Facebook - some things to consider before making full use of it....

As "A last Hurray" so to say I will do it one last time....What am I doing exactly you wonder and why do I bother writing it here?I will write a little story that is spiked with some information that I deem to be worthy to share. And I do bother to show my friends, followers and those who care what might have been a weekly or even daily thing otherwise :)At work recent changes and ongoing problems with our IT systems required that those who need contact with those in charge or above to sign up with Facebook.I tried what I could but Emails appearently don't always show if someone actually ready them and it was down to keeping my job or refusing Facebook. And yes, I tried to raise my concerns about privacy and control of it through the company...Anyway, let us start, shall we?Signing up for Facebook is as easy as asking Google for the name and to follow the obvious links. But those who know me can confirm that I take privacy seriously and that I like to question why someone thinks they need certain information.Which brings me to the point....Anyone these days is on Facebook with one or more accounts - this includes your boss, manager or anyone interested in your name, resume or other background info.Facebook provides just that, the chat and messages are as obsolete as anything else in terms of actually giving you privacy of any kind. When I signed up and was dumb enough to use a well known Email provider for my account details, I was shocked by the following offer.I was asked for my Email password to make signing in and finding friends easier!A quick but endlessly long search through the terms and conditions confirmed that indeed everyone in my contact list would be mis-used for data collecting and referencing - including the content of my Emails.Of course I had to reject this great function several times until Facebook got the massage that I like to keep control over my Email account.Thinking this was already enough for the day I rejected images and other private info, like where I was born, where I worked and such before signing off.Next day I suddenly had a list of friends as long as the shopping list of a childcare centre for thanks giving. At first I though I don't know any of them until I started to do what Facebook wants and looked the people up.Most where contacts I had on long dead messengers like the Yahoo! messenger. You can understand my confusion until I realised I had used the same Emal account for those messengers.Facebook simply reference their records of dead systems with my Email address and was happy to provide friends I really tried to avoid....The hardest hit however was when I realised that even contact backups I did from my mobile, using Google services, appeared.Thankfully most as possible friends but some directly added to my friends list, due to other links they found in their databases.Needless to say that even several of my skype contacts showed up...The last thing that confirmed why I avoided Facebook was the simple fact that all privacy options in the profile are set by default to public!Of course, if you don't mind stripping down your privacy to the entire world while Facebook is using the data for not always legal purposes you shall be fine. But if you only care a little then check the following, hopefully before stripping down:1. Never, ever type your Email password into anything coming from Facebook - no matter what reasons they claim!2. Before you complete your profile with address, phone number or similar, type in nonsense so you can get access to your account settings. After all Facebook does not bother to offer you privacy before you finnish your details and keeps nagging about adding more so they get the vital data they need first....3. Check all account settings in regards who has access!Unless you really want to strip down noone but your friends should have any access to anything. And even for that you should make sure to enable the function to review them before you allow them to show up on your page, history or elsewhere.Things to always keep in mind:1. Your account is not yours as Facebook has all rights to it, you can not even request to have your informations deleted from their databases or remove your account for good.2. Anything your friends see on your page or profile they can share, like or comment on.This means that even if don't like it, it can spread through the community within seconds and as a worst case ruin your life.3. Anything Facebook does or offers, like games, recommendations, things you should know about, have only one goal: To gather more information about you.Like for example using your Google cookies to find out what search for on the web or watch on Youtube....4. Things you like attract more things you might like, again mostly to gather more info about you, your personality, preferences and your friends.Ok, I know! You are using FB for years, have tons of friends there and keep updated about every minute of their life they share...So there is little to no chance to see what I am talking about LOLBut I would not post all this openly without a backup plan ;)If you really dare to challenge me on this then you might have to waste several hours of your precious time, but I think it is worth your time! This is how the game is played:1. Find someone older who does have a vital Email life of sorts but so far no use for Facebook.2. Ask kindly for his support on a test with Facebook that might require him to forawrd correspnding Emails to your account.3. Clearly state that neither his email or FB account will be used to post anything, add friends manually or give out any info the person does not feel confortable to share.4. Point out the possible benefits of having FB with the option to use the persons real name so he can continue using FB after the test if considered a good thing to have.5. If you manage the above successfully then only use the provided name, email and residential address to create a new account.6. Observe and wonder about the things to come.....You will notice that usually quite soon possible friends or persons that could be connected show up.Also that FB will continue to ask about the history, like schools, work, places. If you do an online search on the name often takes less than a week to get a hit refering to FB.The more info about the person you offer FB (with consent!!) the more people will show up to be considered. At this stage and I guess in less than two weeks time after creating the account comes the question about how to continue.Show the person what and who is already present in the created account and if there is an interest to keep the acount for personal use.If so, kindly ask the person to add a friend or more, fill out more details, provide a picture and so on.Hand over full control to the account either by asking the person to change the password and not let you see or know it.Again, ask kindly to get some future updates, screenshot or similar to see how the account evolve, or add yourself as a friend and keep track that way.I do not suggest in any way to create an account without consent! This includes all activities that might seem harmless:Don't use the identity of someone you "found somewhere"!Don't create a fake account, especially not in the name of someone popular or someone that might be harmed in any way by your creation - the person might have good reasons not to appear on FB!If you don't have Facebook already feel free to use to do the test with your own details!Never, ever use pictures that are not your own or that you don't have the explicit permission to use even if you took them!

