Leatherman: Surge or Wave?

Ok, so I want to buy a Leatherman. I have narrowed the choice down to the Surge or the Wave. The Surge has more tools, but you cannot have the file and the wood saw at the same time. The Wave has both. I am swaying towards the Wave at this moment, do any of you have Leathermans and would recommend a certain one?

This theory states (my own be exact) that a certain wavelength can become an amorphous solid using a certain gas, a friend of mine agreed with me. What is your opinion on this matter?

Is it possible to produce a sound wave that makes us experience silence?

What I mean is: a computer or whatever produces that sound and we can't listen to anything, not even our own speach. That would make us experience TOTAL silence. Is it physically possible? That would rock. :) Thanks, Pedrotome

Is there something wrong with my new Leatherman Wave? Answered

So I finally got a Leatherman Wave after finding a good price at a sports store for $55 (Wave+Croc+bit extension) but it isn't quite what I expected. I've never had a Leatherman before or a large multitool (Wave replaced a Gerber Dime), so maybe this is normal, but it is really stiff to fold at the pivot points. Some people say that it just needs to be opened and closed a lot to loosen it but I would like some advice. I haven't oiled it yet but I'm not sure what kind of oil to use. The tools and knives are ok, they don't require much force, but I am surprised by the folding action. Is the folding action supposed to go different ways? From the pictures I included, sometimes it goes to the right and sometimes to the left.

How can I pass voltage through a wire only when it goes over 7 volts? Answered

I'm trying to hook up a Z-Wave contact sensor to my home alarms wired contact sensor. The alarm panel seems to provide a constant voltage of 6.8 when the door contact is closed and 13.5 when it opens.  The z-wave module I am connecting however looks for no voltage in order for it to be closed and any voltage for it to be open. So how can I only pass the voltage to the z-wave sensor when it goes over 6.8 volts? I have a ground and power wire running to the respective terminals on my alarm panel. I'm thinking I may be able to wire in a resistor but am not sure if that is what I need or what size. Thank you

Google Wave Invite Trades

Ok, you can trade whatever you guys want for wave invites (no money). Rules: 1. No posting emails below, only do it in PM's 2. No trading money/people/animals, only patches or other stuff that you come up with 3. No spamming. I hate the food and hate when people do it. 4. If you dont have an invite, dont say that you have one. That is called lying. I have 8 active invites so if you want one comment below. I will start this off

...and not many friends who know what it is. I have 15 of them, so is there anybody left who wants one that doesn't have one? Just leave a comment with your e-mail address. If you don't want to post your e-mail, post a comment claiming it and then send me a message. I'll update the count as I send them out. 08 invites left.

mechanical wave

I'm trying to build a tail of a fake animal, and the tail is kinda long (total length of about 3 feet), I have a 10 pound pull solenoid and I want the tail to kind of do a wave thing, like if you were do a wave with your arms ( not in a group, all by yourself where you hold your hands together, you know what I'm talking about). I know how to do the electronic part of it by sending pulses to the solenoid, but How would I convert that into a believable tail?

Instruct a wave.

Instructables can be much better. Powered by google wave. after i get my server set up with google wave i will try to help instructables by building extentions to help the whole thing work. Installing instructable found @ https://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-install-Google-Wave-to-your-server/ first instructables would need to install the wave extention to openfire and send me an email at james@jamesm.com.au when thats done for me to start working, making extentions. Installing instructable found @ https://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-install-Google-Wave-to-your-server/ robots made: Rossy, translater, spelly, spell checker, bloggy, alows waves to be on https://blog.instructables.com/ blog? please can still use wave, robots i will make: Sally, alows people to sell there projects using paypal, not made yet, hard, instructables robot, will be a hidden group that would include the robots above, hardest extentions i will make: JW, uploads video(mp4, flv, avi, ect), music(mp3, avi, wav, ect), images(jpeg, jpg, gif, ect), not yet, easy, swf view, alow swf files to be shown on instructables, not yet, easy Questions... will this disable instructables for a little lime? NO, to annoying. will we need to resumbit our instructables? NO that would take forever, robots job. what would instructables like this for? NO SLOW FLASH, faster to load, interactivity, save space Facts. Addsence will be getting instructables more $$ by more users. members can make group projects. members in an area can organize an event. eg maker-fair (please come to australia) members can add any files into waves. (some files may need a new extention just made for them) I will be updating this alot when I think of more so come back soon. Extentions found: Canvas -- bad when i saw this -- vectoreditor -- this has a little prob with text. like/dislike, html_gadget. Extentions i'm working on: JW player uploads and plays videos. (still needing some more development) Bot_protecter. simple editable div can not be recorded by bots eg. email addresses. (NOSPAM WAHOO) i will add all the xml files to a wave for me to create installers and add them stright into the instructable robot i am also working on. How will the gadgets be called without the xml file to add manualy? ok so if i can i will alow the instructable robot to change [canvas] [video] [like] [html] into the gadgets. the video first ask for a file and then embed that video with the jw player and lisenced if donations go towards that later in this project. and for the bot_protecter it will just pick up email address and add them into the safe gadget i made or get called by [safe]. theese can be shown as plain text by {canvas} that will show as [canvas]. if you want to see what some gadgets are goto http://jamesm.com.au/blog/ just remember that you neeed an account untill they alow guests to look at waves it is a smart way to embed the waves that i will make better when i can and this is not installedd on my server because i need to update the java. cheers and happy waven.

