Centre drill without a lathe Answered

Can anyone suggest a simple way to accurately drill a hole in the end of a dowel so that it's perfectly centred and parallel to the sides?
I want to install hardware in two brush shafts to make a break-down pole that will support a tarp, and will fit in a car boot.
If you imagine the brass hardware you see in a snooker cue, you'll get the idea.
I could make a jig to hold, and align, the drill and dowel but it's a lot of fuss for a rig I probably won't ever use again.

put a 4x4 in drill press vice. Drill a 1/4" hole clear thru it. Now drill a 1" hole halfway thru. The 2 holes r concentric and on one axis. Now stuff yer1" dowel in one side of the block, and drill yer 1/4" hole from the other side.

Thanks, again, Toga_Dan!
Genius, and simple!
I'll try to remember to post a quick instructable when the hardware arrives.

I remember an instructables about that. Feature ible, iirc.

Another option: find a pipe or tube which is a snug press fit over the dowel. Might be easier, straighter, stronger.

Thanks Toga_Dan. I will have a collar over the dowel for strength but, in my experience, that connection tends to loosen slightly over time. The screw hardware prevents the lower part falling out when moving/re-positioning.

Put the dowel in a drill press and press a drill in.
Start with a small one by hand to get a start, once you got a hole you place drill of desired size in the vice and push the dowel on it.
Unless you seriously mess up the tiny hole all should self center.

Thanks Downunder35m. I tried that when widening the centre of tubes, collars, etc, but my drill press is benchtop and drilling the end of anything longer than half a metre requires some scary Heath Robinson type clamping setups!