Help us help others.

In the new format, it is pretty tough to find actual questions. We get actual questions and topics mixed together with things like:"Kindly Could you please mail me the schematic?Thank you for sending" This is addressed solely to the author of a specific -ible. It's a lot of fun to help those people who dont know where to start on their project. But it is almost impossible to find those in the sea of responses to specific -ibles.Please consider fixing this so we can help folks who dont know "how to"thx

How can I join two pieces of cedar to make a work bench?

I have two pieces of 2x10 S1SE2 cedar that I want to join to make the top of a work bench. I'm assuming I'll have to cut off one side of each board so I can either do a butt joint or a miter joint, but I wondering about if those joints will be strong enough to hold up without any other supports. Perhaps a biscuit joint would provide more?

Good bye my friends and subscribers

Due the still ongoing problems with the last site update I decided to extend my "holidays" from this website. Those who know me will also know that I always tried to asnwer questions to my projects quickly.Same for all those seeking help in the community forum but I am simply not willing to waste more time searching and fixing than actually answering. If things here change back to a usable forum and once user requests are at least considered by Autodesk feel free to ask me to come back.Until then I will have to find other things to do with my time.In the meantime I might still check on questions to my Instructables but not on a regular base.

2 months delay in discussion notifications

My "Discussions" tab showed no changes for about two months, and then yesterday it dumped about two months of replies that people had made on my various comments I made on the forums here. I think that qualifies as a bug. I mean, ideally my "Discussions" tab would notifiy me of replies in a matter of hours, so I could reply to those replies in a timely fashion, if it was the sort of thing where someone was expecting a reply from me.I am guessing this problem was maybe related to the recent big "improvements" to the site, to make it more readable for mobile lusers, and other changes to make the site more comment-able, question-able, tip-able, by everyone.Just wondering: Has anyone else experienced this same problem, i.e. a several weeks, or months, delay in notifications of replies to your comments?

Adding to Collections

Just wanted to post some feedback. After being away from Instructables for a while, I was trying to figure out how to add an 'ible to my collection, and had to google the answer. I hadn't even noticed the dot menu until that point, even after scrolling up and down the page and refreshing a few times. This process could be made more transparent.

Potential $5 RC Hovercraft

Hey y'all, I was bored, so I made this RC hovercraft, kinda like a Tiny Whoov, from the guts of a $5 RC helicopter (sold at most FiveBelows). The idea is that a hovercraft is more fun than a cruddy helicopter, in addition to being a fun and easy DIY project for the weekend. It could be a nice gift to a kid. My first concern was that the motors would not provide enough power to get the thing moving. They give more than enough power, and this thing can MOVE. My second concern is that the differential thrust steering system (one motor turns faster than the other, steering the hovercraft) would not be effective enough. This is still a problem that I don't have the enthusiasm or time to solve anymore. Maybe someone could figure out how to reprogram the FC board to have more differential thrust (is that possible?), or somehow configure a servo or actuator without raising the cost of materials too much. Anyway, here's the concept, go have fun with it.Supplies:Foam platesHot glue$5 RC helicopter with 2 motors and receiver (LED optional, but really cool)Connector (the battery might be soldered directly to the FC board, so this will make it easier to fiddle with)Soldering iron (not %100 necessary, but it can come in handy)Propellers (see design notes)Design notes:Notice how the underside of the hull is curved and smooth. I used propellers from a Blade Inductrix FPV Pro, but any micro quad propellers should work. Notice the nice little compartment under the FC board where you can stick a battery without the need for Velcro or glue. This would be a very easy FPV mod, but that would add about $20 to the cost.

