Making an amphibious vehicle, but then had a problem...

After watching that one episode of BBC's car show "Top Gear", the one where they do their first attempt at amphibious cars, I had a design idea for one. But after thinking about it for some time, my design brought up some classification questions. 1. In the US, any vehicle with less than 4 wheels is considered to be a motorcycle. If the vehicle I have in mind operates like a car, but has the classification of a motorcycle, AND it can operate as a boat, would it be legally appropriate to label it as an amphibious motorbike or an amphibious car? 2. Taking hydrodynamics, weights and buoyancy into account, the vehicle design so far could hold 2-3 people. If it was two, then the seats would be arranged vertically. If it was 3, then they would be arranged as a triangle. So if it was a three seater, would it be better to have two at the front or at the back? That's all the questions i can think of right now.

Plastic Vehicle Body

Hey, people. I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask questions about this sort of thing and I can't find anything on the web on the subject. I guess not too many people want to build a vehicle body from scratch. Anyhow, here's my situation. I have a large mobility scooter which I would like to transform into something nice for a Halloween parade. I can't do anything too fancy or professional looking because I don't have the resources for something like that. What I think I'll do is build a frame over which I'd bolt sheets of plastic that are cut in particular forms. Then I'd paint the whole thing with spray paint and touch up with an airbrush. What I need to know is which materials to use. There are all sorts of plastic out there. I won't be forming anything with heat, so at best I'll only need plastic that's not too thick and has a good surface for painting. Also, I don't know what to use for the frame. If you don't know about the materials, any sort of advice or encouragement would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Heat storage device for car cabin heater

I want to increase the heat storage capacity of the existing car heater so that I can run the heater (just the fan and a liquid pump) while the engine is off and so I can have a warm car as soon as I start on a cold day. The current heat storage is the coolant circulating in the engine. I want to increase the capacity of that. Instead of simply attaching a liquid reservoir to the heater circuit (to increase the coolant volume), I was considering using a picnic cooler (insulated) box with a coper tube coiled in it. The box would be filled with oil and paraffin. Paraffin melts ≈ 40° C  and I can take advantage of the latent heat of fusion when the paraffin changes phase. The oil is a medium to suspend the paraffin. I need a recommendation of an electric 12 volt pump to circulate the fluid. I request any other thoughts or criticisms.

Human Electric Hybrid Vehicle

The HE Human Electric Hybrid Vehicle It looks like an interesting concept car. Although, it might be hard to find somebody who wants to pedal it. I really like the solar panels on top, and how on the downhill, it charges a capacitor for energy. This HE Human Electric Hybrid Vehicle concept uses the power of your muscles as well electricity stored in the batteries. It allows smooth and constant velocity both uphill (with the help of the electric motor), as well as downhill (when the wheel acts as a generator and charges the batteries). The vehicle can turn 360 degrees maintaining stability all the time. Additional power is acquired from photovoltaic placed on top of the vehicle as well as during de-acceleration from regenerative braking. Elderly and handicapped people that are unable to provide enough kinetic energy can also charge the batteries directly from the grid.

spec a dc motor for a vehicle

I am making an electric vehicle. Assume no friction on a flat surface. The vehicle will have two dc electric motors preferably 24v or 48v system as space is an issue(about 3.5 x 4 feet) one motor on each drive axle. The vehicle will weigh 2000lbs have a max speed of 10miles per hour be able to reach max speed in under 5 seconds overall wheel diameter will be 16 inches Can be geared down to attain needed torque but must go up to 10miles per hour. Please include formulas so I can at least know how to do this in the future. I need to know power, torque, rpm needed for electric motor. Thank you

Aquaduct: Mobile Filtration Vehicle

This is the winning entry from a Specialized Innovate or Die Pedal-Powered Machine Contest. The contest site is a bit frustrating to navigate because it's all slow flash, so skip that and go right to the Innovate or Die Youtube group to see all the entries. I'm skeptical of the developing world benefiting from a flashy tricycle with molded casing, but the concept is going in the right direction.

Unmanned vehicular robot fuels itself

03.05.09 -- In all the futuristic visions of robotic technology, there's always one buzzkill that brings them back to reality: the power source. How do you keep robots rolling smoothly? The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is funding the development of a robot that may have the answer to this.According to company president Dr. Robert Finkelstein, Robotic Technology, Inc. of Potomac, Md., is developing the Energetically Autonomous Tactical Robot (EATR), an unmanned vehicle robot designed to collect biomass leaves, wood, grass, anything combustible and use it through burning to fuel itself. "The idea is to have a robotic ground vehicle that can go out on long-range, long-endurance missions without human intervention," says Finkelstein, describing it as the ground equivalent of long-range unmanned air vehicles. The EATR will be able to retrieve items of interest as well, or act as a weapons platform....In addition to its military applications, Finkelstein also envisions other applications, such as border patrol or agricultural work.here is the link to the full article

