Blanket weed killer

My pond gets blanket weed each year. One of the causes is excess nitrogen, but since some of this is due to run-off from farmland, I can only control it to a small extent. I have seen electronic devices sold which are a control box, with some wires which wrap around and around the pipe from the pump/filter - obviously some kind of magnetic or pulsed field is created and this wrecks the blanket weed cells without harming other plants or animals in the water - has anyone any idea how to make one? As you can see from pic2 we get tadpoles, small fish and things - the blanketweed can get so thick that the little fish get trapped in it! I have to pull it out, but often you end up pulling fish etc with it, so I'd like to resolve it. We use barley straw to prevent green algae, but it does not prevent blanketweed.

How do I convert a weed eater to edger?

I have a Poulan Pro (PP133) gas trimmer and I would like to convert it to an edger. I am also going to try and find a way to install or convert it so when I hit the head on the ground the string will advance instead of having to turn off the weed eater to install new string. Last time I called the Home Depot they sell an attachment that does edging for my weed eater but it cost over $79. It almost costs more then my weed eater. Thanks. AL.

Weed Whacker-Powered Bicycle

This is a bike I built a year ago. It uses a 30.5cc (about 1.5hp) weed whacker engine for propulsion. A version of the same thing was on Instructables, and that's what partially inspired me to make this. ;) The engine mounts are made out of wood, because I still have not learned to weld, but they hold up just fine. The engine is an ten-year-old Echo weed whacker. It has 10,000 max RPMs. The bike peg attached is 2" in diameter and gives about 25mph top speed. There is no clutch! The one that came with the engine was way too flimsy for a vehicle like this so I took it out. Saved a lot of space, too. For the throttle, I disconnected the back brake line and connected it to the engine. The front brakes are still intact, and you can turn the engine off to slow the vehicle as well. I added the extra heatsink to the engine to help keep it cooler, as it was never meant for this kind of exertion. It gets as hot as the engine, so I guess it conducts the heat away pretty effectively. There is a 10-LED bargraph to show the engine temperature. It uses an LM3914, an op-amp, and a thermistor. There is also a 555 to drive a buzzer when it gets too hot. The bike has head and taillights that are both driven from a joule thief. They are not very bright; they are more for being seen than to see. Here's a youtube video, taken almost a year ago: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bdySFqmK0Fw Some more photos and a little more information: http://forums.modretro.com/viewtopic.php?f=3&t;=656 Comments/criticisms? :)

Propane torch

I've considered several times buying a propane torch to burn weeds in my driveway, or melt ice. The one I'd like to have looks like a cane with a threaded connector on the handle end to attach a propane bottle. They all seem overpriced to me and I've always wondered if I could make one cheaper than I could buy one. I can find the tubing I need but I've never been able to find the rest of the parts.  Any suggestions or would someone like to post an instructable showing how to make one?

Can anyone help me identify this plant, please? Answered

Found in my new Community Garden plot, among the weeds that had sprung up over the winter. I was going to pull it, but then it starting looking to me like it might be a desirable garden plant. A few clues:garden is in Seattle, WA; in a Temperate Rainforest climate.raised bed garden, filled with a none-too-rich commercial compost, built on top of native soil composed of equal parts clay & glacial till.this plant or its seed survived an unusually long hard freeze (for this area) this last winter, 12 days of temps ranging from 10-20 F.discoloration on leaves is probably Leaf Miner damage, of which our community gardens have a minor plague.just before deciding that it might not be a weed, I discovered that it has a thick white taproot that extends well below the 4 inches or so that I'd dug out. Thanks for any help you can offer.

Why won't my two stroke run?

I have a two stroke weed eater engine (actually from a tiller but it's the exact same) and I am having trouble getting it to run. I have the carb screw tightened all the way so the carb is opened up as much as it can be but when I start it, it coughs like it wants to die then it dies. If I squeeze the throttle a little it will continue running or if I squeeze it all the way it will still run. It just won't run if I let it sit. Also, I am intending to use it to put on a bike and it has a clutch but it doesn't really work that well. It will engage without even squeezing the throttle. Any idea of where I can get a small geared clutch that will fit it? Thanks.

How to mount a wheel to a weed eater engine (direct drive) when building an r/c car?

I want to use a weed eater engine to make a fast r/c car. I have already stripped the engine down to it's basic components (removed all the plastic leaving only the bare engine) to make it easier to mount to a to the vehicle. I pulled an 8" pneumatic wheel off of a Razor electric scooter which i plan to somehow mount to the clutch system of the engine. The idea is to have a direct drive system to cut down on the complexity of a chain drive (I have the chain drive off of the electric scooter). To do this I'm thinking of bolting the wheel (which has 3 treads that previously mounted the sprocket to the wheel) directly to the bell of the clutch (the part that the clutch engages at a certain rpm and connects to the engine to the driveshaft of the weed eater). Is this a good idea or is the bell not strong enough to bolt a wheel to? For those of you who don't know what the bell is that I am referring to: http://i1.ytimg.com/vi/6FcFkbxhAXU/hqdefault.jpg Once I have the wheel mounted (it will have a single rear wheel), I will use the front end of a spare r/c car for the steering and the drive motor to pull the throttle cable on the engine. This will probably be mounted to a plywood base. Ideally, the best option would be to have servos hooked up to an Arduino controller to control the steering and throttle, but a WiFi Arduino ($80) (could I substitute it for a Raspberry Pi?) + 2 servos ($30) is outside of my price range. What do you guys think of my design? Any suggestions?

