I had one that had the power button get pushed in. On many of these types of things they use hot melt glue and it sometimes comes unstuck. So open the case and see if the button has come loose. All you might need to do is glue it back correctly.

If you want to use a remote do like the others say and get a universal one that can be programed for your unit.

Maybe he was just trying to sell you a new tv...or an expensive remote...

Is your remote broken? you can test that with a digital camera. Remotes work with infra red light and the human eye can't see that. But if you look at the light with a digital camera you should be able to see it light up when you push a button on the remote.

If your remote works then it could be a problem inside the tv.

If the remote is broken you should try it with a universal remote, they are cheap.

You could TRY using a tv-be-gone to power it on and off

Get a universal remote and program it for the brand of the TV and your all set.

More can be done but requires expencive test equipment and more knowledge then you currently have.