Glitches with the Instructables Editor

While trying to make Instructables with the Editor, I have come across two glitches (if this is not the place to report bugs and errors, please inform me).1. The text boxes for the Intro and the Steps editors refuse to let me copy/paste anything into them. The pasted text appears for a split second, then disappears.2. The same thing happens with links. I type in a URL and the text for the link, press OK, will show up for a split second then disappear.I hope this helps to make Instructables a better place.

Building: wireless monitor/tablet recycling old laptop parts

Please be positive and constructive with your questions and comments.Building wireless touchscreen ar1100 to bluetooth transmitte by Fearlessleader on Tue Mar 20, 2018 5:04 am Hi I have 15.4 samsung laptop screen I am converting to 4 wire touch overlay and want to us the ar1100 but need to go from the usb out bluetooth wireless mouse transmitter. I would need the same type of transmitter like any bluetooth mouse would have inside. The mini pc I am building has both bluetooth and wireless display.Parts list so far15.4 samsung screen pulled from a Dell laptop modle LTN154W1-L01Control board for the screen with hdmi ebay 30$ link https://www.ebay.com/itm/HDMI-DVI-VGA-LCD-Lvds-Con.. 12v 3 amp power supply for the screen controler I already have but later I would build voltage control unit that would charge or power the whole unit. Again YouTube has videos and links for the part for this. And I really don't want to have a bunch a supplies to run it. While prototype it I will the final will run from the laptop I got the screen from. It should plenty of power for a single board computer like the new pi 3 to be added and the audio amp15.4 4 wire overlay conversion many sorce's about 50$ link https://www.ebay.com/itm/15-4inch-4-Wire-Film-to-F... $Ar1100 touch to usb mouse adafuit 10$ link https://www.adafruit.com/product/1580Hdmi wireless receiver. 20 to 40$ depending on features like if it has chromecasting and such I just need video so I think the 20$ unit will do nice. These can be found in many places, so I would think this to be open end item depending on features the builder wants. I would buy the best you can afford to leave it fexible .The last thing I need to make work would be usb transmitter to make the ar1100 bluetooth or matched pair of 2.4 dongles usb this is the only item missing. I could test the whole set up but would have run 1 usb cable, but that's a deal breaker for full wireless... If I had a old bluetooth mouse and knew how take its transmitter out, that work but a bluetooth usb adapter the would plug in the ar1100 board would be the thing I need.If someone would know how to remove the mouse transmitter and wire it to male usb plug I would be happy to buy it. I real want this to made from as much recycled parts as possible.I just don't want to have run a usb cable from ar1100 to the pc.I don't think the same usb dongle that's used to the pc is the same as the one used in every bluetooth mouse or keyboard. That's my idea for a wireless touchscreen handheld All the parts are easy to get I just need make the ar1100 usb board and wireless usb transmitter. The pc would use GA-h77n-wifi mini itx as it has both bluetooth & wireless display and wifi.Part 2The idea sound lol! I want to build a frame for the screen with speakers and laptop battery and used the power supply from the Dell laptop I got the screen from, that would need a small amp. Since the receiver is hdmi, I would think the audio would be there if not that would be simple to just use a bluetooth stereo headphones and run the earphone wires to the small audio amp.I would like any comments on this idea and a sorce the one part that missing the usb mouse transmitter for the ar1100 and this could be built. So What do you folks think? A portable monitor 100% wireless that could even double as touchscreen remote! I even thought down the road to add the new pi 3 to it as that would completely independent as low power tablet or connect to the pc that nvidia gpu and could stream pc games to My Nvidia shield too. With all the power of I7 2700k oc to 4.2ghz.The possibilities here are endless you and all kinds a features adding a mic and Webcam for video calls with sckype or google voice and messenger and bingo u have a voice and video over IPThis do able you think? All comments good or bad give to me straight.Oh but go easy on the grammar thing. I technology geek but a 56 year old high school drop out. But hay at 37 I was disabled with fractured spine by time I was 40 I did all computers repairs for my local high school and was building white box computers out of my home office. If there is 1 thing I have learned in this life anything is possible but you have to try! Please be positive and constructive with your questions and comments.

