Just have a little problem that im sure a lot of you have the answer... I try to put a Nichrome wire on come copper wire but the copper wire is always burning (when the Nichrome get red and hot [really need its ^^])so i lose the connection between the Nihrome wire and the copper wire....What should i do? use big fat copper wire?

Hey folks, need some ideas to build a simple wire insulation removal system. Has to be so I can peel the inulation off wire from 10 gauge to the ribbon wire in computers as the only way to do it now is burn at that is not a good idea.

Hey everyone, I use EL Wires to make small neon signs and I've never had any problems with them until I started shipping them places. I have no idea how to fix these things and one of my customers told me the wire is detached from the transformer. Is this fixable?

I was trying to make a foam cutter so I connected a 4 inch long piece of nichrome wire in series with 4 D batteries and the wire got very hot. My batteries became worn out and I replaced them with a 9 volt eveready battery but it didn't heat up. I tried shortening the wire up to just a centimeter but still nothing happened. I was wondering if current is even passing through the wire so i wired an electric motor in series with the nichrome wire and the battery, and the motor was spinning. I also tried using two 9 volt batteries in series and in parallel but still nothing happened. I am really confused.. why can't 9 volts and 18 volts heat up the wire while 6 volts(4 d batteries) can??I connected the two 9 volt batteries in parallel too but why didn't it work?

If you have say 2 inch or better diameter copper wire to strip here is what I do. I have ben in the scrap arena for years. Buy a large handeled pair of shears that are only for copper. They will look much like a large pair of boltcutters. Cut your insulated wire into about two foot lenghts. Get a large pot, the bigger the better and heat with an out door propane burner full of water. Place the cut sticks of wire into the boiling water fro about five min. Get some insulated rubber gloves and a sharp razor knofe and you will find that the plastic insulation carves away like butter. This works on everykind of insulated wire I have come across. With lead wrapped insulated wire, get a plasma torch. It cutts easily and is so fast the plastic wire inside does not have time to catch on fire. Use plenty of ventilation to avoid breathing lead based fumes.

How about someone come up with another use for all the wire coat hangers I have lying around? I am quite sure I am not the only person that has this problem, and I am equally sure there are WAY many more intelligent inventors out there that could give me a lot of projects to do! Thanks!

I am trying to use some wire for radiant floor heating to warm an area. I have a separate way to turn the current on/ off without a thermostat. I just need to know what the thermostat output is. I have 110 and 220 V AC outputs available. Do I need to convert this to DC?

Hey folks, I just submitted my first set of instructions to the site. I was hoping I could get some feedback before posting the next one. If you could let me know what you think, it would be most appreciated. Good, Bad, the Ugly, what have you. https://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-make-a-wire-octopus-sculpture-simplified/ I'm mostly interested in how the information is received. If the instructions are clear, if the pictures help, if anything is missing, etc.

Hi! Anybody out there can give me an idea how to construct something of this nature for a wall inside my shop. I run a hair shop for young people. I am short on budget but I need something that can create some drama or 'wows'. Any suggestions? - Laurie

OK, so here it is. I make my own from scratch soap.....yes the kind made with lye (you canNOT have soap without a strong alkaline like LYE....period, but that's for another time) My DH is VERY handy, and can build a lot of things. I want him to build me a soap cutter that uses strong wire to do the cutting. There are soap cutters for sale on line, but with his talent I refuse to pay WELL over $100 to buy one, when for quite a bit less he can make me one. My thought is that maybe piano wire would work, guitar strings (or are they covered with something?) or whatever type of wire used in some cheese slicers. I prefer it not be too hard to locate, and not too expensive. I would like to be able to cut a whole "loaf" of soap into bars all at one time, so they are all the exact same size. Any ideas? Here is a BIG cutter, but it might give you an idea http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5aRQOQQboZc Thanks Mary

Hi, Can anyone answer a few questions for me or direct me to a site for Nichrome information? My background: I'm more into mechanical tinkering: drill press, saw, lathe. I have minimal skills in Arduino. I have very little understanding in Ohm, Resistance, etc....many things electrical. I can read an electrical schematic and build it; but, I have no clue how to design it. My purpose for this: heating panel for vacuum form machine as well as a curing plate on top of wet paint and coating (two different machines). I'm trying to make this: http://www.infraredheaters.com/solar-f.htm <--- something like this with it's blown air as a convection-like dryer over water base coating. My requirement is: 1, 120v prefer, highly desire. 220v isn't an option at the moment until I move to a new place. 2, +250-350f temp range, I'll be using an Arduino to set this up 3, 14" x 18" panel 4, as efficient as possible, I want it as close to 1000watt as practically possible. My questions are: size of nichrome? length? How tightly should I pack the wires. Should I use a dimmer switch to control the heat? would that be a good idea? Where can I find information to get 120v AC into nichrome to give me 330f without killing myself or burning down the house? Thanks!

