Winter weapons of snowy destruction

It's winter and snow is everywhere (well where I live there is) People are sledding and making snow angels. And of course my favorite part- Snowball fights. Snow in ball form whizzing thru the air towards people. Me loving to build stuff and loving to improve it to, I wanted to make something that could throw snowballs better than any person. I have an idea for a couple launchers and cannons but I want to see other people's ideas. So post anything, a launcher, a cannon, a catapult, a chucker. Anything that can accompany someone in a snowball fight. So people POST.

According to physics, does driving with a heavy load increase traction in winter?

Many Canadians enjoy adding weight to their vehicles over the winter to increase traction. How does it work? Since friction is force normal times mu, thus having a greater force normal means more friction. However since mu is usually so small, the increase in friction is negligible as compared to momentum. The momentum from added weight, mass times velocity would be dramatically increases, meaning longer distances to stop and easier fish tails around corners. Therefore less weight is more benficial. This is my logic, and I may be wrong. I don't know, thats why I'm asking...

Help for a wheelchair + resources for the winter project ...

Hello everyone, I am a wheelchair user and lover of winter sports, especially skiing. During my time as a walker, I used to go to the ski slopes as soon as it snowed because it was between snow and snowy landscapes but now it is difficult for me because my wheelchair sinks into the snow and prevents me from moving. I am aware that there are resources for my case, be they the http://www.polarstroller.com/en/store/2-Set-of-4X... or also an option for hiking such as freewheel http://www.polarstroller.com/en/store/2-Set-of-4X... or other options like that. The point is that they are really expensive and difficult to get in Spain. For what I plan to do it myself but I'm not very handy. Could you give me some clue, instruction how to start step by step? Thank you for your time and help in advance.Sorry 4 my poor english !!!

building winter greenhouse.... need ideas

Hi there,I live in Boston, MA and I am looking for some advice on Greenhouse construction for winter gardening only (and vegetables that are appropriate for that as well). I am looking to build a greenhouse that I can put up in the fall and take down in the spring for growing a winter garden. It will have to be able to be taken apart into its components and stored in a shed in summer months since my family has no need for it then. Due to the fact that it will be used in the winter, it will have to be highly insulated and have a heat sink that will be able to help maintain a constant growing temperature for the plants inside. Ideally I would like to avoid expending much energy heating the greenhouse. I am, of course, also doing this on a budget. Here is what I have come up with so far. 1. I will use triple-wall or 5 wall polycarbonate panels for the walls of the greenhouse2. I have found a few insulating products that look like they could be useful3. I am thinking of using a solar collector water heater as part of the heat sink- easy to construct on my own : https://www.instructables.com/id/Solar-Thermal-Water-Heater-For-Less-Than-Five-Doll/ that could circulate hot water into the heat sink4. I am learning about heat sinks and thinking that I want to use the simplest design and organic materials (mud, rocks, or water) to hold the heat during the day and release it at night.5. The greenhouse footprint can’t be larger than 8’ x 10’ 6. I prefer the simplest construction that meets my needs (and the easiest to put up and take down)Questions that I have:1. What are the possibilities for using compost as a source of heat?2. What about a PVC frame?3. How would I circulate hot water through the heat sink?4. What are methods to reduce daily management of the project?5. Types of hinges to use?6. What type of material should I place the greenhouse on?- it will be sited on the concrete area around our swimming pool and I don’t know what sort of insulation is necessary after that. I had the idea of wood pallets with insulation inside them but that may not be enough at all.7. Any ideas of ways to re-use materials to do this cheaply and reduce waste?8. Any suggestions on the optimal shape of the greenhouse roof/sides to increase heat retention and circulation of warmer air.9. Any suggestions of retailers that might have the materials that I am looking for. Some links that have been useful so far:http://attra.ncat.org/attra-pub/solar-gh.html#storagehttp://growerssupply.com/farm/supplies/cat1;gs1_greenhouse_building_materials;gs1_corrugated_sheets_panels.html

Can I etch a PCB in the winter...? Answered

I want to etch a PCB, but it is rather cold where I live. I had settled on the HCl/Peroxide mix, but I could use something else if need be. I wouldn't be worried about it, except I get the impression it's a good idea to carry out the reaction outside, where it is cold right now. If working outside in the cold is a no-go, is there any etchant that is "safe" (I understand that safety is relative, I mean along the lines not immediately gassing me) to use indoors with ventilation? If so, how much ventilation is needed? Are we talking an open window, or an industrial fume extractor? Also, I wasn't sure which category and channel would be the best, so if a mod or somebody sees this and has a better classification, go ahead and change it. Sorry for making this such a long question; I'd just like to be able to use my circuit board before I die ;). Thanks, dedgerton

At home we have about 10 cm of snow lying and more is still falling out of the sky... Any ideas for winter outdoor cat shelter?

Basic shelter doesnt work in the freezing months of winter....any ideas to keep kitties warm and out of elements? Styrofoam and rigid insulation boxes are ok, but its difficult to keep dry in the snow and wind. I like the chicken coop shed, making it airtight and perhaps wrapping or draping it with solar heating material-hmm, it would that work? Cant be too big, this is to be placed in semi-private view. Why is my female rabbit going after my other 3 females rabbits they have been together for a year and she just started?

