An Alarm Clock Idea - No Lights, No Sound Answered

I'm a pretty deep sleeper, and I don't wake up very fast in the mornings, which is bad since I ride the school bus to school. I set my alarm clock, with a high volume, but it still doesn't wake me very good. I've thought of trying to make an alarm that flashes a strobe light, something like a deaf person might use, but didn't think it would work very good. So, my idea now is to think of a way to make an alarm clock that gives pulsating shocks when it goes off. I have absolutely (well, 99%) no idea how to connect it up, nor how to produce the shocks. I'm thinking a shock with high voltage, but low current, like static electricity. I figure that should wake me. Do y'all have any ideas, or better suggestions? Also, do you think that the shocks (if usable) would cause any dangerous effects on my health? Thanks!


take a buzzer alarm, a Van De Graf generator, a relay, or two, some wire and something to use as a contact plate. open the alarm, and remove the buzzer, hook in the relays to the buzzer wires. put the van de graf on a timer set like 20 min or so b4 you want to be up, connect a wire to the van de graf and the relay, with the other part of the relay to the contact plate that is in contact with you, find a way to ground the other part of the contact plate, (plate actually needs to have two parts that will not allow for shorting/ arcing without you making a connection) and go to sleep, in the morning, ZZAAAPPPPP!!!!!! you get a very high voltage, but almost non existant shock. you will feel something! happy morning to you. I claim no responsibility if you blow something up in you circuit, or injure yourself. you may want some diodes for the system so you dont back feed electricity, and at least one surge protector soly for this...

In winter when I was at school I swore by a large, daylight-spectrum 72 watt fluorescent light. It was like an artificial window, that thing seriously put out some light. I had it on a time switch to wake me up at the right time. It would be better if you could make it fade on gradually over the course of about 20 minutes, but this way was a "short sharp shock" (like a bucket of cold water in your eyes).

It really depends if you want a gradual complete wakeup (fading lights on, temperature change etc.) or a very certain instant wakeup (loud alarms, electrocution). A good idea for a slow wakeup might be an electric blanket (do you have those?) on a timeswitch- set to the highest setting, it would gradually heat the bed up until it was uncomfortably warm, at which point I'm sure you would wake up.

If you are set on the electrocution thing, it would be very irresponsible of me to point out that certain devices are available that deliver safe but painful electric shocks, and I definitely shouldn't suggest you experiment with linking these to your alarm clock.

So don't.

Get a plug timer, like the ones people use for christmas lights, get a motor, and fill a bucket of water every night above your bed. When the time comes, the timer goes off, the motor starts, the rope on the bucket pulls and pours the water on you, you should take a shower every morning anyway so you should be good.

Sorry I'm posting so much, but... When my grandma was watching after us when my parents were away, she'd wake me ever-so-gently by just moving the covers off my feet... I'm guessing they get cold (It only works if you aren't wearing socks) and it gradually wakes you up -- but within 10 minutes... I felt like I woke up naturally... I was also thinking about dumping isoprohyl alchohol on you or something, as it would evaporate, unlike water. But if it gets in your mouth... euh...

I think shocking wouldn't be such a bad idea... I'd use it... Get an electrostatic bracelet (normally used to ground you, how ironic :P) and just hook it up to Mr. Shocky :P

A wide, shallow box under your pillow. The top of the tray is drilled with many holes and a small pump is set to blow air into the side of the box (the air will blow out the holes and into your pillow). Set the pump with a timer, also connected to a small scent capsule in the air-line - the smell of your choice (perfume, coffee, elderly fish) will waft through the pillow and wake you up. You could add a hair-dryer into the set-up to make your pillow uncomfortably hot.

There's an idea. Hook up a heating pad to the mattress, such that it could not burn you if you didn't wake up, but would make your bed incredibly uncomfortable.

Use a great big wind-up alarm-clock. Fasten a piece of string to the winder and to your sheet - when the bell rings, the winder will pull your sheet off you, roll it and slap your feet repeatedly with the loose end. (I'm sure I've seen one of those, but I can't remember where...)

I have thought for a while that a possible solution might be a high-torque gear motor hooked up to a cam in the shape of a logarithmic spiral. The spiral would lift up the mattress slowly, then suddenly drop it six inches or so. It would sure wake me up.

or you could just do it pneumaticly...cause then when the thing went off in the morning the air compressor would automatically start going and that sure as hell would wake you up never mind having your mattress drop a foot on you XD

yah..that doesnt sound very safe...if it gets you in the eye your screwed and it could possible pierce skin

Here is what was from that one link of the bacon cooker. "the signal is re-routed by a microchip that in responds by sending a signal to a relay that throws the switch to power two halogen lamps that slow-cook the bacon in about 10 minutes." So, you could have the signal some how re-routed to a switch on a siren, or something of that nature.

Maybe look at one of those shocker pens. See the device used in them, and try it on your clock. However, it might be tricky to configure it to transmit the shock when the clock strikes a certain time.

Put a vibrating disk under your pillow, yet inside your pillow case.

Why not just have a boxing glove punch you in the face? Or maybe a bucket of water drop on you?

It all depends on the sleep cycle too. In the deepest portion of sleep, a deep sleeper is pretty much "shut down" to the outside world (I know, because I have had a tent dropped on me, a lot of ruckus and then the tent being set up, and I never roused).

. As gyromild points out, anything that has to be attached to you is probably not a good idea. . I like whatisface's vibrator idea. You would need to rig it up so the vibrations are annoying instead of pleasant (eg, non-periodic pulses). . I think trebuchet03 has the right idea of using heat. I'd try using an IR source (a high wattage lamp sounds good to me) aimed at your face. Keep the power low enough that it won't harm your eyes. But it needs to put out enough heat that covering your head with the sheet will only delay the effect a few minutes.

Have you tried bright light? An incandescent bulb not too far above your head will be mighty bright and hot. If you don't hide while sleeping, that will be pretty effective :p I put a 75W bulb on a timer my freshman year of college ;) Worked quite well (I was the same way with waking up - on occasion, my dreams would incorporate the alarm buzzer). The trick is to use an incan. bulb as you may be able to hide from the light, but you sure won't from the heat... Don't use a halogen given their breakage potential (I have a friend that got some bad burns on her face from a halogen room light exploding) :/

I've seen watches with vibration motors in them that act as alarms, although i'm not sure how effective they are.

All you need do is build your bed into the wall (fold away bed style), and wire your alarm into a motor and the cable that draws it up. That should be a rather interesting start of the day....

Any kind of waking mechanism that need to be in physical contact with the person seems rather impractical since we tend to twist and turn while sleeping (at least, I do).

I think you could stick with your alarm clock, the only difference is, wire the alarm audio-out signal directly into an amp + larger speakers.

But if you're still interested in tazer-ing yourself, a battery powered stove igniter / sparker is a possibility. Replace the alarm speaker with a relay that attaches to the igniter, which is then wired to a contact point on your finger.
However, depending on how you sleep, there's also the possibility of that contact point ending up in unwanted region comes morning.

well id be pretty carefull if you want to shock yourself. but i think that putting 2 tinfoil patches on your sheet in the general area where you sleep and wire em up with some current...
