Coil gun trouble Answered

I have been trying to construct a simple flash curcuit coil gun as i have seen on the internet. I thought i had everything hooked up right but when i go to fire i get a nice spark but no acceleration what so ever. Can anyone tell me the proper materials to use and a step-by-step in coil construction and how to hook up the leads properly TO MAKE IT WORK! any incite is greatly appreciated

I have looked over these carefully. Can anyone tell me if it is absolutely nessesary to use "magnet wire" or will any old copper wire do.Also is it nessasary to use multiple capacitors for results?

More capacitors means you can store a larger charge and are able to dump more power into the. Thus creating a larger magnetic field and pushing the projectile faster.

Magnetic wire is best. It allows you to fit more turns into a tighter space for a stronger magnetic field. If you use any old wire you have to keep the insulator on which takes up allot of space. So you'll have to use a larger coil to get as many turns and layers as you could with magnetic wire. The looser the wires are the less of a magnetic field you'll be able to generate. Or something to that effect.

This is good info.If i decided to not use a capacitor at all and hook my coil to just a battery would i get a magnetic feild strong enough to move an object? If so what size battery and how many.Also i am using some copper wire uninsulated and uncoated 22awg ,although i am abe to wind it by hand, it istnt very uniform and doesnt seem to producing a feild.is uinsulated wire causing my current not to complete. finals are coming up this project will help me your input is greatly appreciated.

The reason you use a capacitor bank is for the extremely large voltage you can discharge all at once into the coil in one quick burst. Do you have a battery that can offer several hundred volts? Even if you did sustaining a high voltage on the coil will destroy the coil.

Any wire you use that isn't insulated isn't creating a coil. Electricity will take the shortest path possible to get from one end to the other. Without insulation the electrons are able to travel straight across the coil from the positive lead directly to the negative lead. The wire has to be insulated so the electrons travel in the circle of the coil creating the magnetic field.

Success!! Now about increasing power,should I use a bigger coil, more batteries or more camaera capacitors? Some instruction on how to properly connect capacitors in paralell i think will help also.

Try a web search on Capacitors. Learn about the pros and cons to connecting capacitors in series and parallel. Keep in mind if you bank can store more power you will need a power supply that can supply that power to the bank.

The gauge and type of wire you are using as well as what kind of insulator is on the wire will determine the max amount of power you can push through the coil before it fails. There should be an indication of that on the wire itself or the spool the wire came on.

If you haven't done so already then read all the instructables about coil guns. Its all about finding the best balance between coil size, coil shape, and power used.
