Do language learning computer programs work? Answered

I decided the other day that I would like to learn a second language, but I don't really want to pay for and have to commit to weekly lessons/classes. There is a used book store close to where I live, and they sell language learning software for pretty cheap. I'm not sure what language I  would like to learn, but in general do these programs work?

Yes.  The DVD lessons also work.

You still have to practice and practice.  You still have to learn the grammar and the vocabulary and practice.  It all works better if you have a friend that speaks the language you are trying to learn to practice with so they can guide you along the way.

It also works better if you start learning that second language at about 3-4 years old.

Note that resources of this sort may be available through your local public library, if you want to just try it out and see how well it works for you. Ours subscribes to a web-based language program, for example.

As with any self-paced program, how well it works depends largely on how motivated you are.

On top of Re-designs comment (which was very good btw)

I would also like to say that for the writing part it is a huge help to go on a forum or site in the language you want to learn as soon as you coverd the basics.

For example I'm from Belgium and I speak dutch. My second language is french, my third is german and my fourth is english. But my english is much better in comparison to those other language's because I use it every day on instructables and on a forum for an online webbrowser game I enjoy.

I would suggest you do the same. Start learning the language of your preference and as soon as you can express yourself go on a forum that interests you in that language. Explain at first that it's not your first language and I'm sure the people there will be nice enough to correct you if you make any mistake.

This also forces you to respond in there language and is a big help for learning to write a language (in my opinion the hardest thing to learn in a language).

Alternitevly (somebody correct me on the spelling please :) ) you could also get a penpal but it's maybe a bit to retro for you :p
