Vertical Vivarium

Hello,  About two months ago I finished building my first vivarium. It's a monster at 5'wX2'hX2'd. It has a false-bottom, live plants, anoles, homemade irrigation system, appears cordless, made of 1/8th inch plexiglass and silicone sealed. Recently, it began to leak. The water pooled underneath the bottom panel and remained hidden until it seeped through the plywood it was resting on. I now have a series of buckets collecting constant drips underneath this thing. If I'm going to go through the trouble of emptying the tank and fixing the seal I might as well redesign it so this problem doesn't happen again.  I'd like to make more of a vertical vivarium since I am housing green anoles and they love having height. I'm thinking of recycling as much wood and plexiglass as possible; however, I'd like to avoid as much DIY sealing as possible. I'd like to have either sliding plexiglass doors, plexiglass doors on hinges, or a plexiglass panel held in place by magnets on the front. To fill the vertical space I'd like to have a living wall type plan. If anyone has any tips, guides, or advice for: the front doors, living walls, improving the bottom, or improving the false-bottom, it would be much appreciated.

Motorized/electric vertical blinds?

I have some vertical blinds in my living room that are manually driven via a cord to tilt the blinds and another cord to open or close the blinds. I wonder is there a conversion kit to open/close and tilt them electronically via a remote control? I have found some kits from hundreds of dollars to thousands, but know I could find one or build one for way less. Any thoughts or ideas?

Need to build a device to measure verticals

What i need to do is possibly use lasers, i need about 30 of them around a half inch apart inside an aluminum pole or something. then i need a light connected to each one which will be at the bottom of the pole. After the beams are broken i need a sensor to light up to tell me the beam has been broken. this way an athlete jumps and once his fingers break the beam i know how high he has jumped without having to deal with the vanes in the current device. just push a button to reset it all. no messing with the pole or vanes or anything.

How to make a vertical moving shelving system

The wall against which i will install my kitchen has a niche about 1 mt wide X 0,45 mt in depth going from floor to ceiling. I would like to install a 2 level shelving system that moves vertically to hold conveniently lets say a coffee maker, a food mixer and other appliances. Any suggestion about components to make a durable thing? I am thinking about a counterbalanced braked manual moving system with linear gear, chains and weight or a servo system with integrated gear reducer, 12 volt motor, stroke limiter, 220v-12V converter and command , plus a linear guide. Any idea is welcome

I'm trying to upload images to my first instructables.  The first picture I uploaded in the intro was a vertical picture and uploaded fine, but the rest of my vertical pictures in the steps are all turned to the side so they're landscape instead of portrait.  I've tried uploading them a few times but it still doesn't work.  Can someone tell me how to fix this?

wind turbine- I need wiring help

Hey guys,  I decided to make a vertical wind turbine out of materials I had laying around in the garage/shed.  I found everything I need; old bike, pvc/dryer exhaust pipe, old dryer motor.   I wanna make something along this concept.... https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/236x/b6/c1/cd/b6c1cd7b76e82cef51fefdfa4f62bfcd.jpg the wind turbine would be chain driven from the sockets on the bike wheel.  I have the whole concept of the turbine drawn out and ready to go.  But when it comes to the wiring on the motor im stumped.  If someone could help me, that would be awesome! I found two motors, here are the links to them.   http://www.ebay.com/itm/Maytag-Washer-Motor-Clutch-6-2016660-16-S68PXGCN-1002-201807-12002353-/181947664075 http://www.ebay.com/itm/Genaral-electric-DRYER-MOTOR-5KH26JJ064S-/281776789034

how to use bike gears to control speed of vertical axis windmill for pumping water?

I would like to use bike gears to switch gears eighter clockwise, or counterclockwise on a vertical axis windmill for pumping water. The purpose is to slow down the speed of the spinging rotor or switch it intoa idler gear, to allow the rotor to keep spinging, and to disconnect the water pump, so it wont' be damaged in high winds; Also not to slam the rotor to a sudden stop, by ingageing a brake. I am building this not only for myself, but also my church for them to give away free to needly people around the world. Thank you for any and all help in this matter.

