Well thanks everyone for the support, I didn't win, but the comments left by you guys are well worth the effort :) Almost as good as having a laser cutter in the garage! lol :) Anyway thanks for cheering me on, it really means a lot to me! Keep building, hacking, creating, rinse and repeat. -Crabfu

Wouldn't have been awkward Nemo, just would have been convenient ... I'd be bugging you every day about making stuff for me :)

As always, your steam powered projects show great workmanship. Enjoyed the ones you showed at Robogames. What's it's going to be for next year?

Thanks! Robogames is a great event, glad that you made it and was able to see some of these in person :)

As to what to expect next year for me at robogames.... well there will be more steambots for sure, but I am venturing out to other form of robots as well. Most recently I've been getting my feet wet in humanoid robots - sorry, not steam powered :)

And since I am an animator/artist by trade, I am focused on making more realistic and natural motions with humanoids, rather than strictly for robo-one combat. I'm still in the beginning stages of learning all this technical stuff, but was able to get some walk cycles and basic locomotion worked out, you can see some of the test movies here:



So this may be a nice transition into what I would use a laser cutter for if I won :)

1) I would use the laser for etching detailed work for my steambots. I would love to put more victorian scroll work into my steam machines. Part of the compelling part of steampunk, and victorian designs, is the over the top work of making machines beautiful. I only have tools to make pretty straight things, bend, drill and hack, and would love to get more small in-scale detail into my machines. It would make for great detail touches for my hobby - vent holes, scroll work and ornate shells, etched details for curvy lines and patterns :)

2) I would love to use a laser cutter/etcher for body work of my humanoid robot...cut and etch thin plastic for some body shell. I've been concentrating on the programing of motions so far, but want to start thinking seriously about custom body shell, all I've done so far are the head and painted chest pieces.

3) I am always creative with what I am into. With any new tool or platform, I always try to find creative ways of using it. I would like to explore uses of making detailed designs in thin metal or plastic, and create static and kinetic art in miniature, which probably won't be steam, but just micro sized pieces of art....maybe even micro robots using micro motors and servos, and by micro I mean palm sized. You can see some of my art here, although it's very out dated:

4) Make a lot of etchings of personal stuff for friends and family of course :)

I had spent more than 250 minutes looking each one of the contesters, with a very sharp attention. I have heard something about not to vote in a cool project, instead an instructable one.

IMHO, the R/C STEAM TURBINE TANK is, precisely, a very INSTRUCTABLE. COM issue!
I will, perhaps, NEVER built someone, but this is not the topic, becouse its inspires me in another directions, just into SEEING the awesome gadget, with SOUND, a plus itself, included!

A kind of, lets say, SENSORIAL MATTER Design. I prefer that someone donate that old HUEY CHOPTER, BTW... ;)

You REALLY deserves the Lasercutter or wichself things the staff people here wants to premiate, even a Chocolate Bar With Crunchy & Fresh Brazilian Nuts... ;D

I would not call your English "rude." It is hilarious! Your ideas are understood clearly, but with many ridiculously awkward phrases thrown on top. :D At least you are aware that your English isn't perfect. Keep working at it. You are already much clearer than many native English speakers on this website. :)

This is one of those instructables that you don't have to be a complete whiz kid to build or have a bottomless supply of money and works with off the shelf parts. I liked the Multi touch screen but who can afford a $4000 projector and camera etc. I like the fun behind this one so it gets my vote.

awesome as always crabfu...the lococentipede is still my favorite tho. i do feel obligated to interject that you can purchase a brand new projector for $500 and a webcam for $50. it is a bizzare world we live in where a hobby steam engine costs more than a microfabricated dlp projector.

Thanks turkey tek... Yeah it's funny and ironic huh? low tech can often be expensive, it all come down to supply and demand. Product in demand are mass produced, and can be cheap, even when it is super complex. Model grade steam engines and boilers are machined & silver soldered by hand, by skilled and specialized craftsmen. The market for hobby steam is pretty small, therefore made in limited quantities and can get pricey. You are paying for a craftsman's time, in a very small, and specialized field. I can barely drill a straight hole, or solder simple pipes together correctly, so I can really appreciate the skill and time involved in the making of something that seems so simple. A simple toy steam engine can run you about 100 bucks, and is many time less complex, and twice the price of a mass produced webcam :) Anyway, great project turkey tek, and thanks for the kind words! Thanks :) But I think the main point of instructables is to learn how to make something cool, regardless of cost. Yeah I don't have, or would want to spend 4k for a project like that, but I can learn how it's made, so maybe it will provide background for a future project or something :) the touch screen shouldn't be judged for the costs... not everyone can, or will be willing to spend the money for this project either. The cool part of making things to me, is to feel ownership and be proud of it. Personally, I made a lot of these steam machines because I wanted them, but no one had made it before. You can't just go to the hobby store and buy one, or even find a single picture on the web for reference. However I did find sources for all of the parts, since I can't just machine it up. There are a lot of info in this instructable that took me a long time to learn. I asked a lot of stupid questions to the experts, read up on all that I could, and went through lots of trial and error, learned a heck of lot of things the hard way - by making newbie mistakes. If nothing, I hope that some of the tips and tricks provided, will open new doors for builders, makers, and hackers :)

Thank you! I hope that some people make it, it is really fun to build, and a blast to run. At least I hope that this instructables will inspire people to creatively hack together off the shelf parts, without much machining skills or special tools, to make something unique :)
