Cleaning a canvas hat.? Answered

Hi Folks.
I have afavorite hat made by Panama Jack I wear a good deal in the summer however I have noticed it has become more than a little grubby.
I contacted the manufacturers & I have to say I was surprised that they were not very much help, I guess in the litigious world we seem to live in they are worried that if i damage my property because I followed their suggestions I may demand a replacement or sue them for damages.
Anyway does anyone have any suggestions? The hat is stiffened canvas so obviously I don't want to do anything that would cause it to soften & loose its shape unless I can re-stiffen or starch it to regain the shape.
I promise I won't sue if your suggestion causes any damage :-)

My mother used Bicaronate of soda on fabrics. You sprinkle it on and leave overnight, then brush off. Hope that helps.

I have found the ONLY thing that will clean a hat is a soap product called "oxyclean". It cleaned most of my "baseball" style hats better than anything else i ever tried. I just soaked them overnight, then twist-squeezed them the next day and let dry. I don't know how this would affect canvas as far as stiffness though. But OXYCLEAN will get it CLEAN !!!

Don't clean your hat. Wear it, and stink with pride.

Ask a dry clean company. Make sure it's one where they do the work on premises. They can safely clean all kinds of materials.

Find a custom hat maker or a custom hat shop and they'll tell you how.
