sawing 1 1/4" EMT?

Hi everyone, I have found a local store close to my home that will sell me electrical metal tubing, but they will not cut it (they only sell it in 10'-long tubes). They have told me that they have a hacksaw in the back I can use to do it myself, but since I am just kid I thought they might be kidding me. Is it feasible to cut 1 1/4" electric metal tubing with a hack saw? The tubing looks pretty thick to me and I would need to make three different cuts. Thank you for any advice, James

Find/make frosted glass/plastic tubing

I'm building an audio vu meter, and thought the LEDs would look nice enclosed in some frosted tubing, but I'm having trouble finding any. Something like a fluorescent tube would be perfect, but the coating on the inside of them rubs off fairly easily (is it phosphorous based?), and cutting these things open isn't usually recommended (they have small quantities of mercury in, I believe). It's easy enough to find perspex tubing on ebay, but it's all clear - I really want something translucent, so that the LEDs give a glow of light, rather than a point. Is there something I can coat glass or perspex with to create this effect? Or am I searching for the wrong words? I sometimes see the fluorescent tubes referred to having a satin finish, but that hasn't helped

Using Radiant Alumipex for Solar Pool Heater

Hello everyone, First time here, found lots of info but have question about using this type of piping. I've noticed most people use either black hose or irrigation pipe. I have extra black radiant heat hose and was thinking it would be much better. Its black hose shell with a thin aluminum shielding then thick white pipe inside. It says rated for 200F - 100psi and is 1/2 thick. Brand name caked Weil-Mclain Alumipex for Radiant 1/2nom 1216 PEX-AL-PEX. Can someone please let me know if this would work. Thanks. Brian

Making water cooled shoes need some advice about thin copper tube fittings.

Essentially i want to make water cooled shoes from some of the spares i have from my old pc water-cooling set up.  I want to run some thin copper tubing around the shoe which will connect to the some metal fittings that will then connect to my rubber tubing and then to the pump and the radiator. Now i know about the fittings that are available for the regular copper tubing that runs in houses but this tubing will be around 4mm and im not sure how to connect this tubing to my metal fittings which are about 3/8th of an inch i believe.  I was thinking to just use some epoxy putty or something but im sure there are better ways to do this. so any ideas?  im sure fittings are available but i dont know what they're called i couldn't get anything with a quick google search.  Edit: i didn't realise response here would be so thoughtful and all. I dont want to be able to walk around in these i just want to sit in my room and be comfortable. The heat difference probably wouldn't be too large between my feet and the air for a huge transfer so i also had thought to add a small water bath with a second small radiator init.  The copper tubing doesnt have to be directly under my feet i realise they'd probably be crushed otherwise. but the heat conduction through them must be so much better then the plastic tubing.

How To Make A Hole In Airline Tubing?

I'm trying to make a hole about a millimeter in diameter in the side of a piece of standard airline tubing.  I've tried poking a heated needle through the side, but the hole was too small and the heat warped the plastic.  How should I do this without destroying the tubing?

Paint Plastic To Copper Tubing

I'm making a prop that requires a length of coiled copper tubing & I don't have the cash to buy it. I need a plastic tube that is malleable into a coil & I can spray paint it a copper color. I've experimented with some types of plastic cover electric cord & aquarium tubing & both, the plastic reacted with the paint & never dried.  I need to know what types of plastic tube I can ether paint myself & wont melt the plastic, or point me in the detection of were I can find copper colored plastic tubing, or name the types of plastic tube that wont react to certain types of paint.

Where to buy 6mm brass or stainless steel tubing?

Does anyone know where to buy good lengths of 6mm ID stainless steel or brass tubing?  When I say good length I mean like around 4 feet continuous.  And the tolerance must be very good, in the degree of 0.01mm I've been searching for a while, but getting metric tubing in the US in lengths of anything more than 10 inches or 300cm is hard.  The closest I've found was 6.22mm (which is really 0.2425 inch or something like that), but Ideally I want the ID to be between 6.00 and 6.08 mm and in case if anyone is wondering, I'm building an airsoft sniper, which uses 6mm BB's

teflon ( ptfe ) tape melting how to

Hello, I am looking for a viable way to melt some teflon tape so to form a sort of spiraled tube . I am thinking of wrapping it around a steel tube and heating the tube up to 600 °F  or such . How should I heat the steel tube so to melt the teflon not  permanently bonding it (teflon) to the tube surface ?

