DarkOwlKnex's Project Update Two Answered

As my profile status has said for a while now: I've been working on a TR8 and I might post a forum topic about it.  This is the forum topic about it.  It's amazing how often I've been on lately, but don't expect that in the future.  I sort of don't have anything else to do with my time other than going to the library, taking walks (It's nice out where I'm at) and a few other things, but the bulk of my time, for the week, has been spent here.  Stuff I have to do will keep popping up from here on out.

I call this custom  TR8 of mine The AutoSuggestion.  Why?  Because it's the name of this one song that I like.  I realize that I should send a link to the song, but I figure since you guys won't like it anyway, what's the point.  (I have a weird taste in music)

It Features:
A comfortable stock.
A comfortable handle.
A comfortable fore grip.
Innovative new TR body design.

I can't really say anything else about it until I'm finished; once I finish, I can you tell about the range, and other things.  I'm going to have to make many cosmetic changes before I upload it to the Rods and Connectors contest.  (Thanks, JonnyBGood for alerting me of this contest)  Any helpful suggestions as to what I can do to improve it would be much appreciated.  Thanks for viewing!

Update: I finished the rough draft; the pictures will now show the latest version; it is now on the official prototype phase.  I'm probably just going to tinker with it excessively until it's perfect for the Rods & Connectors Contest.

Update: Made it fire; gets decent range so far.  Installed turret rotating system; it requires bands, but is very easy to use.

Update: Cleaned up stock and barrel area.  I also made a completely new handle.

I would say that it looks alright, but it does (as everybody else has said) need to be cleaned up. I am not a big fan of TR guns, they are overrated, and not that good, but this is alright.

Overrated? The advantages are simple load my new TR8 with fin ammo and shoot 300ft repeatedly. They have been threw 3 or more major wars so they have been battle tested so to say. The reason they may seem overrated is because they have potential to be pretty unstoppable especially at range. I'm not say all TR's are good because they aren't but my TR8 is 4yrs+, and 3 major wars proven.
Not looking for a fight just trying to defend my honor :P

*Wink* Yes, overrated. Do not label me as a "Doubting Thomas," but I would need to see a TR gun shoot 300 ft. before I believe it. I had a breach loading gun some time back, and that shot only 60-70 ft., and that right there really diminished my belief in singling out bullets. I am glad your TR8 serves you well, and I must say, it looks pretty boss, but I really have not much of a desire to build one. I would bet you that my RMACR shoots faster than your TR8, and keep in mind, its a mag gun. Speed is almost everything in a K'NEX war. I did not say it was everything, but it is almost everything. I must admit, your TR8 would easily out-preform my RMACR, but then again, my RMACR has a higher mag capacity, and a faster ROF. I know you were not looking for a fight, and I respect you for that. =D

Thank you for your response I'll have to check out your gun! As for the 300ft mark I do realize that this feat does seem kinda out there lol I would have probably agreed with you myself had I not seen it done with my own eyes. However it is true and more than that it is consistently repeatable with 6 size 64 rubberbands on my TR8 it will shoot my fin ammo 300ft. Just ask any of the following guys that have witnessed it. Mepain, Oodalumps, Zakrants, Bakenbitz94, knex_pls, and many more. I have some videos on youtube if you wanna check then out my youtube account name is KILLERK lol check it out

Killerk and Red, this is hilarious!!! If you want me to I can change the title of this forum topic to: "The Ultimate Debate: Turret Rifles Vs. Magazine Loaded K'nex Guns." I'm not even kidding! It'd actually be kind of awesome to see you two go at it.

I guess so, but it'd be kind of fun to see this turn into an argument between all the k'nexers. It's almost a classic rivalry: TR's Vs. Mags. :3

(I realize I overuse :3's a lot, but I think they're awesome.) :3

I would say that comparing mag guns and TR guns is like comparing apples and oranges. Both are a fruit, and both are edible, but they are not alike. Both are a K'NEX gun, both shoot, but they are not alike. It is arguable that you could compare the pros and cons of each and see which has more or less, and then you could decide which was better, but you would need a panel of independent scientists. =D

No problem. I like to make sure that I respond to people, when they take the time to respond to me.

I am not saying that it is impossible that a TR gun got 300 ft., I am just saying that it kinda sounds...well... far fetched. I did not know that any of the other people you named were still around.

Thanks for your YouTube account name, I'll be sure to check it out. =D

They are on knex innovation from time to time and we were planning on having a war this summer in Ohio would love to have you out if you wanted to come hang out!

I would love to come but I won't be able to make it. I live over 13 hours away from my grandparents house in Ohio. I would love to come and just hang out, meet a bunch of you dudes, shoots some K'NEX guns, but it would be way too hard to get there. I have been thinking about it off and on all day, and I really do wish I could go...

Wow, it sounds so cool. =D Sometimes I wish I just had money coming out my ears (not literally, you understand) so that I could just do what ever I want.

