Laptop with low Connectivity

I have an HP Windows 7 laptop that always had fast internet up until 4 months ago. Its been having 2-3, or sometimes 1 bar now. Im trying to use my personal hotspot but thats not even working. My sister has a Windows 7 laptop as well, uses the same internet and still has better internet connectivity than I do. FULL BARS! I know my laptop is capable of having fast speed too, I just don't know how. I think there is a setting or program stopping it from having better connects. How do I fix this?

Plexiglass Temporary Window

Hi folks.   I'm designing a vent that will vent outside using a vent inside a plexiglass window.  I don't know how to mount the sheet inside my chosen window.  It's a modern window that has a screw type mechanism that takes the window away.  I took the screen out, which just clips in, and expect to do something similar for the plexiglass item. I looked at some of the hardware available at Home Depot and couldn't find anything that would make this thing work.   If anybody has any ideas, that would be great.   Some pics

Window or glass film that lets light pass through, deflects heat. Does it exist?

Just wondering is there such a thing? If it does, what would it be called? I'm looking for some kind of window film that can maximize the natural sunlight coming in, yet at the same time deflect most (if not all) of the heat. Some kind of film that can be layered/sticked onto windows, glass. Been googling around to no avail. Any kind of help is appreciated

Problem with too much window condensation

I have double pane, insulating glass house windows that collect condensation during the winter heating months. The condensation is not between the panes, it is inside the home. The water builds up and runs down onto the wood frame causing rot. It occurs only on the bottom inch or two of the window. The home is in Northern Wisconsin where it is commonly 20 deg F outside and 70 deg F inside. The interior humidity is controlled and not excessive. Aside from setting the interior humidity to desert-like conditions, how can I remove the moisture and prevent further damage to the frame? Desiccant bags? Solar powered fans? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

need help designing a Window Well cover

I am tired of the cheap plastic window well covers that are so expensive to buy at the hardware store. My 3 year old daughter has already fallen through one of these into the well as it disintegrated into sharp plastic shards. Thankfully she was uninjured and I vowed not to let this happen again. I have thought about having steel grate cut and welded, but that will be very expensive. My requirements are that light can get through and they be strong enough to stand on. My ideas include using finish grade plywood and drilling circular holes, and having the finished grate set on L shaped Aluminum brackets within the well. But i need help. I am appealing to my fellow creative muggles to come up with an inexpensive and useful solution. A sincere thanks in advance. Rick

Wi-fi enabled window shutters

I want to automate (4)  sets of window shutters (called Plantation shutters.). I have the mechanical parts worked out which I plan to power with a servo motor on each.  Can someone help me work this out? I am somewhat handicapped now and have difficulty getting around from room to room.  There are a total of (22) actual shutters, but I will have the shutters on each window linked together with a rod powered by a positioning servo...four windows...four servos.  The operation can be simultaneous.  I do not need to operate them separately. Thank you for any help you can give.

electronic window frame

If anybody could help me out that would be great...  I saw plans for this a few years back but lost them. The idea is to use 4 laptop screens in a mock 4-pane window frame. There was a hard drive and power supply behind the frame that would put a picture up so you are looking at a different view everday like the Eiffel Tower, or Golden Gate Bridge, etc. Hang in an empty space on the wall and its like a fake window with a killer view!!! Sound like a potential favorite?

Making my own Window exterior insulation panel insert

I have standard wood windows in our home where we should have spent the money and bought good, double-pane aluminums, but didn't so.... I need some advice. These windows I have are too new, to replace. There are small recesses on the exterior of the wood window frames where I want to insert permanent glass/plexiglass cover for insulation. I need advice on what framing I can use, similar to a poster frame trim where I can install it around the glass, then slide it into the window recess. I’d like to use an aluminum trim that is fairly narrow that would look good. I find framing trim that has slots I can slide the glass into, but what I’m finding is too thick. I only have about quarter inch I can insert to. Any advise?