What instructables does for me.

Just a quick word to say Thanks to everyone who contribute to this site.I work as a teacher in a max-sec prison and I have to produce a lot of my classes with a very limited acces to the web. Luckily, I can acces this page.Instructables has given me a lot ideas and explanations that I have been able to use in my work - and that is all down to the people taking their time to make pictures and produce text to explain stuff to the rest of us.Thanks for that!Ramsing

More Images not showing in edited instructable on Chrome

I have edited an existing instructable https://www.instructables.com/id/Arduino-Controlle...and have uploaded extra images to step 7. The first 3 images show OK and there is an icon labeled "8 more images"when I click on it the wait symbol appears and the images never load. This seems to be a problem on my Chrome browser.Other browsers show the images but won't display them in the slideshow. The only one that seems to work on all parts is MS Edge.If you go to step 5 which has existing images and click on the icon for 6 more images they all load.

I'm having a problem with my Arduino IDE where I can't upload my programs. I have tried multiple version: 1.6.9, 1.6.13, 1.8.4, 1.8.5 but the problem is always there. To test each version I used a test program that should have said "Hi" in the serial monitor, but every test resulted in the following errors:If someone could please help me fix this problem, it would be grately appreciated! Thanks, Matt

Which one should i use for my Project? Arduino Pro Micro Or SparkFun SAMD21 Mini Breakout?

Hello everyone, As the title, I'm just wondering which one i should choose to do my project - Arduino Pro Micro Or SparkFun SAMD21 Mini Breakout. I'm a student, and i'm going to do my own smartwatch. It only has OLED display, the pulse sensor and SMS/Wifi module inside. I've read the documents about both, it both has a small-size and low-power as i expected, but i have no experience to make sure which one is suitable for my smartwatch. If there's someone who did do the similar project before, please give me some advices. You can suggest another micro if they're better than mine. Please help me.Thanks a lot.

New updates look good, bravo!

There appear to be some fresh updates. From what I see: New photo layouts, which seem to make better use the screen space on desktop. Nice! Up-voting on comments! The old forum Questions now appear to be an aggregated list from questions asked on actual Instructable pages. That's an interesting tweak.High five to the Instructables team. Nice to see, keep up the good work! What else are people seeing that maybe I haven't noticed?

Nema 17 stepper motor problem, how can I solve it?

Hello guys, I finally get done my Laser Engraver with Arduino, it's actually a combination of 3 projects from here, and now, at the end, my motors does not work...Here you can find the motor I use: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Free-shipping-1PCS...I connect them on a cnc shield with A4988 drivers, I use GRBL as a firmwale and the program for engraving I don't think they matter, because I use 3 of them with no results.P.S.: the Laser is working, the M03 and M05 functions works great, but the motors not a step...Thank you and I accept any speculations, I was thinking that the current from the driver was not enough, but after a research I found that isn't true ( I think ).

Tim's Cybot conversion to Arduino NANO

Hi all.I'm doing a new project.Dug out my Cybot. The one built on a fortnightly issue of Real Robots back in 2001.I decided to convert it to use the Arduino NANO. With Bluetooth and Infrared Control.I haven't finished it yet, so I haven't done an instruction here, I thought I would wait until I have finished the project before doing that. However, as it's quite a lengthy project, I have started a blog on my google+. Which I am updating as I progress with the project. Here is the link: Tim's Cybot conversion to Arduino NANO Blog. Before I started I had a search on the net to see if anyone else had done this, but all I found was basic stuff controlling the drive motors.Currently I have done a rough sketch (some fine tuning still needs to be done) for it that lets you:Control it via bluetooth,Set it in line follow mode,Set it in light follow mode,Set it in avoidance modeandControl it with an Infrared Remote.I'm sure there is still a lot of these Cybots out there, so i thought their may be some interest.