It means I have to balance on one foot and slide the fader up and down with the other in order to get a swell/strobe effect. Have you any idea how I could hack it to turn the horizontal linear motion of the fader into a vertical motion (basically a pedal I can stamp on it swell like a wah) Any suggestions helpful. Cheers!

Vertically Adjustable TV Wall Mount

I am in need of a vertically adjustable wall mount that would hold a 32" LCD TV and raise/lower the tv with 12-24" of travel. I live in an apartment and am on a tight tight tight budget, so I am trying to dual purpose a TV to be both computer monitor and bedroom television. My problem is that when the TV is sitting on the desk, I have to look between my feet to see it from the bed. It just isn't comfortable viewing. If I were to mount it at proper viewing height from the bed, I would be craning my neck to see it. I have scoured the internet and the only mounts they make like this are as expensive as another TV.  I am a novice at this kind of thing, so the simpler and cheaper the better. If I could mount some sort of track to the wall and use a heavy pin to set the height or something like that, that would be an idea. Any help would be much appreciated! Thank you,  Sean

Coils for vertical axis wind generator (VAWT)

I've followed several instructables concerning vertical wind generators but found it hard to locate magnets of any decent size here in the UK. I'm going to have to order some that are about the size of a 2 penny piece (the cost of anything bigger is much more than I can pay for)and therefore I will have to make similarly small coils to equal the magnets size. Considering the base of the generator is 40cm in diam how much space must there be between each coil and can you have more than one row of coils. Another one inside the first. The same configuration with the magnets ofcoarse. Lastly, on these cicular magnets is there a plus and minus to give you an idea of what way round you should attatch the magnets to the bottom side of the rota. Thanks.

Flywheel car

I've seen some old flywheel powered toy cars and i'm wondering could that be scaled up to work on a pedal car so that it spins up while you're pedalling and then have it engage by lever or something to assist pedal power over bumps and stuff or just give it a boost on the flat? also most flywheels seem to be mounted vertically, is there any reason not to mount one horizontally as i think it would fit into the pedal car better that way?oh and assuming i'm limited to a certain weight would a small flywheel with an evenly distributed weight or a wider flywheel with most of the weight on the outside edge maintain its spin for longer?

VERTICAL AXIS WIND TURBINE FEASIBILITY HELP

Guys need help to realise its feasiblity and pros & cons. This project will comprise of a renewable energy source which is controlled by TI msp430 controller by closed loop system. This renewable energy source will use a magnetically levitated vertical axis wind turbine with single phase permanent magnet alternator made by our team. There will be 3 stationary wind guide vanes/flaps of concave shape on the outer periphery of turbine. These vanes will be controlled by dc gear motor for constant wind flow and protection against high speed winds. Using perturb & observe MPPT algorithm on DC-DC boost converter, constant DC voltage for GRID integration is made. A lower energy Bluetooth module will send data on user computer about whole system parameter, hence making the whole system to be smart and hence data is saved in database. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fC5hYLjhO9U

how to lift vertically with gas assist cylynders?

We have an overhead canopy that need to be lifted 3 feet into the air, and then let down to its origianal position at the end of the day.  it now goe's up and down with a smaller tube within a larger tube and pins put in position to hold it at the right height.  the size of the canopy is 4' x 12' and weighs approximately 150 lbs, as the supports are made from aluminum.  As we are not getting any younger it is taking its toll putting it up and down manually.  If there any way that we could re place the smaller inner tube with some type of gas assist cylynder that would take it up and down mechanically?  Imagine having to lift a box .,and then down again straight up and down.  Any replies would be appreciated. I am building a v-axis wind turbine. I need to know what kind of DCmotor to use for a low RPM DCgenerator. Help me?

