller shaft, for installation in an 18ft crabbing skiff. I dont think I need any step down or up gears, just forward, neutral and reverse. Again, simplicity is the key. Any lawn tractor or riding mower I have looked at typically have the geabox/trans incorporated into the rear axle, and I don't want all those belts running around my bare feet. F-N-R transmission from old ford Tranny

Okay I'm making a 2F1R (2 forward 1 rear) trike from and old 550 GSX Susuki. I have seen many builds for electric reverse drives. I want a Mechanical Drive F-N-R gearbox. I have never opened an transmission "YET" but Im about to. I have a Ford AOD Automatic Overdrive out of a F-150. Does anyone know how to get to the Planetary gears? Once I get them out I want to make a metal case to mount between the Engine and Rear Swingarm so that I can use the engine to power the reverse. Here n Georgia there are some very steep driveways and parking spots. I'll need the power from the 550cc engine to back out. Thats noping also I dont just spin the tire off doing it LOL

2003 Tacoma Manual Transmission Problem

I have a 2003 Tacoma 4x4 manual transmission with a shifting problem.  With the clutch depressed it will not go into any gear...if I let up on the clutch, and press/release the brake, it will go into gear.  Other times, when in gear and approaching a stop sign, depressing the clutch will not allow me to slow/stop and it lurches ahead; the same is true when backing up...can't stop.  Either way it is disturbing....any ideas?

Transmission fluid on my cat

Well our van must have a leak or something, because the fur on one of my cat's backs is all spiky, and my dad says it smells like transmission fluid. He must have walked under where it was leaking. My dad says it's not dangerous as long as it doesn't touch his skin, but we're going so have to get it of somehow. Should we cut some of the hair off his back? Try to wash it off?

How can I convert a transmissive to a reflective LCD screen?

Hello everyone, So basically a reflective LCD screen is one that has no backlight, and reflects ambient light off a type of mirror reflector, to allow the image on the LCD to be seen via reflection. An example of a reflective LCD screen is the Gameboy Advance's LCD screen. A transmissive LCD is one that has a backlight that transmits light, but does not reflect light. These are typically 99.99% of the screens out there, such as PC Monitors, Smartphone screens, etc... Now I would like to know how to turn a Transmissive LCD screen, into a Reflective screen, like the GBA screen, without the need for a backlight. The reason I ask this is because I need it for outdoor use (to be sunlight readable), and backlights can't compete with the sun, and having a strong backlight drains battery. I have done a lot of research on this, but can't wrap my head around how the GBA screen works. I have removed the backlight off my computer LCD screen, and added a reflective film beneath the rear polarizer on the LCD screen, but it obviously doesn't make it reflective. I'm obviously missing a crucial step. Is the reflective film in the GBA, 'sandwhiched' somewhere in between the actual LCD screen? Does anyone know how to make a Transmissive LCD computer monitor, into a Gameboy Advance Reflective Screen?

Wireless Power Transmission

Nikola Tesla's grandest vision was the transmission of large amounts of power without wires. His work in this area was abandoned by his contemporaries, and there is still much debate over if it could or could not work. I would like to hear your opinions on this. Do you think it is possible? Would it require only one transmitter, or several, spread across the globe? Would it be safe? Would it be worthwhile? Could Tesla's original spark gap circuit been sufficient to drive it? Or would it be better to use vacuum tubes or solid state setups? Would the operating frequency be very high or very low? Pictured below is how I think Tesla may have done it, based on the information I've seen. It's a bit over-simplified, but to the best of my knowledge, it covers most of what is needed. Please note that, although the transmitter terminals would be at a much higher elevation than pictured, the receiving terminals could stay at a relatively low elevation. Inductive power transmission for electrograf

Hi Guys and Gals,I'm a great fan of both the Electrograf and magnetic fridge lights instructables.Anybody have any idea as to the feasibility of building something similar, but where power was supplied inductively?Something like a large flat coil embedded just below the surface to which the leds are applied, and an AC current driving it? The leds would need careful preparation a la "magnetic fridge lights", but with a more substancial coil.I'm asking as I have no idea how large a voltage/current would be needed in practice in the primary coil to drive the 25mA or so at ~4V for the blue/white leds with what would probably be woeful power transmission.What would be nice is that the coil could be hidden and there be no wear-and-tear on a grid(which can't be varnished etc because it needs to stay electrically conductive).Also placement/orientation of leds could be arbitrary (subject to design of coil).