Can't stay logged in on Chrome after opening link from email using Google+ Authentication

Is there a real bug reporter/tech support forum/email? This seems to be going into the generic user forum.I've been experiencing the following bug/glitch for a while now:0) I have zero problems when I login manually and copy&past; URLs into windows/tabs spawned from a fresh login in a fresh window1) Click on link in Feed email using gMail's web interface in Chrome 2) Even thought I authenticate with Google+, I'm not logged in 3) I re-sign-in using Google+ and all seems well4) Re-load page launched from email link, not logged in5) Go back to Home Page, I'm logged in.6) Go back to 'ible page, delete all the '?=tracking_informtion' off the end of the URL and refresh, not logged in. (This used to resolve the problem)This wouldn't be so bad if the "Favorite" process behaved like most other sites and continued the interrupted process after signing in. Trying to favorite an 'ible results in:A) Open the 'ible via an email link in gMail in ChromeB) 'ible page shows me as NOT logged in.C) Click on Favorite button, sent to Sign-In page, sign-in, Instructables home page loads.D) If I am signed-in, clicking on the Favorite link on the 'ible page sends me to the home page. No option to sign-in, because I am, and the 'ible is not favorited

Avoiding corrosion when bolting galvanized steel drawer slides to aluminum for camper van bed

Hey guys,Going to build this bed:or something very similar. She says she has 6 sliders at 100lbs each, but I imagine she has 6 slides at 100lbs per pair. Either way, I've already purchased 3 pairs of 500lb drawer slides. The problem is, they're galvanized steel. How do I attach them to aluminum L beams? I can use some thick mil rubber tape between the two materials, but what about the fasteners? Some sort of plastic washer and polyurethane sealant around the head and threads touching the galvanized rail side? What should I use to isolate one from the other?FWIW, I'll probably use 6061 for the frame, which I believe has an anodic index of .9-.95, and the zinc rails are, I believe, 1.25. They're within or close to the .25 threshold so am I worrying about nothing?Cheers

Iphone controlled Gopro?

Ok, total noob here. First, I have a knockoff Gopro camera (Pyle). Are there instructions out here to build the capability to basically turn the camera on and off at will, remotely via cell phone? I'd like to be able to see what the dog is doing during the day. Since I have a "gopro", I'd like to just plug it into a device that I can turn on and off via the internet. This allows me to use the camera for an additional purpose. I would envision a box with all of the electronics inside that has a single cable that plugs into my camera. The box would be hooked up via Wi-Fi in the house to the internet. Not sure if I'm describing this correctly or not, but thanks in advance for help / advice / etc.

Random and useful tips and info

Stuff that's too good not to share. Maybe not worthy of an ible. Dollar store lasers have plated parts made of plastic which actually complete the circuit. Who knew? When hacking these, and using shrink tubing, (heat gun) the plastic parts deform and quit functioning. Muy interesant.

Rant. Search results

Searching for a thread on lasers posted in the last few weeks. Search turns up topics posted 9 yrs ago first. Even those w no responses. Grrr. No wonder dead topics get revived.

