Using used capacitors? Answered

I have a Bose amp to fix (car), which in this case means changing out the electrolytic capacitors, as bose used a bunch of not quite sealed ones way back when. So the question is: can I just use the ones I can salvage from all the various boards I've collected, or do they need to be the same brand/grade whatever? I know about polarity and rating (i can reed!?) and can solder/desolder pretty well. I know that there may be other prob's, though the capacitor issue was well known & documented on the web. Thanks to all who help out.

Useful tools

Cheap, cordless drills are amazing tools. Take one apart and attach a speed controller, you got a motor for a robot. Also, they have good high torque motors that can be used for all sorts of things. A $50 RC transmitter and a receiver make good remote uses, such as remote detonation. More useful tools are pneumatic cannons. I've used them from pressure testing to damage testing. WHat are your useful, unconventional tools?

Moving to the US? Answered

Hey there.  After I have *hopefully* gone to uni and came out the other side with a degree I am considering moving out to the USA, probably to or at least to somewhere near San Diego. Nothing is set in stone for now so any suggestions on other places would also be helpful. But my main problem is that I have started to grow some plants back in Britain and don't particularly like the thought of just leaving them, so what are the laws on bringing plants with me? I know they are just plants but it's all the time I've put into them and to be honest, they're the first few plants I haven't killed. Any tips or stories of emigrating to the US would be great. As I said, this is just a thought, but I need to know more about how to go about moving there and what happens before I can truly decide. Thanks for your help :) Tom

Moving to the US? Answered

Hey everyone. I'm rather young, but I'm trying to plan myself a future. I've though about being a programmer(I'm VERY good with both software and hardware, better than anyone else I know at my age) but I've decided wasting my entire life sitting in front of a monitor isn't for me. I want something more active, something that won't get be bored. I'm into parkour recently, and I've always loved martial arts and knives. I thought if it's possible for me to develop a military career. I live in Israel but I really hate this place(the law is very tight and sensitive about whatever can cause harm. Knives are illegal to carry, even tear gas and pepper spray draw police attention) so I want to move to the US. My English is very good, but I heard it's hard to get there. Other than that I though about developing a military career at the US army. I might change my mind, but I just wanna know how much of my plan is possible for now. Once I turn 18 I have to serve at the military for 3 years, then once I'm 21 I wanna move to the US. Once I get there I wanna sign up to the army immediately. I'm not even sure I need a house as the army provides all I need, so I can basically live there. I would like to serve at rather high-risk force(snipers, green berets, etc) for as long as I can and then still work for the army at a more passive job, such as engineering, or research and development. I know it might sound weird and stuff, but I really wanna be a soldier. Please tell me if my plan is possible, comment or correct it. Thanks, Mike.

Image use from sites such as Pixabay, for example? Answered

I have seen many folks ask similar questions, but I wanted to be absolutely sure about this before starting my first instructable. Can you use images from sites such as Pixabay? For those of you who are unfamiliar, Pixabay is a great site to pick up photos that are free for commercial use with no attribution required. I imagine this is 100% okay, but I wanted quick confirmation just to be sure. Thanks in advance for your response!

These numbers are just crazy!

I was looking at one of many websites I go to daily and found this really cool picture. It (the first picture) is of 8,000 42-gallon oil barrels. Which is the amount of oil consumed in the United States every two minutes. Crazy, huh?The second picture is the first one zoomed to see the detail at actual print size. There are more things like this here, and you will be amazed at just how much we use in such a small amount of time. Well it isn't just stuff we use, but most of it is.I never would have thought the United States would use 2 million plastic bottles every five minutes.

Recycling Soda Bottles Experiments

Test 1: heat gun, "high setting"  Plastic Coke bottle SOFTENS + shrinks                                                                  -  at about 250F * Test 2: Heat gun " low setting** " Plastic coke bottle MELTS enough to  make gooey threads , and bubbles   -   at 450 to 500 F *according to a cheapy harborfreight laser thermometer. Not sure just how accurate it is in the 250  to 500F range. This device seems to read 5 degrees high at the 100F range. ** ironically, the temp is higher on the "low" setting. When the fan is moving less air, that air is hotter. One of the tricks, I imagine, might be to fully melt the plastic without burning it.   Suggestions welcome. Further results will follow.

PFC for home use

I'm thinking about using PFCs (power factor correction capacitors) for my whole house. Has anyone here done it? I currently use PFCs on my neon sign transformer (an d it works), but I have a question. Why wouldn't one capacitor effect my whole house? or does it and it's just because it's a tiny cap (only about 20uF) that the results are negilagble? Also, what stops it from just affecting my house to the whole power grid? thankyou EDIT: I just read somewhere that the power company for residential homes charges the same whether you use PFCs or not, they just somehow mesure the real power... Is that true?

