How to be a Student - Input Desired :)

Hallo Everyone Looking to make my first Instructable, and I thought I'd do a collection of useful things on how to be a successful student, aimed at first-years in British Universities. My aim is maybe to publish some of these in our Uni's magazine eventually. So in the name of writing a quality Instructable I thought I'd ask for any hints you guys might have for everything to do with Uni: work, lifestyle, finances, anything you can think of. Thanks for your help guys! Mister Tumbles

I'ma gettin' me Eddikated!

I'm headed off to college in the morning, on my way toward a degree in aerospace engineering. If that and the logo don't tell you where I'm headed, you don't get to know. I'll still have my computer and Interwebz access, but I don't know if I'll be around less because I'm busy with schoolwork or more because I'm not doing household chores. I do have a single room and a 30-pound suitcase full of tools, so I am planning to continue to Make things, just not things that can be heard from outside my room. If anyone here is going to the same university (note the logo), let me know. I only know three other people there and one of them I want to punch every time I see her, so I could use more acquaintances.

I know I'm not alone.

I saw someone with an instructables t-shirt in the halls at school today. Who goes to UOIT? :p For everyone else: What school do you go to? (College, Uni) Or are you still in high school? Finished education or just not doing anything?

D Day Fast Approaching

Yup, this weekend marks the deadline where kids pay their deposit to commit to the college that they will attend in the fall. It's a major landmark decision for all and I wish the best of luck to those part of the Class of 2020.  Hopefully all were able to make an informed decision of their choice and will be happy wherever they go. So here are some random thoughts on the process: Applying for college is way different now then from I went through it - Why did all of you do applications for more than 10 colleges? (Is it more trying to game the system for admissions, although colleges game it for their stats rankings, and raking up fees by those testing services/prep courses/financial aid forms) Many are emotionally unprepared for the rejection that comes along with it. Many are emotionally unprepared for the realization that most colleges are super expensive and may not be affordable even if you are accepted. It may appear senseless in who gets in and further who gets merit scholarships or full ride to some places. There is an air of mass hysteria during that wait period for the admission decisions to come out. Certain college forums out there seem to feed on that. Don't chance it. Hard to say what is worse, filling out the CSS Profile financial aid forms or going through a TSA checkpoint on a bad day. Gotta love the financial aid letters stating the school is pleased to offer you a sizeable loan to send your kid to college. I have to say we have been fortunate to be able to make our final decision a few weeks ago. I am also fortunate to have won many instructables contests with t-shirts as prizes. That will be her wardrobe for the next 4 or 5 years.

Which engineering discipline is most worthwhile to major in? (mechatronics and nano included) Answered

I am a student from Canada and I enjoy math physics and logic in general, some programs have a specialized 1st year so I'm wondering which discipline would be most useful in terms of enjoyment career options and pay.  So far I'm leaning towards Mechatronics at Waterloo and Mechanical at UBC and Queens (for those of you familiar with Canadian Universities)

Hey Ibles! Help me choose what to study!

There comes a time in every Keith's  life where he must stop being a Keith-Kid and become a Keith-Man. Yes, soon I shall end my highschool life and embark on the journey to adulthood. Problem is...I...kinda have no idea what to study. The only thing I can really say I enjoy doin is....well...i dunno. I'm kiiinda good with computers....and ...well I guess my talents fall into the Art category. I enjoy drawing, (even though I havent drawn in over a year...that might be an obstacle...) I could maybe envision myself being a graphic artist, I dont know I could picture myself animating a commercial or stuff...I don't really know how it all works... I have some experience in video and photo editing. No programing experience, aside from knowing the definition of HTML (no points for that? come on...) So...basically.... Can you guys suggest what I should study? Also, over here in my tiny little island, there isn't much for Graphic Design....Theres ONE school, but i dunno all I see there are emo peoples and...i dunno...I cant say I like it very much.. SO YEA! Suggestions! Help a Keith out will ya? T_T

College Hunting!

Hello, my dear Instructablonians! Life has been busy, and I haven't been on here in AGES! I'm sure many of you have no idea who I am, and those of you who do know are either dead or are too afraid to admit they know me. But no matter! Let's continue! In case you didn't know, I'll be graduating from high school next year! Yippee! That means I get to go to college! Yippee! But first I have to find a nice college so I will be happy and learn very goodly. My dilemma is this: with 4000 colleges in the US of Awesome, there's really just too many apples in the basket, so it's hard to tell which is ripest (or, only a slightly cynical yet perhaps more accurate note, the least bruised). So, my fellow Ibl'ers, this is why I've come to you: to ask you for opinions on good colleges! Why you? Why, because I know we are similar! Instructables is full of inventors and makers and engineers! That's what I want to be when I grow up :-) Also, many of you are either getting ready for college yourselves, or already in college, or have already finished college altogether! Perfect candidates, you see? Anyways, just tell me about good schools you know of. Some of my criteria: * I'm looking for 4 year institutions * I don't wanna leave the US - too far from the nest, you see? * I'm interested primarily in engineering (mechanical, aerospace, computer) and architecture (houses, not skyscrapers, in case you were wondering :-) * Private or public - I don't really care Assume that anything I didn't mention doesn't matter to me (oh, before I forget, I'm a guy, so no girls' schools, unfortunately). Also, feel free to discuss other colleges too! Good luck to anyone looking for a college, and TIA for anyone who helps out :D

