changing the segmented green progress bar in xp

How can someone change the unattractive segmented green progress bar in windows xp to the solid green progress bar in Vista. The solid green color looks much better than the thin white vertical line that is in each of the green segements of the xp progress bar [ie. the loading indicator status bar]. WWW.projectcode.com has a written text program for changing it and includes an explanation for each line of the program. There is also a free download of the source code but the adobe 8 reader on my computer says it is unable to open the files.Does anyone know of any other links that offer the program?

I have a question about the XP professional OS

This is my question: The other day, well Friday actually, I was at work and accidentally hit the Down arrow key (beside the numeric pad) while I had been pressing down Ctl & Alt. The entire screen flipped upsidedown ! What POSSIBLE use could this be to anyone? It is cool if you have someone else that uses the same computer and you want to really freak them out, but I have not been able to discover any real purpose for this. Anyone else have a clue? Although the image I have put here is NOT my own, it is certainly equivalent.

Dual boot

I am looking towards creating a dual boot scenario on my computer (XP, and Ubuntu) and I am in need of a bit of assistance. Some background and foundation: Present OS = XP SP2The main partition is NTFS, however the "backup" partition is FAT(16 or 32, I am not sure)Now, to my main question: I realize I can partition this further so I can have a dual boot situation, but I am worried about losses that may occur. I haven't had much time lately to read up on the process, but I have seen warnings about loss of data files, etc. and my being cautious to a fault, I haven't proceeded any further in my quest. So, what precautions should I take, and what is going to be the process I need to follow to get to where I want to be?

Making Microtek ScanMaker 3600 Works in XP Pro !

I am moving my old scanner Microtek ScanMaker 3600 over to a new PC which runs XP Pro. However, the software (ScanWizard 5) doesn't "see" the scanner, although the PC "sees" it ! I have been fiddling with this thing for over 2 days now and still no result. The scanner does work. The XP Pro OS on the new PC "sees" the scanner, it's only the software that refuse to see it. I suspect it has something to do with the TWAIN driver on the XP. How to hack the stuffs??

Upgraded to XP

I gave Microsoft until SP1 for vista, I tried to like it, but lets count the annoyances. SLOW, even with all the twaddle turned off. 2 minutes to boot, five before wireless would connect. Disk copy at a snails pace. 12 minutes to write a one gig usb 2.0 jump drive 10 gig restore partition. 10 gig win sxs folder being repeatedly told "you need permission to do that" on my explicative deleted computer even after turning UAC off. Enoughs enough Now I'm running XP Fast 45 seconds from power on to connected to the network 7 gigs total install 2 minutes to copy one gig to a jumpdrive. Make the upgrade, it's worth it.

windows XP login password problems

I have never been prompted to enter a username or password to login to my PC computer running windows XP since I purchased my computer 4-6- years ago. I had it unplugged for about 2 weeks while I moved recently. When I plugged it back in, it prompted me for a password and since I never had one or set up the computer to use one to login, its impossible to use the computer or login. I would appreciate any help with this that doesn't require formatting the hard drive. I also don't understand why windows all of a sudden asked me for a password and won't let me login without one or at least run me through the process of setting up one since I never had to use one for this computer.

Possible bug

I keep getting this popup that only happens on Instructables.com it doesn't matter which Instructable I am looking at when it occurs. I thought it might just be my PC but it has happened on other PCs outside of my own system and house. After it happens explorer goes blank and I have to hit the back button, and sometimes it happens again and sometimes I return to the page. This happens frequently. is this happening to anyone else? (I know I know use Firefox, but I get a Java error with that one.)

What did I just do?

If any of you out there who know lots about how the inside of my computer works could tell me what in the world I just did, that would be wonderful! Here's what I did: I clicked Start, clicked run, and typed 'CMD'. Command prompt opened up and I typed 'At (I put the time it would be 1 minute from when I typed it) /interactive "cmd.exe" After the minute went by a new command prompt opened up. I typed 'exit' in the old one. I did ctrl-alt-delete and ended the process 'explorer.exe'. After I killed that I typed 'cd ..' in the command prompt window, then I typed 'explorer.exe' and it opened back up. On my home computer I was signed in as SYSTEM at this point and on the computers in the computer labs at the community college I was logged in as the same user name as before except with a '$' on the end. At this point I appear to have privileges above an admin profile and I can access and edit all sorts of files and things I know an admin can't normally access. I can also do things to profiles, like give them admin privileges. I haven't figured out how to do this without setting the time I want it to start a minute ahead of the time it was when I typed it.... Is it possible? And I know the 'cd ..' brings me up a directory, why am I able to do this with explorer.exe closed? It appears to be a large security hole... I just want to know how/what just happened! Thanks! -DMC

How to install Windows XP IN PLACE OF Android on a phone

I have a Moto E first gen smartphone and a copy of Windows XP lying around, and I was wondering if it would be possible to install XP in place of Android on it. I don't want to run XP on top of Android, I want to erase Android and make XP the only OS on the device. Is this possible? And yes, I know it wouldn't really be useful for anything, it's just for fun.

Laptop Password Help

OK, so I'm typing on this laptop...It was assigned to Kitewife by an ex employer who seems to have forgotten they assigned it to her several years ago.If they ever ask for it back, we will happily hand it back, but they treated Kitewife very badly for quite some time before she left, so we have forgotten that we have it.Anyhoo, it works OK, little slow, but fine for the boys to use. Except that it's software hasn't been updated for at least three years. There are whole chunks of the internet that are invisible to it. The Flash, Java, Adobe, even the anti-virus are stupidly out of date.Unfortunately, the laptop has an admin password. Now, I could ask Kitewife's ex employer what the password is, but they might remember that she has it.So...Any ideas?I've had a look at the various password "hack" ibles, but they haven't been any help.