Oya also your ROF may be better than the TR8 and it may have a higher capacity mag than my gun I could agree with that. The main reason for the TR8 used over the TR18 is simply reliability. Also in terms of what matters most in wars I'd say ultimately it depends on the range of the fight you will be in. If your are outside range is vital and the speed the shot travels is extremely important. Where as if the entire war was indoors 50ft ranges with a good ROF and high mag capacity even shotguns would prove very successful.

I always thought that the TR18 seemed a bit to bulky and heavy to be used easily. I have often asked people this, but I have never gotten a reply. Again, I agree with you. If you are outside in an open area, go with a finned TR gun. If you are inside and within a 50-80 ft. range area, go with a gun that has a high ROF and a large mag capacity.

As to shotguns, now that topic interests me. I have yet to see an actually effective K'NEX shotgun. Do you have any suggestions? I saw a really EPIC one on KI once, but I could not find the instructions on how to build it...

I have some videos of a shotgun design I came up with about 2 years ago... I don't know how long it's been but I haven't done much with it since. I do however have a new shotgun idea I am working on right now but I can't disclose anything more than that. lol sry The turret shotgun on KI is a good concept that never really seemed to have the power, range, or kinks worked out of it to be an effective weapon as of yet. However I think it does have serious potential.
My main focus lately has been work on a directional mine. I've learned a lot with the builds and it has inspired me to try a bunch of new ideas.

Yeah, that turret shotgun was the one that caught my eye, do you happen to have the link to the actual gun itself on KI? I can't wait to see what you do with your shotgun, sounds awesome.

I kind of prefer TR's to mag guns, but that's just me. For some reason, I feel like we have opposite preferences in terms of weapon choice. :3 I've cleaned it up and will post pictures soon. Feel free to come and see the updated version. ._.

It's funny, my view is in between. I see the point of TR guns, but I believe they are overkill. The main benefit with them is range and, to an extent, reliability. But using a turret is bulky, unattractive, and not very modular in design. If you really want max performance, they're OK, but I prefer the aesthetics and ease of use of magazines. That said, once this is all cleaned up, it'll probably look better than most other TRs.

Thanks. Coming from you, that means a lot. I think I'm a TR kind of guy, because I feel that the bolt actions wouldn't be as reliable for me. I like TR's because they are, in my opinion, a sort of neat looking sci-fi type gun; they generally get, as you have said, great range, and I feel that at this moment, TR's win out in range over bolt actions/ magazine guns. Once people learn better ways of implemented magazines, their ranges will improve, and I might want to build one. Until then, I'm sticking with Turrets. ;3

Now that's more like it. It looks much more appealing to my eyes.

Well... I looked at this for a while, kind of like you probably did, thinking something looked...you know different. I think the stock should maybe be bigger because my eyes start on the large front end but end on a thinner back stock. Maybe I think this is weird because usually guns have a larger stock than barrel. Just a theory, you know how I design things!

I've just made a new, cleaner version now. Yes, I did look at it for a while, and I figured it out; there are new pictures being uploaded now.

Wait a sec, there already up..... {Palm to forhead} XD. I like the new portable look!

It's messy because it has a lot of quirky connections everywhere. I don't know exactly how you could fix that without remaking the entire gun. Also, I get that you bent the stock for a purpose, but people are picky here about aesthetics, so if you want the gun to be popular, I'd recommend fixing it. If you don't care as much, then that's fine, stick with what you like. Just a general tip on aesthetics, people like straight lines and smooth curves. So the more jagged edges you have, the less pleasing and more "messy" it looks. This is just a problem I notice in most TR guns.

I'm going to post this eventually so I have started to 'fix' the stock. I don't know what I'm going to do with the front end, but I'm sure something will come to me eventually. Actually, it came to me right now. Pictures will be posted in a little bit.

Oh, and thanks, TD! Without having to reply to your comment, I wouldn't have had this revelation. :3

Haha, you're welcome, I guess. Good luck. I look forward to seeing more of your work.

Looks ok but it looks like the front and back are a little saggy. You also may want to clean it up a little bit; make it look neater.

The stock is purposefully bent; I wanted to give it a realistic angle of sorts. It seems the 'sagging' is almost exaggerated in these pictures because it is actually very solid, but it's at a purposeful angle.

It does need MAJOR cleaning up.  (I usually take about two weeks to get from something like this to something as clean looking as my D2OP or DOT Pistol.)  I still need to work on the front end, though, and was wondering why it was messy.  I agree that it's messy; I just can't place my finger on why it's messy.  Any suggestion on how to clean it up would be much appreciated.  Thanks for your time!

It's hard to place, but my best guess is that there are to many open connector slots just facing outwards. This can be seen on the top and on the stock. I would take that thing sticking out of the stock off and make it one structure, too.

I've fixed those two things. I regret to inform everyone that I'll be a LOT less active for about four weeks. Pictures of the new 'cleaner' looking version will be posted soon. Hopefully...

Nice. The stock and front end look a bit rough though.
Also, is that just the picture angle, or is the yellow rod the turret probably attaches to bending down?

I'll work on what you've suggested. I haven't finished building the stock yet, so that explains the roughness, but you're right: the yellow rod that will mount the turret is bending down a bit, so I have to fix that. Thanks for the help!