Arduino with flow sensor and relay

Hello. I'm needing help on a project with a water flow sensor. Basically, I'm trying to activate a relay (to turn on a motor) when the Arduino board senses any water flow present for 15 seconds or more. I was expecting the relay to turn on after the flow sensor picked up water flow for 15 seconds. After I ran the code, I had water flowing through the flow sensor for 5 seconds and then I shut off the water. The relay still turned on 10 seconds later. I didn't want this to happen. Instead, I would like to have the relay turn on only after there is water flow for at least 15 seconds. Please review my code below. I would appreciate any help. Thank you!!!byte sensorInterrupt = 0; byte statusLed = 13;byte sensorPin = 2;const int threshold = 15000; // thresholdfloat calibrationFactor = 4.5;volatile byte pulseCount; float flowRate;unsigned int flowMilliLitres;unsigned long totalMilliLitres;unsigned long oldTime;unsigned int countstart = 0;unsigned long starttime;unsigned long endtime;unsigned long elapsedtime;void setup(){ Serial.begin(9600); pinMode(statusLed, OUTPUT); digitalWrite(statusLed, HIGH); // We have an active-low LED attached pinMode(sensorPin, INPUT); digitalWrite(sensorPin, HIGH); pinMode(7, OUTPUT);// connected to relay pulseCount = 0; flowRate = 0.0; flowMilliLitres = 0; totalMilliLitres = 0; oldTime = 0; attachInterrupt(sensorInterrupt, pulseCounter, FALLING);}void loop(){ while (1){ if((millis() - oldTime) > 1000) // Only process counters once per second { detachInterrupt(sensorInterrupt); flowRate = ((1000.0 / (millis() - oldTime)) * pulseCount) / calibrationFactor; oldTime = millis(); flowMilliLitres = (flowRate / 60) * 1000; totalMilliLitres += flowMilliLitres; unsigned int frac; Serial.print("Flow rate: "); Serial.print(int(flowRate)); // Print the integer part of the variable Serial.print("L/min"); Serial.print("\t"); // Print tab space Serial.print("Output Liquid Quantity: "); Serial.print(totalMilliLitres); Serial.println("mL"); Serial.print("\t"); // Print tab space Serial.print(totalMilliLitres/1000); Serial.print("L"); pulseCount = 0; attachInterrupt(sensorInterrupt, pulseCounter, FALLING); } if( totalMilliLitres > 0 && countstart == 0) { starttime = millis(); countstart = 1; } if ( totalMilliLitres > 0 ) { endtime = millis(); elapsedtime = endtime - starttime; } if (elapsedtime >= threshold){ digitalWrite(7,HIGH); // Activate relay to turn on motor delay(10000); digitalWrite(7,LOW); // Deactivate relay to turn on motor totalMilliLitres = 0; countstart = 0; elapsedtime = 0; break; } else{ digitalWrite(statusLed, LOW); // Turn the LED off digitalWrite(7, LOW);// turn relay OFF } }}void pulseCounter(){ // Increment the pulse counter pulseCount++;}

New website login issues

I have noticed that with the new website logging in is somewhat messed up. Example:Get an email from instructables, click on something interesting - I am not logged in. Click on the 'favorite' icon - sends me to the login page, where I log in, which then redirects me to the front page, not the page I was favoriting. Hit back twice to go back to the page I was viewing, expecting that the login infomration would be cached now, but when I hit the favorite link, I am again redirected to the login page, and then again back to the front page.Frustrated now, do a search from the home page and try to find the page i was looking at so that I can finally mark it as a favorite. ----Secondarily, as another data point, I don't think that the new website layout is an improvement. Too much whitespace in lots of places.

Instructables Editor

The instructables editor has two annoying bugs:(1) Text high-lighting does not show when writing an Instructable ... it only shows in the preview screen. It should be WYSIWYG.(2)If you decide to take a break, before publishing your instructable, and click the "You" button, your only option is to "Logout" ... all of the other options such as "Instructables" are masked by a floating window. It's a real pain to have to log back in ... is there a (hidden) screen option that I can't see?

Hi! we have this severe problem of black mold in every room, the wall is black... Water puddles on the floor.... Our surveyor and a builder told us (after cheeking everything) to solve the problem with a heat exchanger in every room... we are trying one in the kitchen but after 2 weeks i still found water on the floor and the mold in the corner seems increased... someone tried that? The cause of the mold are heat bridges and non existin insulation...

How to replace BT Headphone Batteries?

Hi, I own an Alcatroz Airwave 300 for 6 months and I have issues with battery. I always use it when I got home from school, doing homeworks, doing household chores, even going out to the public. I always charged it until its full but they only last for 2 1/2 hours. Recently, I noticed that my battery discharges easily. It doesn't last for 5 mins. So I decided to open the headphone where the battery and bluetooth module was installed, then the battery inflated and exploded. I was lucky that i'm not hurt but then I had no money to replace those. The warranty on this thing voided so I got no choice but to replace it. One day, I was looking for a potential replace for my headphones then I found my old nokia. It's display was damaged but the battery is still good. After 6 years of owning it, I can't believe that my Nokia battery still runs good as new. I thought to myself "why not". Also there is another problem, I don't even know how to solder a simple wire. I have the basic equipment so I need your thoughts and advice including how to do it.Note: before the battery exploded. I lost my receipt after I puchased it, without it, then I have no free warranty. Plus these thing were the last of its batch ever sold as a bluetooth portable headphone.