Every link clicked is opening in a new window

Since the new updated homepage, I am getting sessions on Instructables that every time I click a link the new page opens in a new window. This isn't happening all the time though and sometimes I can use the website normally. I am on Windows Vista, running Firefox 19.0.2. I am having no issues on any other websites I usually use.

How to drop an egg from a window and prevent it from crashing

Hello everybody I think you might find this exercise fun and at the same time original ideas are needed! Thanks In advance!! I'm studying design and this exercise has become a classic at my school. Since 10 years ago students have tried to reach the objective but also to develop an original and creative solution. The exercise is to develop a kind of device in order to be able to drop an egg from a window in the first floor and land it safely on the ground at a distance that has to be less than 3 cm from it. Plain Parachutes and slides are forbidden as they are too obvious unless they have a distinctive aspect and also you can`t wrap the egg in something soft (like a pillow) and drop it. Important things to take notice are: -The person has to loose all contact with the egg (You can´t hold a fishing rod with an egg on the end of the line and slowly get it down). -It must be a raw chicken egg Thanks!!

DIY Plexiglass Window

Hey guys, time for another update of what I've been up to lately in my spare time. The other day I just finished a project, where I decided to take some scrap plexiglass and install it as a window in the top of my subwoofer, just like how more expensive pre-built subwoofer boxes have them. I tried to take pictures as I went along with it. Trust me, I may only have a handful of picture, but it took A LOT. Most of the hard work was chiseling the MDF board to fit a groove for the plexiglass to sit in and make a seal. P.S.: Chiseling MDF board is like chiseling cardboard, very easy to take too much out! Also, does anyone have any ideas as to HOW I could get some of the deeper scratches out of the plexiglass??? I'll be taking it apart to re-bevel the edge of the seal once I find the damn wood router, so when I do that I'd like to buff the plexiglass out a bit. Also, I think I own bragging rights for doing this.

DIY Blackout Blinds?

Does anyone have any ideas on how to create a super cheap, super easy way to create some blackout shades for my bedroom without buying expensive custom-sized blackout blinds? I fact, I already have custom-sized blackout blinds -- except they're roller blinds, and when they're deployed, although their size is exactly the same as my windows (about 70" wide by 20" tall) when they're rolled down, and the sun is shining on them, the light literally blasts through on all sides, rendering them almost useless. What  I need is a light barrier that makes the room pitch dark even if the sun is blasting directly on the windows. I looked at this site: http://www.blackoutez.com -- but after ordering, and even if they do ship to Canada, it's liable to be prohibitively expensive. What I need is something cheap, easily mountable, easily unmountable and able to be stowed in a closet every day, then brought out every night for the next day. I thought of using those dollar store poster boards, maybe taped together with duct tape. Black ones would probably do a good job of blocking the light and they're pretty big -- maybe 48" x 36" -- but there is still the problem of how to attach them to the tops of the windows. So again, here are the criteria: Cheap, maybe less than $50 all together Block ALL light completely Easily mounted, easily unmounted Able to be stowed quickly and easily Durable, able to be used every day for months Able to recite the Gettysburg Address with no cue cards (Okay, I'm willing to forego the last one!) Turn your inner geniuses loose! Thanks in advance Nickster

Bay window seating question

Hello,         I'm hoping somebody can shed some light on a project I want to do. A new property I'm moving into has bay windows and I want to build a seat for the Mrs. to read and relax on, however any time I look for instructions it has you attach the seat to the wall. Would there be any detriment to simply building a seat in the shape of the wall and just pushing it against the wall without installing it permanently? I'm renting this place and don't fancy having to rip this out of the wall if they don't want to keep it. Thanks, Adam

Solar Power Blinds

Im just posting this as a thought, cause I thought it would be cool if you had some blinds on say the south side of your house and you glue or attached strips of solar panels to the out side facing panles and you would turn them to the sun I know its possible and you could even lift them up

Cleaning windows with magnetic sponge

I was looking for a solution to clean my roof windows and found this solution: www.supermagnete.de/eng/project136 But I don't know which magnets I should order. If they are to weak the sponge will fall of all the time, but I use this monster magnet like this guy the window might get damaged. Is there someone who got a collection of magnets already (and dirty windows) and want to give it a try? In my case the window is around 10mm thick + lets say 5-10mm sponge on each side + 3-4 mm thick piece of plywood to distribute the pressure.