Canada Set to Ban "Weed-n-Feed" Products

Re-evaluation Note REV2010-01, Uncoupling of Fertilizer-Pesticide Combination Products for Lawn and Turf Uses 2 February 2010 HC Pub: 100037 ISBN: 978-1-100-14700-0 (print version) ISBN: 978-1-100-14701-7 (PDF version) Catalogue number: H113-5/2010-1E (print version) Catalogue number: H113-5/2010-1E-PDF (PDF version) Table of Contents 1.0 Purpose 2.0 Scope 3.0 Background 4.0 Regulatory decision 1.0 Purpose This document is to communicate to stakeholders the decision to uncouple fertilizer-pesticide combination products intended for lawn and turf uses. 2.0 Scope This regulatory action is focussed on the lawn and turf uses of fertilizer-pesticide combination products on the following types of turf: Lawn turf planted in or around residences, as well as public and commercial buildings including schools and cemeteries Sports and recreational turf such as turf in parks, playgrounds, golf courses, zoos, botanical gardens and athletic playing fields These types of turf are collectively known as fine turf, which may be maintained by homeowners or by professional applicators. This regulatory action does not include agricultural uses of fertilizer-pesticide combination products (turf farms), or products that have a single active material with both fertilizer and pesticidal properties. 3.0 Background Health Canada's Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA) regulates pesticides under the Pest Control Products Act including those intended for lawn and turf uses. All pesticide products that are registered for use and sale in Canada have undergone rigorous health and environmental risk assessments including the pesticides present in fertilizer-pesticide combinations. Pesticides are often combined with fertilizers and sold as fertilizer-pesticide combination products, which are regulated by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency under the Fertilizers Act. When pesticides are combined with fertilizer such that the two components can only be applied at the same time and to the same area, the delivery mechanism for the pesticide component is brought into question. The very nature of combination products removes the flexibility of applying the pesticide as a spot application due to the need to accommodate the fertilizer, which is designed for broadcast application to the entire lawn surface at specified times of the year. Pesticides should only be used when and where there is a need. Broadcast applications of pesticides over the whole area are warranted only for severe pest infestations that are widespread. As pest infestations are typically patchy, spot applications of pesticides to those areas are most often sufficient to ensure adequate control in turf. To be effective, fertilizers and pesticides must each be applied at the appropriate timings, which typically do not coincide. Fertilizers are most often applied in spring or early summer, and/or in late summer or fall. A spring-applied lawn fertilizer results in increased tillering and rapid growth as temperatures increase, resulting in turf of increased density. A fall-applied lawn fertilizer also results in increased tillering and may result in increased winter hardiness. The majority of pesticides found in pesticide-fertilizer combination products are broadleaf herbicides belonging to the synthetic auxin group of chemicals. This group of chemicals only controls broadleaf weeds that have emerged and are actively growing in the lawn. These herbicides are not preventative in that they will only control weeds that have emerged and they do not prevent weeds from becoming established in the lawn. Further, this group of chemicals is not long lasting in that they do not persist in the soil to prevent future weed infestations. Combination products have been purchased for their convenience and ease of use as a two-in-one product to address separate lawn maintenance issues (for example, nutrient deficiency and various pest infestations) with a single application. However, these products are unsuitable as a delivery mechanism because they support broadcast application of the pesticide when this might not be warranted. Ultimately, fertilizer and pesticide applications should be based on need. Fertilizer should only be used if the turf will benefit from additional nutrients, and pesticide should only be used as a broadcast treatment if the pest densities are sufficiently high across the area to be treated. Targeted, well-timed liquid formulations of pesticides minimize pesticide use on the lawn and turf sites. 4.0 Regulatory decision Based on consultation with the provinces, experts and registrants, the PMRA has concluded that fertilizer-pesticide combination products for lawn and turf uses do not support the goals of best practices for pest management in turf. The PMRA, in conjunction with Canadian Food Inspection Agency, is taking action to uncouple the fertilizer-pesticide combination products intended for lawn and turf uses. A date of last sale of 31 December 2012 for fertilizer-pesticide combination products for lawn and turf uses has been set in order to allow for replacement products to be made available where needed. Should situations arise to warrant the use of a fertilizer-pesticide combination product for lawn and turf uses, the PMRA will assess combination products in terms of the timing of application and flexibility to apply as a spot treatment, as well as potential risks to human health and the environment. The PMRA decision to uncouple fertilizer-pesticide combination products is not based on the health or environmental risk assessments but rather the nature of combination products. Combination products remove the flexibility of applying spot applications of the pesticide due to the need to accommodate the fertilizer, which is designed for broadcast application to the entire lawn surface at specified times of the year. Turf fertilizers will continue to be available for broadcast application when needed. Pesticide-only products will also continue to be available for lawn care use to homeowners and commercial applicators for either spot treatments of localized weed patches or for use as broadcast applications to severely infested turf areas when warranted. Although more time consuming, pest control in lawn and turf can be achieved with careful pesticide spot applications that target only the pests that are present and separate broadcast applications of fertilizers. Now if only the US were to follow suit...

My back yard is made up mostly out of an increadibly steep hill. For years I have used a non-propelled push mower for the top and mowed down until the mower has almost reached tipping point (just above the tree over the rock). From there I have to use a weed eater to cut the rest of the yard until its flat. this is a very difficult and time comesuming process that will drain anyone physicly and mentally.