FS: BIG electric motors

've got three 36v forklift steering motors. They're big, beefy, and used. Rated as 1 1/3 HP "special" duty. They draw 4.1A no load at 36v. With the gearbox, they draw 4.3A no load. Speed for the motor alone 3225RPM , with the gearbox is 75RPM. Torque must be something outrageous. They have an optional mating 43:1 Sumitomo-made gearbox which I reckon would make these some great drive motors for a large heavy project. Without gearbox, they would be excellent for go-karts, suicidal ebikes, etc. I even know of a e-car project that used a similar motor. (forkenswift) The motors alone weigh about 18lbs. Not sure what they weigh with the gearbox. You want one. I have three. I'm asking $100 each for the whole motor/gearbox shebang. I'm up to something dastardly...

Does anyone here have experience with: -electric vehicles in general, -Prius-style hybrids -deep-cycle batteries -independent rear suspensions -repurposing "free" lithium-ion batteries -The heat output of half a ton of such batteries, and a cooling system that might be up to the job -electric dragsters -building a car from scratch (and I do mean scratch... starting with building the frame) -Using a large gasoline engine to power a generator, the output of which directly powers an electric motor, and any power left over going to the above-mentioned batteries -high performance electric motors -low-performance electric motors -Breaking, destroying, or otherwise rending any of the above components? On a budget?

Arduino Clinometer for vehicle

I'm building a Clinometer for a vehicle, that will show roll & pitch, and log this data as well as yaw (skid). I'm using a 3 axis accelerometer with an Arduino, and am looking for ideas on improvements. I have the g forces for the 3 axis being displayed in the serial monitor, and am ready to display values on a LCD, but really thinking this should be graphics of a vehicle showing pitch and roll, like the old Jeep Clinometer I had as a teen. https://www.instructables.com/id/An-Arduino-Accelerometer/

3D Printed Solar Electric Vehicle

Last months, as passive and low energy construction business went down in Romania, I had time to revival an old project - Zero Emission Solar Electric Vehicle. While researching online and off-line for chassis, body and materials suppliers and manufacturers, went to the 3D Printing idea for chassis, body and parts! There are already at least 2 cars printed so, and I'd like to share what I know already and also to learn from you. The vehicles will be modular, also. Hope you will love this idea, when I will have design ready and show it here :)  We might use Open Source Vehicles chassis, but not sure about this, because 3D printing will reduce the need of many parts that are in a classical chassis and body.  Your info brought here and your decent comments will be deeply appreciated. Thank you!

sidecar wheel position

I've looked up sidecars on google and found lots of information for sidecars on vehicles that have front steering only in which case the sidecar wheel tends to be positioned parallel to somewhere between the midpoint and the rear of the vehicle, however if the vehicle has both front and rear steering would the sidecar wheel be best positioned parallel to the exact midpoint or not?

Antarctica-Bound Hybrid-Electric Hummers Visit Pier 9

Drive Around the World, a nonprofit founded in the Bay Area, revealed its latest innovation, a pair of hybrid-electric Polar Traverse Vehicles, also known as the Zero South PTVs. These two unique vehicles are bound for a history-making expedition across Antarctica and they came to Pier 9 today to talk about it.  These revolutionary vehicles, designed using Autodesk tools, have undergone an extensive transformation from gas guzzling Hummers to open source, environmentally conscious biofuel hybrid-electric vehicles outfitted with ice tracks and capable of standing up to the Earth’s harshest environments. Vehicle designers and leading NASA scientists discussed the expedition's logistics and the latest in climate discoveries. From the Zero South team: There is intentional irony in repurposing the Hummer H1, which many view as a contemporary symbol of gross consumer waste and inefficiency. Others view it as a remarkable multipurpose machine capable of extreme on and off-road performance. But no matter which way the audience is ³polarized² by the vehicle, this adventure will appeal to everyone. Zero South Electrical Engineer Brock Winberg

Riding in style for a 14 year old that is...

I have a challenge/ project/ idea for you all! Have you ever sat in a shopping car while somone pusshes you around? Me and my buddies did this a few days ago and i thought to myself what if this shopping cart had a motor. A shopping cart made for driving that you could sit in and steer! This inspired me to make a moving vehicle. Ideas that came to mind were narrowed down to either the shopping cart with motors and steering wheel or the mini-tank which would be a sheet of 1 inch plywood on wheelswith a steering system aswell. Has anyone ever done something like this before?

