The Virtual Theremin

Ever since seeing Bill Bailey live a couple of days ago, I was fascinated by the Theremin he used throughout his performance. I did a little googling and found that it's relatively simple to make one, but I didn't want to, I wanted one now! Back to google it was then, and I came across this beauty (link to .exe file). To play the Theremin, you click start, then move your mouse around the grid. The X axis controls note frequency and the Y axis controls volume.I'm now in the process of annoying my parents with it >:]

Virtual Intelligence!!?

Im been looking through pages of text about artificial intelligence and I had an idea, like so many others that have used speech recognition software or siri..... wouldn't it be cool if I could have something similar for my home like JARVIS from iron man? Now I understand that with current tech this is pretty farfetched, but couldn't I create something that is dynamic enough to accept new commands based on voice parameters effectively recreating the ability to learn..... for example you program a few basic commands and if you need a new one you instruct the VI to create the code from the voice inputs... like if it dosent know a word, you tell it to create a new macro associated to this word? for example "VI turn on lights" is great and the lights will come on but if you say "switch on lights" then it wouldn't know what you mean.... couldn't there be a thesaurus embedded that it will check against what you say and then creates a new command if you ever say that phrase again? after all that's how we do it when we are young in schools isn't it? I know that's probably a simple example but with this it could effectively learn our language and after time understand our slangs and sayings depending on each individual! my idea was to use a raspberry pi and arduino for the hardware but my knowledge of both languages (python and C) are limited and before I spend a lot of time trying to complete this code id like to know if its even possible and any input the community as a whole has on this subject? Also id like to stress im not trying to create skynet but merely something that appears intelligent but actually isn't! After all if we created a true AI, wouldn't we be enslaving it if we were to use it for our own purposes and not its own? Thanks in advance for any sensible input you all have!

Digital Patches

You may be asking yourself (or everyone else around you), what are these "digital patches" I hear so much about? The answer is quite simple, digital patches are online greeting cards that you can send to other users which will show up on their profile page as a small picture icon. When you click on these little icons, it will display a larger sized image with a personal message explaining why the patch was awarded. There are a number of default images you can choose from, or you can upload your own.For instance, if you really like a project someone has posted, you can send them a digital patch to let them know how awesome it is.Or if someone subscribes to your feed, you can thank them by sending them a digital patch.Or perhaps you just want to send lots of people virtual cookies for a good time. You can use digital patches to do that too!Or if you want to start a club to honor everyone who has ever posted how to make a pocket protector, you can do that!Or you can use it as a way to say hello to old friends by sending them a patch with their two favorite things.Or perhaps you just want to brighten someone's day with some flowers.Whatever is your impetus, by signing up for a pro account, you can receive a number of digital patches to distribute as you see necessary.

Problem with Virtual Patches database?

Did something go wrong with the Virtual Patches database at the turn of the year? Ed had given my my patch for the Best-of-I'bles book, but now it's gone (I still have the Robot Art patch). I've checked a couple of other users known to have the book, and the patch is missing from their profiles as well. UPDATE: This morning, everything seems to be back to normal. Should have updated before Noah took up his time posting :-/

Mobile Virtual Presence Device? Answered

Right, so in "The Big Bang Theory" there is an episode where Sheldon makes an rc stand with a monitor on, and it has live footage of his face on it.  There are ways to do this, but they all seem to point to using an rc car with a 10 metre range and 30 minutes battery.  The flaw with this, is that if you want to be at work using one, or at someone's house with it, then you're gonna need a lot more than 10 metres!  How can you make it so that you can control it anywhere, either using wifi or just connecting somehow?  (I'm sorry, I'm really bad at electronics, so excuse my poor understanding.)  As an example, you don't need wifi to text someone, so do you need it to control an rc vehicle?  Ideally, I'd like to make one at about £300-£400, and as like the one from the big bang theory as possible, so not just a tiny stand that people have to keep charging and you have to crane your neck to see.  I'd be happy to use a £60 tablet with skype for the video, but what I'm mainly concerned about is how to control the rc stand/vehicle from a distance away. Thanks a lot! -Finzaz

ARK, hologram community

Hello everyone ! I'm building a project, called "the ARK" : It is a holographic pyramid with a new type of interface who gives life to your projects. Holography has always been fascinating: you see your 3D, you work on it, and you can create directly with your hands. Today this type of holography is really expensive compared to the simplicity of its fabrication process. I want to give the possibility to use it for everyone. The Ark has a software suite. Your drawings, films, models, all in holograms and in 3D GPS augmented reality view, directly on your smartphone to walk in your creations. And more:  with the sensitive gloves it will be like feeling the 3D under your fingers. Films, 3D, drawings, you will be able to touch and feel all of it. THE STORY : This project started two years ago with some research in my architecture school; I created the first holographic reflector “Ark-mini” for the students of our school. This creation is now in open-source (for more information see HERE, you can translate the page) For this new project, I want to create the more intuitive, complete holographic software: you will just need an USB and HDMI connection and let’s go! Order, and the ARK will follow it with his speech recognition menu. I will present 3 softwares for the Ark:     The ARK-creator for your 3D creations     The ARK-movie: what you film is what you see… in holograms.     The ARK-net to send directly in augmented reality your project, to visit it with you tablet or smartphone. This project is a personal initiative that I have been developing since last year, thanks to the help of some forums and Internet’s people who follow me. Today I propose you to make this project a reality. The first Ark serie will be presented in Paris, at the “Futur-en-Seine” numeric convention in the “Gaité Lyrique” on 13th june, and at the end of june for my Diploma. The thing is, i want to build this project with a creative commons license (open-source), and i'm trying to build a community. For the moment, i make a simple design for the ARK, i will have six month to build the software. We can (i hope so), in the future, create something like a "Jarvis" (who do not dream about this :) ). For the moment, i'm finishing the file with the design and the prequel of the software (openframeworks). But you can register in the forum and i'will send you a newsletter when it will be done. I hope we can make something beautifull, and, it is not just an idea:  i am doing it (but i need you)! here the LINK of the project here the FORUM / COMMUNITY