Chippy (one of the 4 females) has been going after the other 3 when around them. so now she is sepperted from them. they all live outside in a large hutch with an upstairs and down stairs(there is a door you can shut to keep them from going up stairs or down stairs so they can be seprate). chippy is now up stairs at night and down stairs during the day and gets an hour to run everyday while they other 3 are inside their hutch(there is a 6 foot run ). The 4 of them have been together for a year, since winter has started moving in, Chippy has been going after the other three by putting his head under their butt and biting them so they go away, or is it to show dominance? Today i let him sit with Cocoa (our lop ear) and he was cleaning her ears and sitting with her on top of their hutch just with her and had made Nutty (one of the other 3 rabits) go away. chippy hopped down to the run and cocoa followed and then i noticed his ear was startn to bug him a little and he made her go away (with the bighting there bottom thing). he seems to tollerate cocoa Way mor then the other 2. when ever alice (1 of the 4 chippy used to have a big bond with) comes within a foot of chippy, chippy pounced at her and alice ran off.  I think it's dominance, will getting her spayed fix this? I worry if chippy will be warm enough threw the Whole winter by herself...(i put warm blankets in both halves of the hutch each night for them to use and on the openings in the hutch thats made for sun to go threw we have covered so its not So cold at night) Advice? please

Windshield Wiper Warmers like the rear window defrosters?

A few years ago, someone asked about windshield wiper warmers.  No real responses.  I'm asking again.  The issue is that in the northern states, the wipers get iced up, and it happens even while you're driving.  We know how to do this for the back window, which won't save anyone's life if the front one is iced over.  We know how to use a hot wire to cut foam. So we know how to heat wire. Some of the newer cars hide the wipers below the glass, so defrosters don't help much.  And washer fluid doesn't work nearly as well as you might think.  Hot liquids freeze faster than cold liquids, but the goal here is to warm up the wiper blades.  How would we go about making a warm wire setup that can be connected to the battery for slow warming and lay under the wiper blade area?  Any guesses?  It's getting cold here in Michigan!  You'd think one of the automotive companies would figure this out, but they clearly think we all have garages and live in warm states.  I'd like to see some responses that wouldn't be too difficult for a novice - I don't care about technical terms, I just want to know how to wire it up so it works.

Challenge: A key defroster for opening bike locks in winter.

Hello all.So I live in Montreal, winter is long here. Every morning opening our bike locks is problematic. We fixed it partially with lube, but this post is not about these solutions.I have been looking for a device that could heat the frozen core of the lock. You can see an image attached of a product not available anymore to get the idea. I guess it was not working very well...I have zero knowledge in electronics/electricity. I thought this question could be interesting/challenging for some of you. So ideally the gadget would be:Small enough to be carried on the key chain or in a commute bag.Able to be inserted in any type of locksBuilt with a safe way to prevent unwanted switch on (to avoid burning bags/pockets/houses...Lol)Able to produce enough heat to defrost the lock Rechargeable would be best (USB best best), capacity of 5mn maybe to operate twice a day...Reasonably quick to unfreeze the lock, so you don t freeze yourself (That s why I abandon using hot pouches around the lock, pouring hot water will fix it quickly but then it will freeze again)As I said, I don t have the skills to even begin to find a solution, but I saw a lot of smart stuff here and I am curious to see what you guys would answer to that. My guess is that it must be very difficult, if not I can t see why a similar product is not widely commercialized. I think a lot of people would buy it.Thanks for the reading, I hope I picked your interest. Have a good day.

Car, Cold, Ice, Snow and Wipers and better defrosting question

So if you live in a state that gets snow and ice one area you can never seem to get all the ice off, or the area that seems to build up ice easily is your wipers. Now my idea is like the rear window, when you turn on the defroster it warms up wires inside of the window that melts and defrostes the snow/ice/frost etc. A. Any ideas how I would make something like that, where I could turn on a switch that would be hooked to the battery with a fuse in the line where I could some how coil the wire around or under the wiper to melt the ice on the blade and in the area where the wipers are "stored" when turned off. B. Any different ideas then the one above?C. Any ways to make a roll of plastic or something with the wires held in place? All thoughts, ideas, diagrams and explanations welcome =)

Tips or products you recommend for clearing or preventing ice in winter?

My partner and I just bought a house and we're doing some repairs and upgrades. One of the major things I want to focus on is making our front entrance less icy. Most of the time we're covered in snow, but whenever it warms up briefly we end up with an icy disaster on the front porch the next morning. :P Currently, the roof melt runs right off onto our front steps and it's a mess! (see picture for the icicle death trap)I have been using a "pet-safe" ice melt (we have two dogs who are in and out all day) but it doesn't do enough for how much I go through. I still break up the ice in the morning when using the ice melt because the ice builds up really quickly. Are there gutters strong enough to handle heavy snowfall? Some sort of heating element I could install? For reference, I'm in northern CO in the mountains and we tend to get feet of snowfall every winter! I've never lived somewhere with this much snow, but I'm hoping some of you do and can offer some suggestions :D

How to keep door ajar for winter. Cat keeps opening it.

Winter is approaching in Australia. I work in my home office and my computers and sometimes heater [or bread machine :)] keep the office warm. My cat likes to visit for a scratch several times a day. For this, the door must be openable otherwise i have to let the cat in and out. I have been keeping the door nearly closed which keeps the warmth in. However, my cat arrives and virtually bashes it open. The heat in the room is sucked out within minutes if I am distracted by work enough to not close the door ajar on entry or exit of cat. How can I add an upgrade to the door which will keep it closed-ajar if a cat or human uses the door. I would like to solution that can be disabled as in summer I would like the door to be open (which is working and does not need a solution to keep it open). The door is on equal balance (if that makes sense) and I would not like to modify the door hinges. (I had attached an image but must not have enough trust with this site for it to display). The door is a colonial door if you see pictures on google images.