DIYers converting gas powered cars to electric

Yes, you read that right-people at home are converting their regular gas powered cars to electric. They have an average range of 40 miles, which could be doable if you have a short commute or live in town.Of course, since they are charging them by plugging them into a regular outlet, they aren't really being all that green. You'd have to charge it off solar or wind power to do that. But it's still saving all those nasty car emissions-and it's very cool.So when do we see an instructable?http://www.cnn.com/2008/TECH/ptech/08/14/electric.cars/index.html?eref=rss_topstories

Project VR6

Hello all, thought id share my progress of my 97' VW Golf mk3 VR6 2.8 to create some discussion and VAG banter. I brought her completly standard and wanted to build a real sleeper for road use and track use that is fast, practical for everyday use and safe for the family. When I got her back in 2009 she was a standard vr6 nothing really special just a well looked after example Firstly I gave her a good clean inside and out along with a service.......and by clean i mean really cleaning, shampoo the carpet, treat the leather, clean out the heater units, remove and shampoo the roof lining, polish and resin the paint, de greese and steam clean the engine bay to name some of the bits ive done. The result was a very clean base "template" Once all was clean and I could see areas for imporvement I began the work, replacing all the bushes, front and rear lower arms, brake lines, discs, calipers, exhaust were the easy steps When it came to the engine itself I did not want to mess about with it too much just improve the BHP and general running of the car as 174bhp from a 2.8 VR6 is shocking. So removed the engine and re conditioned the gearbox and clutch. While this was out I thought it best to also do the pull chain not a big job but much easier with everything out, once back in I still was not finished.... After giving the engine a full service with new plugs, leads, coil pack, oil change, rocker cover, inlet manifold, seals, upgraded air filter I decided to get the car chipped to see what BHP could be pulled out of her. Happy to say with all that work she was running on the first dyno 192bhp a massive improvement from standard 174bhp and all that from just replacing and upgrading some standard old parts with more expensive performance parts. Once the Chip was installed and the guys at the tuning store had done their works she was happily chucking out 216.4BHP With that I was more than happy and the work put in over the 6month period really showed. I then decided to have all but bumpers colour coded and did a few minor tweeks to the exterious to make her a clean standard example... I will add a full list of specs and work done soon, enjoy the pics feedback welcome

Car Alarm

I just had an idea.... Someone needs to make a car alarm app for smart phones. It can use the microphone to listen for breaking glass, the speakerphone for playing pre-recorded messages (step away from the vehicle, the police have been called), the camera can sense movement inside the vehicle and the GPS can sense (and report) movement of the vehicle. All of this information can be sent in real time to the other phone that you carry with you. Installation is as easy as turning it on and tossing it in the seat! Compatible with any car! Battery backup! :)

Wanted: Vehicle

Hey there I am a dude who is just trying to find a car, I recently had stolen and it went through a chop shop. The insurance company will only settle to give me a piece of crap settlement fund, so in other words I need a vehicle (preferably running). I live in the central Texas area, and would love some help here because I need a vehicle to get to work and school to pay my bills. Please PM me if you have any ideas or can offer any help on the subject. I only have a few hundred dollars I can spend (the insurance settlement). I don't mind doing a bit of work cosmetically, or even functionally as long as it wont cost me a fortune to fix up front. Thank you. AB

Movie Error

I was watching the first part of Generation Kill, its about a group of marines during OIF 1, and I was getting all into it and I noticed an error, a Major error. Well just look at the picture. Normally for a vehicle to go, the engine has to be RUNNING. Tactical vehicles have switches to start them. You have off, run, and start. He has the engine off, but yet the vehicle is making noise and its going down the road. Now i know the vehicle is being pulled by a trailer, and the engine is "off" because if it was "on" it would be a crap load louder and everyone would have to scream at each other just to talk, but come on guys at least rig the knob so that it points up right when driving. What movie errors have you noticed that made you upset?

Donate Your RV

Hello Guys, Donating a recreational vehicle to charity helps an organization and can result in a tax benefit for you, the donor. The Internal Revenue Service allows taxpayers a deduction for donating vehicles, including RVs, to certain charities. Special rules, however, apply to these donations and can affect the amount of your deduction. Find a charity that is qualified to receive tax-deductible donations and that accepts RV donations. Many charities, including churches, youth clubs and homeless shelters, seek vehicle donations, either for their own use or for resale. Thanks a lot! Tim Boon http://www.carsforprostatecancer.org/