The winds in my backyard aren't extremely strong, but I want my design to work and provide a good amount of power if possible.  What kind of DC motor do I need?  Is it easy to create a DC generator from scratch for this type of thing?  Would the ideal motor have a low RPM?  (Because I'm pretty sure my turbine will have a low RPM) Low torque?  Obviously I'm just starting to wrap my head around all of these ideas.  How do I know which motor to get based off the information I am given from the site? Right now I am looking around at www.allelectronics.com , if anyone knows of a better site that would also be appreciated as well. Bottom line: I'm looking for as much power as I might be able to get, but I have low winds, and not a whole lot of money.  I was thinking I might be able to setup the axle to a pulley system with some sort of rubber band going from the axle to the motor, would this work? I know it sounds liek I haven't done my homework, but truly I have, I'm just getting drowned in the options and choices and possibilities at the moment. Thanks so much for you help!  I truly do appreciate your time to help me! Best regards, Aaron

Can the forward vertical tube on this paintball gun be removed?

I am thinking of getting a Spyder MR1 to convert into one of these.  Anyway, the issue is the forward vertical grip piece. I am pretty sure that it is just basically a square tube that the gas feed hose runs through. I really don't need it there because it would interfere with the design. No one has been able to tell me if it can be removed. Hence, my asking here. I think there is a screw on it, but I am not sure, So, after all that background crap, my question is: can I remove this thing without messing it up?

Vertical Axis Wind Turbine - What is the best airfoil?

I've always been interested in windmills. The vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT) seem really cool. I discovered there is a company that (under contract) assembles them right here in my state of Michigan. So, on our summer vacation last year I diverted the family unit over to the assembly plant to see what's new, and exciting. Well, guess what, the plant is closed on weekend. Who knew. Well, for one, Momma thought I should have. Oh well, we got to see their demo unit Windspire up close anyway. It was just whipping. Anyway, to my question, if I wanted to build a really efficient VAWT, what would be the best shape for the airfoil? I've attached an old patent I found that has a drawing (Patent 4247252). I copied the drawing into Inkscape and redrew the airfoil using bezel curves. But, is this the best shape to start with? I'm hoping some aeronautical engineer out there can comment. Thanks, Jim

USMC Vertical Marathon - 24th April 2010 - UPDATED - we did it

This may be of interest to some of you that climb and walk or love being outdoors. I'm a member of the University of Surrey Mountaineering Club. On April 24th we are planning to have our second ever Vertical Marathon, a charity event during which between 30-50 of us we will attempt to climb just over 26 miles.... UP! The event will be held at the newly opened Surrey Sports Park climbing wall where we will each have to climb about 80 of the 10m routes. We are raising money for the Mountain Rescue Council (MRC). In 2007 we raised £3995. This year we're aiming to hit £5000. The MRC was chosen because of the Club’s regular trips to mountainous areas and the USMC's recognition of the vital role fulfilled by the Mountain Rescue teams. It is hoped that the Vertical Marathon 2010 and similar challenges will encourage newcomers to the sport, raise awareness for the Mountain Rescue Council involved and put a smile on people’s faces. The MRC do a LOT of great work with very little funds, and not just for climbers. If you'd like to sponsor us, our just giving page is here. If you'd like to read a little more about how the money would be spent first, here is the MRC's page on how donations are spent. Thanks. Wish me/us luck!

Arduino coding help! Buttons, switches, and servos are not agreeing.