Dual Boot

I was following the instructions on apcmag for dual booting XP and Vista with Vista installed first and ran into a problem. Once I had gotten to the part about adding an entry for XP to easybcd I got stuck. The drive letter selection was grayed out. I added XP to the list anyway, and went into change settings. I set XP to the correct drive letter there, but when I rebooted and selected XP from the menu, I got a ntldr error immediately. Any help would be much appreciated.

Pictures On Firefox

It seems I cannot change the pictures on Instructables. I am running windows xp pro Service pack 3 on a fairly powerful Machine. I am running Firefox 9.0.1 with the latest versions of all major plugins (flash, java, wmp, vlc, etc...). However when I go onto any instructable, it seems I cannot change the pictures by clicking on the thumbnails... Tried it on about 50 different instructables, all have the same problem, tried everything i could think of to fix (disabling all extensions, restarting browser, restarting computer) EDIT: Seems only to affect Firefox, other browsers are working fine...

Can I run Ubuntu Linux DIRECTLY from a flashdrive?

I want to download Ubuntu Linux onto a flashdrive, and then be able to plug that into a computer(running Windows XP) and run off of Linux from the flashdrive. Can I do this? As in, I plug the flashdrive into the computer, then restart it. After it reboots, it starts up in Ubuntu, then just runs on Ubuntu like it would on a computer that normally runs on it. But instead of using the computer's hard drive, it stores on the flashdrive. Then, when I'm done, I can shut down the computer, unplug the flashdrive, and then when I boot the computer back up, it runs off of Windows XP like it normally would, like nothing happened. How would I do this? Is there a special distro of Linux I would have to do this on, or would it work just normally on Ubuntu? I would prefer not to partition the hard drive.

Comment Tracker Bug

Whenever I go to instructables, the first thing I do is check to see if I have any new comments. For some reason, there are always these odd question marks in diamonds right in the middle of the comments. This has happened since I joined instructables back in may 2008, I just haven't poster about it until now.. Any ideas as to why this happens? I use Firefox version 3.5.7 on one computer running Windows 7 Home Premium, and 3.5.9 on another computer running Windows XP Home Edition SP3. It seems that it happens on whatever computer I use, although I haven't tried on Macs yet. See the computer for the example.

OS Opinions?

Update! What is the EASIEST distro to learn Linux with? Also, where can I find some Linux tutorials? I'm looking for tutorials written in layman's terms, not a bunch of command line junk ;]......Yeah, I know... we have too many computers...So basically, I rounded up all our old PCs to see what's worth keeping. So far, I've completely restored 2 of them back to day one. One of them was already running XP, the other was running 98, so I installed XP on it. The one that came with XP I decided to "Vista-ize" using CharredPC's WinXP Overhaul Guide. Check out my pics, and then make sure you check out his I'ble, I definately reccomend it.Anyway, down to business. Okay, so 1 machine is running XP in the guise of Vista. I like it so far. But what about the other four? Well, let's not get too carried away. I know that at least one other works, so let's get started with that...I want to make the other working PC to run some sort of Linux. Probably Ubuntu, based on research thus far. But, what better way to get feedback then from the Instructables community? So what do you guys think? Which version of Linux do you like best? Which ones can I make look like Vista, XP, or Mac OS X?As for the other three PCs... one of them I want to gut and salvage parts to make a NES PC for my brother (okay, I might use it too...) I'll probably get a version of Linux for that, too; maybe DSL.

windows xp death

My sister tried to log on her dell computer today but all she got is as far as the windows xp loading page then it it just froze all she has is a blue bar top and bottom of the screen and a light blue background like the screen where the user accounts pop up. anyway a friend tried recovery discs for xp but it kept asking for an windows administrator pasword and even though we typed i  the password for the administrator account we set up it says not valid  password entered, apparently the hardware is fine just needs software repaired.  how can i fix the software without the password and keeping the data on the system as i cannot get in to back it up and she has emails with her visa applications for her honeymoon on it. please help if you can

Windows 7 truely sucks

I put Windows 7 pro on my gaming PC, oh my god, it sucks so damn bad! Good thing I dual booted with Vista, I have no clue what everybody was thinking when they said it was good! Every 10 minutes, blue screen on death. Tried everything, removing ram, taking out the video card, changing the power supply, plugging it straight into the wall with out the battery back up, nothing worked, so I booted Vista and it worked great, had it on for 2 days so far. And yes, my computer is very compatible with 64-bit. Windows 7 had a 10 minute maximum. Windows Vista just works, I just wish it had XP mode.

XP pro hardware drivers: library, cache for system when detecting new hardware

Where in the XP Pro OS (operating system) can place all the drivers needed when plug and play starts detecting new hardware? Background: I am currently overseas and the home computer my wife normally uses has crapped out on her. She sent me the HDD (hard disk drive) and I will install XP Pro along with all the applications, but this time will create an image onto the hard drive so she can recover if she needs to (Acronis Image). I was lucky enough to run a driver program that picked up all my drivers (Ghostdriver? program) before I left home and have the drivers the system will need once I send it back to my wife and she installs it. I believe that some of the hardware drivers are located in C:\Windows\System32\drivers but am not sure if this is the only place or if I can just "drop" my copy of drivers into this and have the system pick them up as it "discovers" it's new hardware. I do realize that she may have to reactivate the Microsoft XP Pro license and she can handle that (we also do have a legit copy of WXPPro). Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, TJ I am glad I asked, I did not think about the the possible driver conflicts. I will try both the CD and Driver Magician. Thanks!