Faux Window

I'm looking for ideas to make a fake window for my cubicle at work. Ideally, it would be lightweight and provide something other than the flourescent lights above. I really like the look of Bright Blinds (see attached photo). I'm thinking a DIY version of that with maybe a poster with a view behind the blinds? I'd love some input on how to go about this project! Thanks!

Solar heating and perceived temperature

We've had an interesting discussion spanning several months on the efficacy of this instructable's approach to heating: https://www.instructables.com/id/Foil-Solar-Panels-for-Windows-VERY-Easy/ The conversation has gone long and isn't really that appropriate for the comments there so I've moved it here. Summary: The approach described in the instructable is to create a thin metal panel that hangs inside of one's window, which is heated by the sun's radiant energy. Convection then carries the hot air next to the panel up and circulates it within the room. The question is whether this approach provides a warmer perceived environment than simply letting the light into the room. As I see it, the question has two components. First, which one nets more heat energy inside the room? For an average room, the light will be scattered many times before a tiny fraction reflects back out the window. A flat foil panel as described in the instructable would have to be extremely absorptive to match this level of energy capture, because it gets only one bounce for its capture and also must capture the heat in an extremely small thermal mass. For this part of the question, not having a panel seems the likely win. The second part of the the question is more complicated. What is the perceived temperature in the room, given differences between convection heating of the air versus radiative heating of objects and surfaces in the room? On this count I'm unsure, but it seems that radiative heat contributes more to human comfort (see this Wikipedia article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mean_radiant_temperature). If that's true, the panels lose again. Discuss!

On a site about doing things your way, you've changed the way my browser works. No middle click?

Why can't I middle click, or use a Ctrl+Click to open links in a new tab in my browser.  It's standard behavior that works all over the internet otherwise. Don't hijack my clicks, it's annoying, and a major usability buster.

external links wrapped & prevented from opening new window/tab with cmd-click or middle click

Any links in an instructable that go an external site use some sort of javascript trick to prevent these links from opening in a new tab if cmd-clicked (on both Firefox & Safari) and middle-mouse button clicked (on Safari). A website should not override standard browser behavior configured by the user.

microsoft's 235 patents ...

Microsoft claims the opensource community (mainly Linux) violates up to 235 of their patents. Though, as Microsoft don't provide any list of these patents, some says it's just a campaign of fear and destabilization ... Do you know some examples of Microsoft's patents that are actually violated by Linux ?

Link open in new window not working

When adding a hyperlink to my Instructable text I check the "open in new window" check box, then hit the "Insert" button.  However in the live Instructable, the hyperlink does not open into a new window, but opens in the current window taking the user away from the Instructable page.  I've tried modifying the Instructable using IE 11 and Chrome.  I'm on an HP laptop running Windows 7.  I've also looked at the live Instructable on IE 11 and Chrome...but I get the same result of the new window not opening. Is this a known issue and a fix is upcoming? Thanks.

I think that it would be really nice to see an instructables app in the windows phone store, with the windows phone platform growing and becoming more and more successful, I think that a lot of users would be really excited to see an app developed for the windows phone users! Hope this is a possibility because I would really love to see a windows phone app. If progress is currently underway and the app is being developed that would be great, but otherwise I hope that someone will start making one soon.

Downgrading a Windows 8 Tablet to run Windows 7?

Hello Everyone, I am trying to downgrade a HP Elitepad 900 to run on Windows 7 instead of Windows 8. (*Note - There are some reasons outside my control that dictate using Windows 7) I know that this device "should" be ok to run windows 7 it's just the drivers I am having some troubles with. Has anyone had any success with this type of thing and if so where can I get the drivers for this? I haven't installed anything yet for I want to make sure I don't brick the device. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Device: http://www.engadget.com/2013/05/09/hp-elitepad-900-review/