Will a 49MHz transmission work underwater?

I'm building a small device that needs to go to a depth of only a few feet in swimming pool water (I'd say three feet at the most) working on an arduino. I wanted to make it radio controlled and was planning on using a standard 49Mhz RC car circuit connected to the arduino. I don't want to keep the antenna above the water line and was wondering if a 49 MHz would work underwater.  I know higher frequencies like those in Bluetooth don't work underwater.Preview Topic

I am an electronic engineer in the field of RF directional couplers, but I am puzzled about this question, why to use RF directional couplers in some measurements and control processes ? Today I come to this forum to turn to you to discuss my understandings are appropriate. Here are my personal understandings: RF radio frequency is referred to as RF current, it is a high frequency AC change electromagnetic wave short. Less than 1000 times per second changes in alternating current called low frequency current, more than 10000 times called high frequency current, and radio frequency is such a high frequency current. RF technology in the field of wireless communications with a wide range of irreplaceable role. In the electronics theory, the current flows through the conductor, the conductor will form a magnetic field around; alternating current through the conductor, the conductor will form an alternating electromagnetic field, known as electromagnetic waves. When the electromagnetic wave frequency is lower than 100khz, the electromagnetic wave will be absorbed by the surface, can not form an effective transmission, but the electromagnetic wave frequency is higher than 100khz, the electromagnetic wave can be spread in the air, and the outer edge of the ionospheric reflection, the formation of long-distance transmission capacity (Analog or digital) with high-frequency current modulation (amplitude modulation or FM), the formation of radio frequency signals, through the antenna to launch into the air, the radio frequency of the high-frequency electromagnetic waves.  Long-range radio frequency signal received after the anti-modulation, reduced to the electrical information source, this process is called wireless transmission. Wireless transmission developed for nearly two hundred years, forming a large number of users and product groups, but because of climate change and the impact of surface obstacles, can not transmit the perfect information. Modern human invention of the cheap high-frequency transmission cable (radio frequency line), in order to pursue the perfect quality of information transmission, taking into account the original wireless devices, wireless cable transmission began to pop. Resulting in the concept of radio frequency transmission. Sonic data transmission?

This is just an idle thought, but I was reading a couple of ROV builds, and the one thing they all have in common is a tether - it's a fact of the world that very little in the way of radio signal can penetrate water. So... Could you send control signals to an ROV via sound or ultrasound?  Could beeps and clicks carry enough data, far enough, and clearly enough, to control an ROV? Even more fun, how much data could come back? Sensor readings? Images? Just throwing it out there for you to toy with, but it would be fun to have genuinely-remote control for this class of robot.

Radio frequency program for computer

I am trying to modify an old am fm radio, so that it can pick up transmissions from a walkie talkie. I know the frequency at which the walkie talkie operates, but I can not tell the frequency of the radio when I am adjusting it. Is there any computer program, or something that can tell me what frequency I have?

Basic RF control transmission

My goal is to press a button on my transmitter side and have the receiver flip a relay - that's all.  It's probably the simplest possible use of RF technology...  and it's almost impossible to work out on google.  I am trying to transmit and receive just a simple control signal about a range of 300m, so dismantling 27Mhz toy cars is not an option.   Has anyone successfully made a simple RF circuit before? I can buy a 433Mhz transmitter with this range, but they take FSK or ASK modulated signals.  From what i can tell, there is nothing simpler than the 'OOK' version of ASK modulation for transmitting signals.  If I'm wrong, please correct me.  Otherwise, if I'm stuck with FSK or ASK.  I found one site (bottom of PDF: http://www.edn.com/contents/images/101101di.pdf) providing a simple circuit to produce FSK.  I was hoping for something simpler, but if you think this is the easiest way, i'll give it a shot. Can someone guide me towards the correct ICs and circuits to create this project? Thanks in advance for your help

Sequential, multiple output relay circuit?

