Autoplaying ads Answered

The new site design is quite nice, though I didn't have any issue with the old site.
However, I have a real big problem with one feature of the new site.
The auto-playing advertising videos are annoying!
Not only is this rude, but it violates the rules of web design 101. It's just bad form. Viewers should always have the choice whether to start media or not.
It's particularly annoying when you're logged in as a paid Pro user.

Please fix this and the new site will be great.

Thanks!

Sorry for the delay in replying.
Yes, the Solar page. When I turn off AdBlock+ for the site, I get an autoplaying video of Tim Allen talking about the Chevy Volt.
It's still there today BTW.

Thanks.

Are you referring to the ad on the Solar main page, or are there other auto-playing ads that I should know about?

I'm pretty sure it's the one on the Solar page. This report is from a PRO user, and I see the same thing he does. A good comparison is with the corresponding video on the Dremel page -- it's in the same place, has the same purpose, but is not configured to Autoplay. Users can choose whether or not it runs.

As it is (and as a far less polite user has pointed out), the autoplay makes the site NSFW, which is really unfortunate and counterproductive.

I've moved this to Bugs, so that it will get more immediate attention from Staff on Monday morning.

This is not appropriate, but it may not be Instructables' fault -- the ads are generally provided through third party services, not in-house. Consequently, it may take a bit of time for the communication to wend its way back from I'bles to the advertisers...

+1. I find the advertising on the solar page for example pretty in your face as it is, but the autoplay video is too much. I quite often close and reopen my browser, so whenever I do this with that page open, I'll have to find the instructables tab, find the video, and close it. Autoplay videos are just bad netiquette in my opinion.
