Coverting US Voltage to Middle East Answered

My son saved up a lot of money to purchase his very first airsoft gun! We've moved to Dubai and realize the voltage is different here! He's devastated :(

His charger is:

INPUT: AC 110V 60Hz
OUTPUT: DC 8.4V 450mA

What can I do? What do I need?

If they are still in business, these guys should be able to help with the local rules.

AFAIK anyone 18 years or older can have an air rifle down there.

Still the best way way is to buy a suitable power adapter that fits ;)

Is he allowed to bring an airsoft gun into UAE?

The first two weeks of living in the middle east is fun when you figure out what will run on 220 and what cant.

You'll need a step up transformer. They are heavy, it will convert the 220V to 110V but wont change the hertz. Not a problem unless your using something with a motor or a clock.

Also, do not plug an american power strip into the wall, it will burn up.

Thank you all. Well, looks like I have another problem on my hands now. He was messing about with it and plugged it in the wrong adaptor and burnt his charger.....arrrrgghhhh! Now I need to order a new charger and a new adaptor.

There are many travel adapters out there that will plug into the plug you have and output the US standard of 110VAC-120VAC so all you have to do is plug whatever US device you have into the adapter.

It always surprises me that the US seems to need everything different and when something changes the whole world collapses.

Either get a proper charger for 220V or the next closest with 9V instead of 8.4.

Pure and simple logic really...

That's because everyone else is doing it wrong. Like driving on the other side of the road. **runs away**

The US had the first AC electrical grid. Edison used a 110VDC standard cause that is what his Incandescent Light bulb worked on. So when Tesla Developed AC he stayed with the 110 voltage level to help compete against Edison. So 110 stuck. It wasn't till a few decades later that the world realized the benefits of 220VAC. The US stuck with what it had and the rest of the world moved on. So it was the rest of the world that felt they needed to be different from us.

Gizmodo has a good writeup about the differnt plugs and how they came about.

I would be more worried if he is allowed to have or use an airsoft gun there.

Anyway, from the dubai.com site

"Domestic supply is 220 volts. Sockets suitable for three-pin 13 amp plugs of British standard design are the norm, however it is a good idea to bring an adapter with you just in case. Adapters can be purchased in local supermarkets. Appliances purchased in the UAE will generally have two-pin plugs attached."

You should be able to plug the airsoft battery charger into an adapter you buy. Good luck.