Unique Way to Get Around A University Campus

Hey there Instructables Community! I've used this site for years and years for everything from building my computer, making a crossbow, to feeding myself even this day at my University. Now speaking of which, the University of South Florida has a wonderful landscape. Plenty of paved walkways, foliage, and mild inclines here and there. The top 3 most common methods of getting about seem to be Walking, Longboards, and Biking. Now my question is: What sort of unique device or contraption could I fabricate for getting around campus?  I've come across custom decks for skateboards and recumbent bikes, but they just don't really give me that creative spark to make it. I want something unique and practical, let's not forget there are a few good slopes here and there I have to overcome. I'm a very fit individual so stamina won't be a hindrance in what I'll be willing to make, although funds are tight. It also has to be something I can either lock up at a bike rack, or carry into class and place it along a wall or carry it up stairs if I can't lock it up outside. Thanks for any advice, suggestions, tips, and such! P.S. Although it may be a bit off topic from the Rides sub-forum, here's my latest creation thank to Instructables! http://tinypic.com/r/217bqa/5

Do elective courses matter in universities? Answered

I am going to university this fall and my major is economics. I have a lot of options for elective courses for the first year, like geography, math and psychology. I wonder does it really matter what elective course I take in university? Will companies focus on elective courses when they interview people? Or they only look at your major?

universe expanding forever?

I saw this article on the BBC news site: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-11030889 which has some astronomers apparently claiming that they have now worked out the fate of the universe from measurements on distant stars magnified through a galactic cluster. The final quote is: Professor Priyamvada Natarajan of Yale University, a leading cosmologist and co-author of this study, said that the findings finally proved "exactly what the fate of the Universe will be". This seems like a pretty bold claim to me - I was thinking that even if we had a lot of such measurements then we would still only be working out the geometry of space/time in the region of our universe that we are capable of seeing. This is likely to be only a small part of the whole universe due to the galactic horizon imposed by the age of the universe against the speed of light. Also, even assuming that the whole universe of 3D space and time that we live in behaved the way they are saying, this is still only working out what would happen due to the universe's own internal dynamics - there are ideas coming out now about our universe being part of a wider multiverse outside the realm that we experience as normal space and time, so even if the universe did expand into a "cold dead wasteland", then something could possibly infringe upon it from outside space/time and make something different happen at any time in the future. Some of what's going on here is just bad journalism - there's a longer article here: http://pda.physorg.com/darkenergy-universe-magnifyinglens_news201427857.html which gives a fuller version of the same quote: "The geometry, the content and the fate of the Universe are all intricately linked," says Natarajan. "If you know two, you can deduce the third. We already have a pretty good knowledge of the Universe's mass-energy content, so if we can get a handle on its geometry then we will be able to work out exactly what the fate of the Universe will be." This is a bit more cautious but there's still this idea that by making measurements like this from just one point in space and time we can work out the fate of the whole universe, which I don't really believe. So I reckon these sort of predictions should be taken with a massive pinch of salt, rather than definite statements of what we know. Which may be obvious, but I wanted to say it and see what anyone else thinks?

What does the universe look like?

I watch these magnificent programs about the universe, so wonderfully explained by Morgan Freeman.  I am puzzled with one question.  How can the science predict the size of our galaxy in somewhat vivid details?  So, here is my analogy.  With the space technology at hand, taking a picture of our own galaxy is the same as taking a picture of the Empire State building from one of its balconies.  Can someone please elaborate on this subject. Thank you.

Design Your Own Electronics Kits

If you teach electronics to groups, finding all the parts you need can be a drag. Organizing those parts once you receive them? Even draggier. Asking students to buy the materials? The draggiest. It looks like Jameco is making it a little bit easier to source and organize educational kits. Just browse their site, add kit components to your cart, provide some basic info about your school, and either you or your students can purchase the kits from the Jameco site. They'll even include the course number and an educational discount for you or your students. Here's the text from the announcement: While we've always offered educational discounts, we're excited to announce a new program to allow you to design your own electronic kit. Whether you want to create your own grab bag of components or design a step-by-step project, Jameco will source it, build it and sell it offering students an educational discount and educators a royalty on every kit sold. Oh yeah. And they'll provide some royalties. Probably not enough to pay off your new 'vette, but it's better than nothing. Check out this super-informative link for all the info. This is in no way an advertisement for Jameco, but this program might be useful for teachers, professors, scout leaders, after school programs, hackerspaces, or any other place where a group of people would learn electronics.