Starting soon, very soon, here on Instructables will be an EL wire contest! We'll be giving away hundreds of dollars worth of EL wire to the best ideas! In case you don't know, electroluminescent wire, EL wire, is a plastic-coated wire that glows when current is run through it. It comes in many colors, can be powered by batteries, can be used in costumes, and can create animations when controlled by a sequencer. It's really, really fun to play with. To get to know more about EL wire, here are a few Instructables to help you out: how to add EL wire to a coat or other garment How to Solder EL (Electroluminescent) Wire Fire Skirt! I'm hunting for fine, non-kink wire or conductive thread. It needs to be coated since I intend to twist two wires together, stripping the coating where I attach an LED. I like the silver/gold colors of the wire, so I want something clear coated. Or if anybody knows of a coating solution that I could apply to my wire/thread, that would work also. Thanks.

Do you ever see those roses at the gas stations that are made of ribbon? the kind of ribbon that's sort of shear and has wire for the edges? I remember getting a closer look at it and seeing that the stem was wire as well and wrapped with shear non wire edged ribbon, but i have no clue as to how to make it.... I've been curious for a while but i don't think buying one and ripping it apart to see how it ticks would be exactly sufficient... could someone please make an instructable on this?

I'm looking for a very thin, non-conductive, copper wire. Although I've been told this is impossible to find and wicked hard to make, so something clear coated would also be acceptable, but I want an ultra fine gauge. I also want it to be solderable. Anybody know where I can find some?

I have a box with 4 cables coming in. found one cable with power on white and black wire. I have connected all the white wires together and the black and the ground now with the hot wires i placed the white/hot wire on the top of the switch. don't know what to do with that black one, I have tried putting a black pigtail on the bottom and it lets me turn the light on but turning it off it's still on but dimmer. None of the wires are labeled and you can't tell where they go. this "box" had two outlets one to the hall light and one to outside which wasn't really working. and then it goes to the kitchen as well as the bathroom light and two of the three bedrooms, one on each end of house. Can someone help me figure this out, I have blown some breakers and i even had this "pretty" light flash when testing which wire is what. Thanks to anyone who can help. please send info to firstname.lastname@example.org

I have a sonyericsson handsfree connector that I would like to use on a phone that takes a 3.5 plug. The hands free is nice because there is a 3.5 female jack where the mic is so that I can use the earphones of my choice yet still be able to use the mic. I snipped off the sony ericsson connector and found 5 'threads': 2 'threads' seem like actual cotton threads (one red and one blue), 2 seem like very thin sheathed copper wire, and one seems like unsheathed copper wires. I have a 3.5 male plug that I would like to connect them to but do not know how. I've held the 2 sheathed wires stripped and unsheathed copper wires to the plug while its been plugged in but hear nothing. Is it possible to connect up these wires to the jack so that it will work? Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

I have a desk near my bed with the power strip on the other side of the desk. There's also my keyboard on the desk, so I have no problems in making the wires of my PC, phone, MP3 and 3DS chargers pass behind it so that they are hidden from view. I generally place my PC on the back of the keyboard and charge it, then everything else on top of either it or the keyboard. However, the things on the keyboard are quite ugly to the eye, while on the PC they clog. Also, it's always a pain to take the wire of the right charger (expecially in the dark), given that they are longer than the length of the desk, and if I roll them up they take up too much space. I was thinking of doing something to place those things on the side of the desk and fix the cables there. The problem is, I don't want to drill holes or anything like that, so I'm gonna stick with physics-fixed stuff or tape. What could I do that wouldn't be too bad to the eye?

When I read up on the coils used in power generation, I found that the wire used is a type of magnet copper wire, and I bought 1600 feet of it on ebay. My only problem now is winding the coil. I figure I can do something like wrap it a few hundred times around a pole thats slightly larger than the rare earth disc magnets I got. Anyone have any suggestions? Btw, most of my information is adapted from normal rotating wind power generators.

