Computer turns on by itself, BIOS problem? Answered

Not too much information, the BIOS is Phoenix Technologies, LTD. 3.05, 11/27/2003
the computer turns on seemingly at random, hours after it shuts down manually.

Question problem:
You don't know why this is happening, so you've decided that what you don't understand is the BIOS. As a consequence all you've told us about the computer, apart from it starting unexpectedly, is the BIOS version.

No, it's not the BIOS - that's just small-software.
There are several things on the mainboard which can start or wake a system, it'll most likely be one of them.
As much relevant information as you have would be helpful.

(I solved the problem) I checked in the BIOS to see what events the PC is set to
wake up on, it was set on 'wake on LAN' and I disabled that

Wakeup on LAN was the first thing I thought of. That is of course triggered by the LAN connection.

As the BIOS is the only thing that can switch the PC on, it probably is (was) BIOS related. But not a problem with the BIOS, just a setting in it.

I would have guessed it is the option to select the state after a loss and return of mains power (off/on/as before) - Option 'on' in combination with a short, otherwise unnoticeable power drop would turn on the PC.

What OS are you using, are you using any advanced networking technologies like VPN, remote desktop, etc. do you have any software that might need to boot up the computer, things like that are needed.