I am trying to make a sequential relay circuit on 12-14V DC (automotive power). I need a circuit that will toggle up or down four different ouputs each "latching" until triggered to move up or down the series. Only one relay can be on at a time. One momentary switch will control "up" and the other "down" with the positions holding until the next trigger impulse either way. I will be using the circuit to control paddle shifters on a transmission. Thanks in advance! Dave

How to build a wireless lavalier microphone?

I would like to build a wireless lavalier microphone for my DSLR. My camera shoots HD video and has a 3.5 audio in jack. I have a lavalier microphone that takes a 3.5 jack. I would like to find some cheap(ish) transmitters and receivers (preferably light and small) so that I can shoot and get good quality audio. The transmission range need only be 10 feet but more would be great.  Does anyone have any ideas?

Palm Universal Wireless Keyboard disassembly?

I'm toying with the thought of adapting my Palm Universal Wireless Keyboard to work with Bluetooth.  Currently, it sends irDA data at 9600 baud.  This should be decodable using an xmega's usart which has an irDA mode.  One could even bypass the IR emitter, as there are exposed contacts in the base where one can catch the signals prior to irDA transmission (at 1.5V high  / 0.5V low levels). My question is: Does anyone know how to disassemble the keyboard?  I don't see any screws anywhere.

Every one is going "green" these days and I myself am planning on going head on the opposite direction this is what I have, let me know what you think. I am building a GMC 3/4 ton 4wd. my first priority was what motor to use. so I asked around and a family friend said he had a 2 ton grain truck that has been sitting for years and was looking to get rid of it, he said it had a big block in it. so I took it because it was a big block. it is a 366 cubic inch big block tall deck (NOT A BORED OUT 350) I figured if its good enough for a two ton truck its good enough for my 3/4 ton. I also pulled out the transmission and it is the sm 465great transmission, and my dad gave me the transfer case its the np 205 the king of transfer cases. now I need better axels all i have are the factory 12 and 14 bolt. I am sure they will do but I am looking at getting the Rockwell 2 and 1/2 ton planetary gear set. you know the axels in the duce and a halves .I have a predicted fuel mileage of three to five miles to the gallon. but I could challenge anyone to try to out pull me because I have the gearing and the power

Heavy Duty Workbench

Specifications: 60X30 Not attached to any walls Heavy duty (I need to be able to throw a transmission on it and get to work or take out my hammer and do my woodworking stuff and not have holes or any other damage to the work bench) Under $500 I have scoured Instructables and can't seem to find an instructable that suits my needs.  I can get a full metal workbench for $1500, or a metal topped workbench for about $800. I'd like to keep this cheap. I'm all good for scavenging, but I live in the suburbs, so places to scavenge are hard to come by. Regards,  David

What happens to my phone in an RFID blocking wallet?

Greetings! I'm curious about everyone's experience with using RIFD blocking fabric for blocking phone transmissions.  If I put my phone in a pocket like this, will my phone struggle even harder to find a signal and run my battery down quickly? Fun withTransformers

Connect the output of 2 transformers in series...  12v  +  6 v. much as you would connect batteries in series. will it burn out?  will it produce 18 v as one would expect with batteries?......... 18 volts!!  yay!   hasnt burnt out( YET)... i wont leave this unattended. transmission of power is more efficient at high v.     sooooo... if i hook the output of a 10,000 v  neon transformer to 2 thin strands of wire( think magnet wire, or a single strand from stranded cable)   and input this  10,000 v into the secondary of a second identical neon transformer, will i get usable 120 v from the primary?  (attempt to run the second transformer in reverse as a stepdown) Nope... not YET.  Suggestions?

How well will an RC radio signal transmit through an underground tunnel?

I want to take one of those overbuilt monster truck RC cars from WalMart and stick a camera and a bunch of lights on it, then drive it down drainage tunnels to see where they go. Why? I'm nuts, that's why. My question is this: how will being in an underground tunnel effect the RC transmission? In a cement tunnel it seems to me that it would have increased range because the signal would bounce down the tube without getting lost in the air or degraded by other signals, resulting in improved signal range. Is this hypothesis true? I would be thrilled if I could get 100 feet of signal range in a tunnel. Any ideas?