Hi my name is Nash and I've been playing with Arduino Duemilanove for about a year and just touching a little bit of everything. Right now I'm have the Arduino powering basically a pan/tilt device that rotates horizontally 360 degrees and vertically 90 degrees. Using a specific code containing one button, I can have the Arduino run a sequence of the two servos. I would like to add a second button and have a switch to choose "modes." If the switch is OFF, then pushing one button will run the sequence- simple enough. When the switch is ON, I would like the same button as before as well as an additional button control rotation of the horizontal servo. I have the code using only one button and no switch to run the sequence and the device runs flawlessly. Once I add the "switching" part to the code, the servos freak out and fidget constantly without a positive result. I am fairly new to the servo library in Arduino and am open to any kind of instruction or changes to my code below. Thanks for your help! #include Servo servo; //we think this will make the Cont-Rot servo to sit still Servo iservo; //set second servo #define button 3 //attaches button to pin 3 int ibutton = 0; //ibutton is used to store state of input #define button2 2 //second button attached to pin 2 int qbutton = 0; //qbutton stores input #define button7 7 //switch connected to pin 7 int sbutton = 0; //switch stores input void setup() {   servo.attach(5); //attaches servo to pin 5   iservo.attach(6); //attaches second servo to pin 6   pinMode(button, INPUT); //sets button as input   pinMode(button2, INPUT); //sets button2 as input   pinMode(button7, INPUT); //sets switch as input } void loop() {   ibutton = digitalRead(button); //reads state of button   qbutton = digitalRead(button2); //reads state of second button   Switch = digitalRead(button7); //reads state of switch   if (Switch == LOW) { //if switch is off   if (ibutton == HIGH) { //and ibutton is pressed     iservo.write(0); //run this servo sequence     servo.write(100);     delay(2000);     iservo.write(0);     servo.write(80);     delay(4000);     iservo.write(0);     servo.write(100);     delay(2000);   }   if (ibutton == LOW) { //ibutton is not pressed     servo.write(90); //do nothing     iservo.write(50);   } }   if (Switch == HIGH) { //switch is on     if ((ibutton == HIGH) && (qbutton == LOW)) { //ibutton is pressed and qbutton is not       servo.write(80); //servo spin counter-clockwise     }     if ((ibutton == LOW) && (qbutton == HIGH)) { //ibutton is not pressed and qbutton is       servo.write(100); //servo spin clockwise     }     if ((ibutton == LOW) && (qbutton == LOW)) { //neither button is pressed       servo.write(90); //do nothing     }   } }

Increase V.Leap

I was think of injecting plastic sponge filled with water as the sole of a basketball shoe, hoping the water pressure could help to increase the leg power and increase the vertical leap. Meaning : using plastic sponge Or rather i think of another alternative, which is to use static electricity to store inside the shoe, which later will transfer from the shoe to the leg of human, and hopefully increase the vertical leap.

new blinds flapping in wind

I purchased a horizontal blind for my (single) sliding glass door (SGD) which was a mistake. I should've bought a vertical blind since whenever I open the SGD a bit the wind catches the blind like a sail and it makes a racket when it smacks against the frame. Obviously a vertical blind could've been opened a bit more than the SGD so the wind would not catch it. Any thoughts on how to remedy my problem would be appreciated! Dan

(newbie) materials to build a sliding "inverted-L" stand / pole

Hi folks!Just discovered this fantastic website! I have this very cool idea for a 'ible I am working on and cannot wait to put it on the site. For now and as a first step (sorry, I am a newbie!), I am simply trying to build a simple stand with the following "inverted L" shape:- - - - - - - - - - - - - -||||(floor)Think of tje coat hanger in the picture below, only sturdier and with a single vertical pole (and without the wheels/mesh at the bottom). Also, the vertical pole does not need to be telescopic: as long as I can adjust the height of the horizontal pole I am happy. This could be done eg by mounting the horizontal pole on a "tee" fitting; but then how do I make it fix into a given position/height on the vertical pole (and still be adjustable)? (I had a look at this 'ible -- https://www.instructables.com/id/Third%2c-fourth%2c-and-possibly-fifth%2c-hand/ -- , but I don't understand how the tee fitting gets fixed into position: welding?)I am thinking of using pipes or PVC from a hardware store. My big question is: how can I get the vertical adjustment feature using such readymade materials? Thank in advance for any help!James KirinPasadena, CA