Escape from Berkeley

DARPA had a Grand Challenge. . . the rednecks a Cannonball Run. . . and the hippies a bunch of WVO buses broken down on the side of the road. Now, NASA scientists and junkyard fabricators go head-to-head in a no holds barred battle of engineering prowess and creative excess. Hanging somewhat in the balance, are bragging rights for saving the world. That, and a grand prize of $5,000.Escape From Berkeley is a road rally taking place this October, from Berkeley CA to Las Vegas NV, which is open only to alternatively fueled vehicles. It's being put on by The Shipyard, "A collaborative build space for Art and Energy". There are eight vehicles already registered, most of which are using some variation of gasification of scrap biomass as their fuel. It is open to any vehicle meeting the alt fuel requirement that can get to Berkeley by October. This weekend they are having an Open Shop Weekend wherein registrants can work on their vehicles, also potential registrants with potential vehicles, also various interested parties and hangers-on. If the idea of getting a car to go from Berkeley to Vegas using nothing but coffee grounds appeals to you, this is your kind of road rally!Images are of "Kristie's Flyer", a steam-powered runabout associated with the Neverwas Haul, and "Hooker Cooker" which I know nothing about but had an interesting picture. More info is available at the Escape From Berkeley site on the Vehicles page.

Tour of the Largest Private Collection of Military Vehicles

Through the MIT Club of Northern California, Christy and I got the chance to tour the Military Vehicle Technology Foundation's collection in Portola Valley. Seeing 100 tanks from different time periods lined up and seemingly ready to roll was pretty amazing. I've always had a thing for half-track vehicles, and was especially pleased to see a half-track motorcycle (SdKfz 2 Kleines Kettenkrad). In all honesty, this is probably one of the most impractical vehicles ever created, but it just looks so cool. My other favorites to see in-person were a SCUD missile launcher (SS-1b Scud A) and an M48A5 AVLB (armored vehicle-launched bridge). They also have a large shop where they repair, rebuild, and often re-engineer parts to restore the various tanks. While I was there, they were in the middle of repairing a World War II-era German tank found in a river. The collection is the hobby of Jacques Littlefield, whose father, Edmund Littlefield, amassed a $1.7 billion fortune by running the family construction and mining company, Utah International, and merging it with GE (more here at Forbes). The Instructables forums aren't exactly the best place to few 57 pictures, so here's my Flickr set, and here's the Flickr set of the person who organized the tour.

Comparative Environmental Friendliness of Internal Combustion and Electric Vehicles

I would like to know which type of vehicle is more environmentally friendly. Electric and hybrid vehicles are gaining in popularity and they are touted as green, but they clearly require more energy and resources in their manufacture due to their battery packs, rare earth metals and electric motors. On the other hand, traditional internal combustion vehicles require fewer resources to manufacture. However, I imagine that it converts fossil fuels to energy less efficiently than electrics because the conversion process is smaller, unlike in large scale power plants (not sure if this is true). Electric === More resources to create (-) Power Plant (Generates energy efficiently?) (+) -> Power Lines (A: energy loss) (-) -> Motion +,-,- Gas === Fewer Resources to create (+) Combustion Motor (Generates energy inefficiently? B: energy loss) (-) -> Motion +,- I'm pretty terrible at explaining this, but is the energy loss at A or B worse when comparing the two systems? For electrics to be viable, it must offset the higher creation cost. Just wondering which one is actually more "green" when you factor in production (disregard cost of transporting fossil fuels to gas stations and power plants).

RC vehicle function modification

I have here a cheap rc vehicle with foward//turn capability. Is there some way i can alter the controls to make it turn left and right? The front wheels arent restricted to left or right only, they turn freely in either direction but the remote only has a turn button. (Pics of front and back of remote just added. Some sort of switch activates each motor but the control is either on or off from what I can tell. Although from what I can see, simply adding a couple of switches with foward/reverse functions soldered directly to the board would do what I needed.)

Brake lights

So i have a '95 chevy suburban, and it has a few issues. at the moment, the biggest issue is my brake lights. Basically, when the vehicle is in accessory and i depress the brake peddle, my brake lights come on, YAY! but when i have the vehicle running and i depress the brake peddle, the 15 A fuse blows and the lights go out. now i have a schematic diagram for the whole vehicle (in parts), but im still trying having a hard time finding where my problem is. im sure there is a short somewhere but it is just all really confusing to me. thanks much in advance. note: night time lights work as well as all turn signals.

Is it illegal to use bicycle trailers?

Right, so I want to build a bicycle trailer that will carry a kayak and also is used for something else, but that's for an iBle, and not the point. As we all know, bicycles are considered vehicles in all 50 states. But, trailers that are pulled by motor vehicles have to have registration and tags. Is it so with bicycles? I don't want to break any laws, so if anyone has an answer, I'd appreciate it!

mice in motorhome

We have a Motorhome istored in a shed and are forever getting Mice in it. We have searched many times trying to find any hole they could be getting in , but without success.   If we could fill the vehicle with water & then see where it leaked out it would work but destroy the vehicle!!! Is there any coloured gas for example, we could put in & put it under pressure to see where it leaked out, or light a smoky fire underneath it & put the interior under vacuum.   Any ideas greatly appreciated.