DIffusing LED with water and chemicals?

I've been thinking about the best way to diffuse LED lighting over a large space, something like a wall. Standard way of doing it would be to lightly sandpaper acrylic glass and backlight it, or edgelight. I have been thinking about filling the space between two sheets of acrylic glass with water to diffuse the light but that would need some additives, so on to the question. Q: Is there any chemical that one could mix with water to make the solution more diffuse/milky that helps the transmission of light in the fluid and also helps the diffusion? Since a fluid being backlit would change in temperature there might be some cool things one could do with that, a light panel that changes visual properties over time?

DIY "FEED BACK CLOCK"

Ok, so I'm currently playing with the idea of making a "feedback clock". Except 1 to 12 is now replaced with 12 speakers, and only having one the hand which would have a microphone attached to the end of the arms. For the rotation of the arm, a geared DC motor. The problem I have is in the construction of this mechanism, so any help or thoughts would be welcomed. My original thought is constructing an amplifier with 12 outputs and 1 input. The input being a receiver, transmission coming from from the microphones attached to end of the arms. OR would it be possible to make individual smaller amps for each speaker and split take the signal from the receiver in to each amp? If I was to do a multi-channel out put amp, does anyone know what circuit design I would be looking at?

HAM radio repeater controller arduino

Is there anyone who can help me with a repeater controller, i need a little program which will switch according to input + 3 sec (or something like that) also i want to decode 4 bit paralel data (binary output from a DTMF decoder) and switch outputs accordingly (if correct code is pressed) (thins like identifier, time&date;, last transmitted message) thees functions i will make on separate boards, i just have to trigger them last transmission board needs an input from the arduino when to start, the playback will be done with one of the DTMF-code outputs any advise / code is wildly appreciated :) ps, im very new to arduino and have plenty to learn  kind regards, milan

Can you piggyback RF communications on cellular transmit/receive frequency bands ?

My question is purely hypothetical and there is no immediate plans for any such application. But I was just curious is it possible to make use of the cellular frequency bands (as set out by a country's regulations and by the cellular providers) for some sort of covert type communication other than for voice, data or text types of cellular communications ? Would it be too difficult and complex to develop such an application that uses cellular radio frequencies or could it be done without too much concern for potential interference or the sharing of channels of nearby normal cellular transmissions ? Could such an application be developed without having to cross over many hurdles ? If this covert communications is possible would the cell frequencies used not reach the base stations of the wireless carriers as noise or can a peer to peer communications be possible by passing the base stations ?

I just took a ride in an awesome truck

Here's some photos from the new model from Topeka Electric Motors. It's a 3/4 ton Chevy pickup with a gigantic motor and a boatload of lithium batteries, with an automatic transmission, power steering, power brakes, A/C, etc. The motor on this thing is HUGE...a foot or so in diameter. This is a truck that could tow a cement mixer. They're using it as a work truck to deliver electric motors, pumps, and everything else they work on. I took a ride in it this morning, and it runs smoother than a gas truck. This is the brainchild of a few smart guys at Topeka Electric Motor. These guys are tuning the shift points for an electric motor to get maximum power and efficiency, programming the controller to perfectly match what the motor needs, and basically making a vehicle that beats the pants off anything the big companies with hundreds of engineers have put out.

bluetooth 4 transmitter to headphone latency reduction

Hey everyone! i'm seeking some advice about a system i've been trying to work out - a bluetooth audio headset from a PA system for vocal monitoring during band rehearsals. currently i'm running microphone -> PA -> bluetooth 4.0 AD2P compatible audio transmitter -> powerbeats bluetooth 4.2 headphones the connection is working fine, the only issue is latency between microphone and headphones (approximately half a second), which makes it very difficult to use as a monitor as i require very minimal latency to hear my voice in synchronisation with the rest of the band. a few questions; does bluetooth simply have an unavoidable lag due to data compression? is it possible for me to hack the bluetooth transmitter in some way to increase the rate of compression/transmission? what would you recommend as a cheap substitute in the event that nothing can be done? thanks very in much in advance, Austin