Tube amplifier schematic

Does anyone have a schematic for a stereo tube amplifier, I just acquired a large quantity of tubes, a tube tester and some other assorted electronics from my grandfather. Ive always wanted to make a nice tube amp, now all i need is direction. It will be another 2 weeks or so before I can actually pick them up and start testing them so I was just trying to find some schematics to get me in the right direction. I figure this may even make a nice first instructable as long as im not completely lost in the schematic. Thanks smoke

Telescope with 3 tubes

Hello all, I wish to make a telescope with a long (1 metre) cardboard tube I got with a potrait I bought a few days ago. I already have 3 smaller tubes - 2 from silver foil rolls (which are very thin in diameter - about an inch), and another from a soldering iron (which goes inside the big tube easily). Is it possible that I make a telescope using three tubes (one sliding inside the other) and three lenses? If yes, how and what lenses I need to use? Regards

Valve/Tube Amps

Hi, I am currently designing a stereo/mp3 amp for my education and I was wondering... Is it possible to incorporate a Valve/tube into a conventional stereo circuit? (like a standard valve amp but smaller and without the Equalization effects) I suppose the Valve/tube watts would have to match the speakers, but is this possible or would I have to use a circuit from a guitar amp that is already paired with a valve/tube amp system?! Much appreciated. -Rob

"Organ donors"... or: sources for tube project parts...

The "Vacuum Tube" group needs a first forum topic. Here it is... Sorry 'bout the pun... but I could have used Time to get Organized... Be thankful ;-)Vacuum tubes and parts tend to be rather expensive these days. But there's a good source for parts, and it's often free: old tube organs.I picked up a working 1960 Wurlitzer a couple days ago. It's got:-- full complement of tubes (the mother lode!), including9 (nine!) 12AX7 preamp tubes.2 6L6-GC power tubes1 5U4-GB rectifier(there were other tubes: (28!) 12fq8's but they're not so useful for audio...)-- Huge power transformer-- Large (20-25 watt) output tranformer-- two 16 ohm speakers-- lots of carbon-comp resistors, sockets and other reusables.Total cost--just gas, and a sore back.Even the non-tube organs are a good source of speakers, reverb tanks, pedals, etc. The tank, bass pedals and the volume pedal were from a solid-state Conn organ left on the curb...The bass pedals could be made into a MIDI project, and the volume pedal would be a nice start of a wah, or left as-is. Yeah, they are grungy, but that's easy to fix....

Where to buy large glass tubes?

I need several glass tubes (10-20) that are around 30-40mm in diameter and 6 feet long. They also can't be rediculously expensive, I've been searching for a while, but all I've been able to find is glass with a length of 4 feet and a diameter of like 10mm. Any help?

Vacuum Tube Night Light

Hello All, I have four 12AX7A vacuum tubes out of an old guitar amp.  I'm not sure whether they work or not-the sound was extremely poor, but this could have been due to any number of things wrong with the amp, which is gone now.  I saved the tubes, as they still lit up when powered on.  I would like to turn the tubes into some kind of low glow night light/art project, but am not quite sure how to go about wiring them in parallel with one another, or even the correct voltage.  I have no experience with tubes, but would love to start learning, even just the how to power them up.  How complex a circuit would it take to do this?  Thanks!

What to do with old vacuum tubes?

I recently found a really old tv in a crawlspace at work and I brought it home and salvaged 13 vacuum tubes out of it. I figured I could make some sort of cool project out of them like maybe a mad scientist lamp with LEDs or something. But before I actually start using them I wanted to brainstorm some more ideas of possible projects. So if anybody has any good ideas of cool things to do with vacuum tubes, let me know. Also, just out of a nerdy curiosity I was wondering what exactly vacuum tubes are designed to do, does anyone know?

Rubens tube help!

Hey everybody, Ok so me and my friend built a rubens tube for our science project and fired ot up today. It was awesome! But, we have one problem. the flames keep getting blown out or are dying and we dont know why. Our tube is about 4 or 5 feet long and has holes every half inch (1/16th drill bit). we used latex sheets on both ends. the propane is a camping tank (small) and feeds the rubens tube through 2x 1/4 inch feeds spaced evenly apart. It may just be that we need to let the tube pressurize more. Our tube is 4 inches in diameter and is about 5 feet long. We let it pressurize for about 5 minutes. I think maybe somewhere along the lines of 7 minutes might do the trick, because when we went to light it, the initial flame height was very short. Has anyone else used the same setup we have?

Soldering copper question.

I'm working on a project that requires soldering a 1/4" OD copper tube into a hole drilled in the side of a 2" copper pipe. Will a soldered join (not brazed) be sturdy or do I need to do something to reinforce (cut threads into the tube and pipe, flare the tube and insert from inside, etc) it? There won't be a lot of stress on the join but there will be a small tap on the tube to there may be a bit of torsion now and again. Thanks for your responses!

Tube Material

I started thinking about how the tube material could be improved. Although I love the ghetto look of pringles wrapped in the invincible duct tape, improvements can be made. You could use PVC or ABS for the tube, it wouldnt need pressure rating because Im sure this thing wouldnt have enough power to explode the pringles/tape team. This is rather cheap and you could just glue on an endcap. Then a BBQ ignitor can be threaded in, a ring to define the chamber and barrel and fuel sprayed in! However getting the perfect cost/durability/strength ratio is hard.