Radio Mod?

I would like to mod a handheld radio (or even a analogue tv but radio would be better) to get to listen to higher frequencies than normally available. I'd Like to hit the 1420Mhz mark approximately but with little electrical engineering or architecture experience, I'm not certain how? Which might make a TV easier to get there as UHF covers that right? (still safer to play with a battery powered radio than a 240V powered one) I figured there is someone out there with the ability to figure out what components need changing? The variable resistor that tunes it perhaps? If you'd rather post an instructable I'll follow that or just tell me what needs replacing with what? Any Ideas?? Thanks

Why is a modified sine wave harmful to electronics? Answered

I was reading an article in a computer magazine about UPS (Uninterruptible power supplies). It said that UPSs produce a modified sine wave. However it said that using a modified sine wave to operate computers over long periods is harmful. I wonder how a modified sine wave could damage a computer. All it is is just a sine wave that steps instead of a perfect curve. Right?

How to upgrade a Modified Sine UPS to Pure Sine? Answered

Hello, How could I upgrade an uninterruptible Power supply that has a Modified Sine Wave to Pure Sine wave? I got a cheap 400 watt HP UPS (for a tenner) with a modified sine wave;  then got to discover it would be much nicer that is was a Pure sine Wave ^^. The purpose is to use it as an inverter for most household items (in a solar set-up). There are videos to increase wattage but I have not found yet something informative enough to upgrade to pure sine. Thank you!

Schematic needed for square wave generator.

I need a schematic and the code for a square wave generator, with the following specs (although it is a bit specific) Repition Rate (external trigger, 20 Hz 200 Hz 2KHz 20 KHz 2 Mhz and 5 MHz) controlled by a rotory switch. a vernier (pot) controlling pulses per second.) a single shot button (N.O. push button) external trigger (BNC Connector) Delay (Rotary Switch)  .1, 1, 10, 100, 1k, and 10k microseconds Vernier (pot) for the delay a sync output (BNC Connector) with a toggle switch for polarity. double or single pulse on the output (toggle switch) polarity selection on the output (toggle switch) gate on off (BNC connector and toggle switch) 10db step (on or off toggle) 50 ohm load on or off (toggle switch) rise and fall time (pot) Any help would be greatly appreciated, as this is a bit specific. I only need a schematic, and everything else i can take care of. Once again, Thanks for the help.

Square wave inverter?

I am building an inverter that will use a square wave pulse to drive MOSFET's at 50-60Hz. I have read and heard a lot of stuff that running square wave into a transformer is not a good idea, what I want to know how bad is it? Also will adding capacitors as seen in my image be able to smooth the square wave a bit to help the problem? If so what capacitance should I use? (About 200A input) (The 12V square wave is coming from paralleled MOSFET's)

How best to move a servo to music?

Hi All! I have a quick question, I want to move a servo in time with music and was wondering how best to do that with an arduino. I found someone on Instructables who made a talking skeleton open its mouth when the volume of the music rose above a certain point but just remapping the analog in signal from my wave shield is not moving the servo as smoothly as I would like, it just sort of jitters around. I guess this makes sense as the voltage changes quite a bit to create an audio wave form. I have a wire from R7 on my wave shield plugged into an analog port. Would the MSGEQ7 chip be the best way to accomplish my goal or is there another way? If anyone is curious I am attempting to move the arms of a portal turret in time to the turret opera. Thanks for your time, -ookid