Universal motor projects

Hello, everybody. I took apart a universal motor recently. The motor itself is broken and does not work. However, I would like to know whether I could rewind the copper coils around the silicon steel motor core in order to make a toroidal transformer.  I have heard that motor cores are sometimes grain oriented, which would significantly reduce my transformer performance. This motor is, however, about a decade old. I want to use the existing motor coil as a primary, and then wind thick power transmission line wire as a secondary in order to get a high amperage output. Is this possible? I would also like to know whether there are more interesting projects out there which I could attempt. I have heard of people making generators from motors, for example. However, winding a transformer is my primary goal. I have attached pictures of the motor. Please tell me whether the above mentioned transformer is feasible. Sorry for the picture quality. Stereo Bluetooth Transmitter Transmitter Transmitter Circuit Help

Hey All, I am currently working on a LiPo Battery Adjustable Voltage Battery Pack, that has a headphone amp and bluetooth transmitter built in. I want the user to be able to use any compatible BT Headphones or BT Receiver Dongle. It is for use with metal detectors.  Every time I Google Bluetooth Transmitter Module, I find a bunch. Upon closer inspection, I find they are all receivers (i.e. speaker left out, speaker right out). There are bluetooth dongles that plug into a 3.5mm jack and transmit, but there is a lag in the transmission that I believe stems from the module not being hardwired into the system. A lag in receiving the BEEP means the object is harder to pinpoint, more digging, bigger holes, and frustrated folks. Transparent LCD - Alpha Channel Monitor

I'm working on a project for my MFA, and am trying to figure out how to hack some LCD's. The idea being that I need a screen that will simply display black or transparent, no colors, but it should be able to accept video input of some type. Hacking a tv or iPad seems the most likely route. The remaining image should show the ambient background through the screen with certain areas shaded according to the luminance or darkness of the video input. While I understand that with all of the polarizing filters applied, light transmission is less than 5% in some lcds, I don't know what happens if you remove the polarizing filters? I remember the old 'Tiger' lcd games that were quite transparent and high contrast, but they definitely didn't play any video! If anyone has any experience with LCD's and the polarizing filters, I'd love to hear your input. Alternately, if anyone has ideas on a video capable b&w; display... They all seem to be for medical purposes and are quite expensive! Thanks!

Indoor spacial position system (indoor mini-gps)

Hi all! I'm hoping to work on a little system to allow a device to work out where it is in a room, with some degree of accuracy. I've thought of a few ideas; cameras and tracking points, sonar of some sort, and a few others, but they all have the caveat of requiring direct line-of sight, all the time. My most hopeful idea is that I could create a sort of mini GPS system, thus: A number of radiowave transmitters, perhaps FM, sit in the corners of the room, and transmit the time, or more likely something like 0-9999 in binary, all the time. My device then moves around the room, and works out where it is in the room, based on the number received by each of it's 3(?) radios, and the difference between them. There are a few potential caveats to this approach:   The radio waves may well bounce off the walls, and confuse the receiver.   The assumption is made that there's enough time between transmission of the signal and receiving to notice a difference   Obstacles to the line-of-sight might skew the difference The list is long. I don't suppose anyone has any input on this idea, do they? Graham

I was thinking the other day, wouldn't it be great if there was a "Wireless Power How-to Kit," which would include a how-to guide, a solderable circuit, and all the components necessary to make a wireless power system. This would be for all of the people who would like to explore inductive coupling, but do not know where to start. I think this kit would help a lot of people... What do you think? Simple AM transmitter

I wish to make an extremely small (size and part count) AM transmitter using only a few transistors and passive components. I wish to transmit an audible tone on a set frequency.I am thinking along the lines of a transistor flip-flop circuit oscillator, perhaps routed through another. It really needs to have less that five/six small components. DIP components are too big. Small electrolytic and other capacitors, transistors, and resistors are acceptable. Transmission distance needs to be at least 1/4 of a meter, but further is better. It needs to run on between 1.5 and 6 volts, low to middle'in milli-ampage im thinking watch batteries for a few hours at least. I can work out transistor loop timings and I understand how the Amplitude Modulation system works. Current thoughts/plans (if you can call them that) are an audible tone switching a secondary transistor loop from high (no resistor in series) to low (resistor in series) power and back. The secondry loop will be switching at the target frequency.