Does Electrical Tape Have A Use?

Hello, I was wondering if black electrical tape actually had a use? I ask because it doesn't seem to really stick to anything for very long. It eventually becomes un-done from what it was wrapped around and then leaves a sticky residue behind. Am I not using it properly or not using it the way it was intended? Does anybody else have this problem? (I have the same problem with that Saran clear plastic wrap stuff, it doesn't stick to anything but itself. So, it could be user error.) Thanks J

Re-Use, Individual Cells from 18V NiCad

Seems that with a bit of randomnity in mfging, some cells in an 18V battery might fail before others. With that in mind, I'm trying to re-use individual cells after a pack craps out.  Test 1  Battery pack from a "drill master" which I got for  ~$2 at a thrift store. Google informs that this is a harborfreight tool, so expectations are low.  Upon disassembly of the pack, 1 of the spot-weld connections between cells had broken.  Since I don't currently have a 1.5v source, I'm using a 3v  source to charge 2 cells in series. Only charging for a few minutes at a time. Currently, this 2 cell set will light a couple xmas lites for a few minutes after charging for a few min. I'm uncertain of the calibration of my v-meter, but it currently indicates 2.65v for these 2 cells. Depending upon the source, NiCads should max out at 1.45 to 1.65 v per cell. Test 2: Pending- Ryobi drill batteries I'm uncertain how to get a good read on the accuracy of my meter without a high-end meter to compare against. Suggestions? Hopefully, I can find a proper 1 cell nicad charging device.  Thoughts? concerns? insights?

scoochmaroo's ebook

I have been contacted by a member, named scoochmaroo, who tells me she is packaging up a number of origami-related instructables and selling them. She says: Congratulations! Your Instructable has been selected for inclusion in eBook. We're taking some of our Guides to the next level, and converting them into an eBook format to better share Instructables projects with a wider audience. You'll get a copy of the eBook, which you can share with friends and family -- especially those with iPads. You can see a draft of the eBook here: https://www.instructables.com/id/OU8YZ5UGGPEU6AK/ Before publishing the eBook, I will be writing up a description of the projects and a link back to Instructables.com We hope you're as excited as us, and wanted to reach out to let you know this was happening. If you don't want to be included for any reason, please write back and let us know by Dec. 9. --- I have declined. When I posted my instructable to this site, I did so under a Non-commercial Share Alike Creative Commons license. I was serious about that. I don't make money off of my work and I don't think anyone else should do so. I think that's not too much to ask. This scoochmaroo says she is selling her ebook for 0.99 cents a pop. I would like to find out if this ebook has the sponsorship or the blessing of the Instructables site. Thank you very much for your consideration in this matter.

Is it illegal to use bicycle trailers?

Right, so I want to build a bicycle trailer that will carry a kayak and also is used for something else, but that's for an iBle, and not the point. As we all know, bicycles are considered vehicles in all 50 states. But, trailers that are pulled by motor vehicles have to have registration and tags. Is it so with bicycles? I don't want to break any laws, so if anyone has an answer, I'd appreciate it!

Tool-use observed in molluscs!

Everybody knows that humans are "special", somehow different from the other animals on our little blue planet, but it is very difficult to define just how. An early casualty in defining "special" was tool-use.  First chimpanzees, then primates, even birds were observed using tools - hammers, anvils, probing tools, fishing rods, weapons. Now a mollusc is being presented as a tool-user. The veined octopus Amphioctopus marginatus has been filmed by divers collecting coconut shell halves (actually human litter, dumped in the sea) and carrying them away to use later as a shelter. Their habitat is open, featureless sediment, no protection from predators.  The shells provide vital shelter in the exposed underwater plain. If the octopus finds a single half-shell, it digs it up, carries away and then turns it over when needed. If the clever creature is lucky enough to find two halves, it stacks on inside the other, then later "rebuilds" a whole coconut, except this time with a yummy octopus filling. This is another example of high-level intelligence in these bizarre animals.  To me, octopus are a prime candidate for the next "special" animals on Earth, once those polluting apes are out of the scene... Re-using 'company logo' shirts; I have a number of shirts, both polo/golf and button-down with logos over the breast.

I'm looking for some way to re-use the shirts, as they are pretty good quality shirts, so  don't want to just cut them into rags.  I'd rather get some wear out of them, but not advertise the company.  The emroidery is very strong, so picking it out destroys the base fabric.  Other than something else to iron over or taking them to a commercial embroidery machine, how else might I use them?