I have disassembled an old vacuum cleaner that runs on 240v/5amps/1200w. I wanted to obtain the electric motor that should perform at 1.5 horsepower. As I was taking it apart I forgot how the switch leads were originally configured. I want to give the motor a test run but I don't want to hit the fuse in my house so I was hoping someone can help me plug the switch in the normal configuration. What order do the brown and blue plugs (that comes from wall plug) fit into the switch? And what order do the blue plugs (goes to motor) fit into the switch? A silly question really but I am new to working with electronics.

I am trying to fix my headphones - the connection to the jack got a little damaged from using it over time. so i cut the existing jack off of the cable. the cable is stranded wire, so i'm having an awful time identifying which is left, right and ground. i will try to post a picture soon.

My place of employment is currently trying to clean out a warehouse full of stuff they don't use, and I've been given permission to have a yard sale! I thought some of it could be used by the Instructables community to craft something amazing. First thing up for grabs is lots of (mostly) steel wire. Price is negotiable. Make me an offer or it gets dumped in the recycle bin in a few weeks. I have lots of different stuff to get rid of some of the more useful stuff might appear here (I got some aluminum squares of various sizes that could go). email email@example.com or PM here. I am going to be hand-wiring up a large lot of transformers. Someone has told me there is an enameled wire (magnet wire) whose coating melts when you dip it in solder (also tinning the copper tip at the same time). What is this type of wire called? I am having a hard time searching for it. Thanks!

I'm making this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jLia59KfkSw It says to get magnet wire and 12 gauge paired AWG wire. Home depot said they didn't have it. Can I reuse any wire from lamps that I plan to get rid of? I found magnet wire on ebay but which one do I choose? http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_odkw=12+awg+paired+wire&_osacat=0&_from=R40&_trksid=p2045573.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0.H0.Xmagnet+wire+enameled.TRS0&_nkw=magnet+wire+enameled&_sacat=0 Is this the 12 AWG wire? http://www.ebay.com/itm/10-feet-12-AWG-Twisted-Pair-Silver-Plated-Cable-speaker-wire-37-strands-/381386615431?hash=item58cc69ea87:g:AHwAAOSw0JpV6JGw or this? http://www.ebay.com/itm/12AWG-12-AWG-Silicone-Wire-Pair-50cm-500mm-Black-Red-/331063916087?hash=item4d14f27637:g:AeoAAOxyDLZSChf9 Videomom

I am interested in a circuit to interface an RS232 to a special 12 volt ONE-WIRE circuit. It is special because it is an controller used in industry. So I have a MAX3232 to convert my Arduino to RS232 levels, but that will get me to 2 wires. I need to be able to make that into a ONE-Wire at 12 volt levels (not 3-5 etc) . I see the MAXIM circuit (attached) for converting to one-wire at lower levels, but can't find anything to utilize a 12 volt one-wire level. Hope I am being clear and thanks for your assistance.

When i make a coil with magnet wire,i have enamelled wire, do i have to sand the whole thing so the copper touches in the coil, or just the ends going to where im hooking it up? EDIT: i changed my title, because i have more questions about coil guns in general.

Hey, I was doing a quick search on ebay and found this. Its cheap el wire. The best part is its orange,(Clemson Stuff). I got some nichrome wire off eBay, and it works great but when I connected it to a 9 volt battery it barley got hot, then I attached it to 4 x AA batteries and it got red hot. why is this? I don't understand because the 9 volt gives out 9 volts(duh) , but the 4x AA batteries only gives out 6 volts.

I recently took a class on El Wire and got a hold of some to play with, so I pretty much know what I'm doing with it. It seems, though that the creative juices have stopped flowing and I can't seem to come up with a way to combine it with anything steampunk. I just figured I'd throw it out there and maybe start up a discussion. Thoughts / ideas?

I know I'm probably going to sound like an idiot for asking, but can magnet wire release any toxic fumes when heated? I made a speaker using a magnet-wire coil and a neo-magnet, and when I plug it into the amp, I realized the coil gets very hot. I was expecting this, for I've used a number of coils in other projects. There is an odor, no doubt, that comes from every coil I've used when making an electromagnet. Sure, the smell may come from the iron nail being heated, but I always associate the smell with the coil. I'm not willing to smell this speaker, however. So, is there any risks that come from the heating of magnet wire? The coil gets hot after about a minute of run-time, but I'd like to be able to run through an entire album of music (an hour?) if possible. Thanks!