Pancake Coil

Hello, I was going to try building an old Tesla "Pancake" Coil, and then write an instructable for it. (please don't steal my idea!) Does anyone have any information or building techniques at all that they can give me to help? The Pancake coil is just a Tesla Coil that has a flat secondary, as well as a flat primary. Tesla used it in his early radio and wireless power transmission research. The primary circuit should be pretty much the same as a conventional Tesla Coil. But I am a bit confused as to how to build the secondary. A few questions I have: What wire gauge should I use (I'm pretty sure that Tesla didn't use magnet wire for this)? How do I determine the space in between the turns? (more to come) I realize that most people don't build these kinds of coils anymore, and therefore most people probably won't be able to answer my questions or give me any info; I'd just thought that I would try and see if any one could. It would help me a lot. Thank you.

BLUETOOTH INTERFACING WITH 8051(AT89C/S51/52) PLZ HELP

But there is no reception or transmission. However the bt module is working fine. An Transmitted RF-powered LED WARNING light?

The Situation: I am a disabled Veteran with too much time to fill.  So, I volunteer at the Sheriff's Office doing light clerical work and a little target shooting, but my first love is HAM radio.  It is a GREAT hobby!  It is not without its hazards, though.  My main transmitting antenna is a ground-mounted vertical in the back yard.  We have six children with four still at home and while my kids know to NEVER touch my antennas due to the danger of electrical shock and nasty RF burns, their friends in the neighborhood may not fully comprehend the hazard. The Challenge (if you choose to accept it): So, what I'd like to do is to have a circuit out on the post supporting the antenna that would light LEDs, (preferably, four), whenever I key the mike - AND - have the entire circuit use the power from my own transmission... no power supply or batteries!   It would also simply be a cool thing to have! The Specs: This is a vertical for the HF bands, from 7MHz to 30MHz and I typically transmit at 100 watts.  The circuit would be at a distance of no more than six inches from the active element.  I have seen crystal radio circuits in the past that used received RF to power a LED but don't remember where.

DIY Plug-In Hybrid Pickup Truck

Hi everyone, For a while, I've had this as my "back-burner" project. I'm trying to really get going on it now. It's an Open Source, DIY, Plug-in Diesel/Electric Hybrid Pickup truck. That's really a mouthful, so I'm just calling it the "SuperTruck" project, until I can come up with a better name. The entire concept is that it is a parallel hybrid, which you can charge from the wall, and it has a diesel engine that can run on diesel, bio-diesel, and possibly veggie oil. Either the engine OR forklift motor will be able to propel the vehicle. (Meaning that it will have a dedicated EV mode.) The driver can manually decide to run it on diesel, electric, or both depending on the driving situation. The mechanicals are relatively simple. It uses a manual transmission (rather than a CVT or planetary gearing.) In theory, this will be a project than any advanced grease monkey will be able to duplicate. I'm not much of a car guy, but I have learned quite a bit working on my electric motorcycle, electric car, and experimenting with running my car as a hybrid. High Frequency Alternators

Look at a picture of some arcs from a common spark-gap Tesla Coil, and then compare it to the arcs from a solid-state. What makes the two so different? The difference comes from the Solid-State Tesla Coil to operate in CW (constant wave) mode. This means that its power supply is uninterrupted, whereas in a spark-gap type, power is being switched on and off hundreds of times per second. If the output terminal of a CW coil doesn't have a brake out point, no corona or spark will occur. For anyone who's investigating wireless power transmission or Tesla's version of radio, this is a very helpful feature, since corona only wastes energy. And if it does have a brake out point, it can create some pretty interesting spark displays, as I mentioned above. An arc to a grounded object increases the current in the arc to such a point that it turns into a white-hot "flaming" discharge. All-in-all, a CW type coil is a pretty interesting kind to observe. But solid-states can be pretty difficult and annoying to build, and expensive as well. Since solid-state technology obviously was not available to Tesla, he found a different way to operate his coils in CW mode- a generator that was specially designed to produce radio-frequency power. He had originally created it for high-frequency arc lighting. Today, I have seen absolutely no coils run by a high frequency alternator. Of course, an alternator would be admittedly difficult to build, but since it could probably deliver more power than a solid-state coil, it would be worth it. Does anyone know if there are any companies that still make these alternators? Would anyone be interested in recreating it? Should we even bother? Thank you for listening. Peace!