Basically what you need to do is listen to this with your EYES SHUT and with headphones or earphones: NOTHING ELSE, otherwise it will not work. Oh and you need to have the earphones/headphones plugged into both ears, not just one. This is basically designed to give the illusion of having a haircut, but it REALLY WORKS!

Class assignment on the MAKE/Instructables community

I need the Instructables/MAKE community help with a class project. "To develop a persuasive argument in response to this question: "Are virtual communities, real communities?"" I decided to pick Instructables community, being that it is mostly online, making it a plausible virtual community. This community is also very open minded and sophisticated, and have no doubt that I will get plenty of input and good arguments. I hope can accomplish this and not sidetracked by all of the cool stuff the is always on the front page. So let the posting begin! Funny note, someone in my group picked myspace under the same prompt, that is going to be funny ass to see how that pans out.

DIY Virtual Reality Omni-Shoes

Since buying an oculus rift, realizing the limitations of movement. I've been researching all the different types of Omni-directional methods of moving in a virtual enviroment. Infinadeck seems to be the best option but it's probably too expensive for me.Vortrex looks a nice concept, I would like to try and see what it feels like having my forward motion cancelled out. By building my own conveyor belt shoes, there is a video on youtube demonstrating powered shoeshttps://youtu.be/C5hPyHxrz94The prototype above, uses roller skates powered by two motors with flexible shafts This is similar to what I want to replicate. I dont mind being tethered by power cables.I'm trying to put together a list of the main components suitable for operating under these load conditions. What motors/flexible shafts are a good choice for this application?.

Instructables: The Game!

I think it's a great idea, but I wouldn't even know where to get started on the technical aspect, nor the legalities involved. The game is basically a walk through an instructables-inspired home-built city of interesting devices and systems all loosely (or even exactly!) based on actual instructables. During the games as you explore you stumble on different tasks that you have to complete. You find parts to complete tasks scattered about the city, or win them for completing smaller tasks. Thoughts?

Is it possible to virtually install from recovery discs?

I have a new macbook pro that comes preinstalled with snow leopard. Upon digging in the attic, my brother found mac os 9 and the recovery discs for my dad's macbook pro (the old model, 2006, preinstalled with tiger). I was curious if there was a way to virtually install tiger (like using virtualbox). The reason I want this is because I want the classic environment to play some old games, and I tried Sheep Shaver for mac os 9, but it crashed when I tried to play the game. From what I understand, tiger was the last to support the classic environment.

Virtual potter's wheel controls 3d printer

From UnFold via NOTCOT: For L’Artisan Electronique, Unfold created - aside from the ceramic printer - a virtual pottery wheel in collaboration with Tim Knapen. This pottery wheel gives visitors a chance to ‘turn’ their own forms. At regular intervals, a selection of these designs is printed in clay and exhibited in the space. In L’Artisan Electronique, pottery, one of the oldest artisanal techniques for making utilitarian objects, is combined with new digital techniques. The virtual pottery wheel was realised by means of a 3D-scanner and digital design software. However, the installation still clearly refers to the artisanal process of working in clay. The printing process imitates the traditional technique used by ceramicists, in which the form is built up by stacking coils of clay. It looks fun, and even potentially genuinely artistic, but I would like to see a much higher resolution on the scan, to give a less "digital" look to the final object. Designguide.tv interview from Unfold on Vimeo.

Resources for manufacturing materials for a Virtual Reality Simulator?

Hi, I am building my own "homemade Virtual Reality Simulator" that would consist in a moving platform on top of another, both connected through simple compression springs. I am a big guy and weight almost 100 kgs (200 pounds) therefore the platform should be designed to these standards. It shall look similar to the image attached. QUESTION: Do you know a good information source to find the right materials (even suppliers) for manufacturing the upper and lower boards? Thank you for any feedback.

Now you can pretend to be busy at work (or school) while making some new amazing Lego Builds! You can download Chrome and get started HERE.  It's super easy to use AND IT'S ALL IN 3D. Right now there are only basic pieces in 10 different colors and doors and windows, but I'm sure there will be more parts down the road. So do you think this is as cool as I do, or is virtual building a step in the wrong direction? ** If you make something with it, take a screenshot and post the image for others to see. ;-)