A concept known as a space elevator has been "doing the rounds" as a cheap way into orbital space for several decades now.Basically, a cable of some description is anchored to an orbiting mass, and vehicles climb up and down the cable to transport materials and passengers to and from orbital space cheaply and easily (in any space journey, the most expensive and dangerous parts of the journey are the first and last few kilometres).There are, technologically speaking, two main hurdles - the cable, and the vehicles.Carbon nanotube composites are a strong contender for the cable, but travelling up and down the cable takes power. Rockets are out of the question (what would be the point of the cable?). The hours, possibly days, of the journey make batteries unfeasible, and the turbulence of the atmosphere precludes the use of PV panels large enough to power the vehicles from daylight.That leaves transmitted power.So far, the transmission ideas have been electromagnetic - lasers aimed at smaller PV panels on the underside of the vehicles, or microwaves aimed at receiver dishes.Now, a new proposal suggests transmitting the energy mechanically.European Space Agency ground station engineer Dr Riise ... proposed sending power mechanically - effectively by providing a carefully timed jerk of the cable at its base.To demonstrate, he employed a broomstick to represent the cable held in tension, and an electric sander to provide a rhythmic vibration to the bottom of the stick.Around the broomstick's circumference he tied three brushes representing the climber with their bristles pointing downwards - meaning it took slightly more force to lower the brush assembly than to raise it.The vibration from the sander allowed the assembly to slide upward along the broomstick as it moved slightly downward, but grip it as it moved slightly upward. The net effect: the assembly rose against gravity straight to the top of the stick. That's a bristlebot (or vibrobot)! Dr Riise, though, calls it a longitudinal wave climber or LWC.It sounds easy enough to replicate the demonstration model, although I can't imagine how you would efficiently vibrate a 36,000km cable (I have images of damaging harmonics getting set up as the moving carriages change the effective length of the vibrating part of the cable, and shaking important bits off the vehicles).Apparently, though, the idea is being looked at by lift manufacturers for installation in the next generation of super skyscrapers.Demonstration videoBBC story

The Star Trek Home

There's the technology today to produce most of the comedies seen in star trek, not just the original series. I'm talking the TNG or DS9. The automatic sliding doors are seen in almost every supermarket. You would install them with steel or aluminum doors with the design seen on the shows. Come badges could be produced. The only problem would be wearing a cellphone sized device somewhere on your body. The hypo spray could be developed with our technology, we use syringes more often. The technology in hyposprays was used in mass vachination machines. I'm sure it could be miniaturized. Isolinear chips compare to memory sicks or SD cards of today. One could install touchscreen monitors throughout one's house linked to a central computer. Microphones and speaker hidden throughout the house could provide the voice access like seen in star trek. Al though you might want to upgrade their authorization code method. It's horribly insecure. A PADD could be a tablet pc or kindle. It uses induction charging, something that could be incorporated or built in using today's technology. The "laptop" used in readyrooms could be a laptop. The facebook video message system shows how the star trek messages could be transferred. Skype could be used as transmissions. A giant monitor could serve as a view screen. A replicator is hard to do with today's technology, but we have machines that can produce drinks. We don't have phasers, but current day guns are as good as them in stopping power, and they can't be damped by damping fields. Torpedoes in Star Trek  are just like air to air missiles in the sky or normal torpedoes in the sea. Jefferies tubes could be installed in one's home if you wanted it to.  Next are somethings that aren't as good as the ones in star trek. Our medical technology isn't as advanced. Tricorders could be iphones modified a bit with radar and other technology. They wouldn't be the same quality as the ones in star trek.  A holodeck could be simulated with virtual reality machines, movie theater, video games, and a 3-d holographic projector. They would be most of the uses a holodeck is used for. There are somethings we don't have that is seen frequently in star trek. Transporters and Warp Drive are chief among them. In some ways though, we have surpassed the technology seen in star trek. Touchscreens are a prime example. Instead of the unchangeable interfaces we see in the bridge, we could put touch screens in all of the consoles.
