Driving a CRT, testing a flyback transformer Answered

Hi all,

I have taken apart an old color crt monitor which was not working and I don't know how I could reuse the crt from it, I have a feeling it still works and that the problem was the flyback transformer, and would NOT like to throw away the crt. I would like to know if anyone knows how to drive a crt, without having to do something TOO complicated, I will be happy with very minimal results such as just a blue color being displayed, or such, as long as something gets to appear on the screen. Then I can use the x and y axis controls (the little plastic carrier on the neck of the crt) to control the image sizes. I heard that you have to find out which pins  of the crt are for the filament and provide around 6V to it, but how do you find this out? Also if someone knows how I can test the flyback to make sure that is the problem, it would be helpful. Any help is appreciated.

The way to drive the CRT is to plug it back into the board. However, that is non-functional already. Do you think you can fix what's wrong with it or completely rebuild the board?


I surely wouldn't be able of rebuilding the board, however I might try to fix that one. What I suspect the problem is, is the flyback transformer or the circuit driving it. That's why my other question was also, how to test a flyback.

Asking whether you'd rebuild it is making a point - these things are complex.
I don't know how to diagnose a CRT driver except that "it works" or doesn't.
Dodgy-looking capacitors - swelled-or burst - are a start, but you've got what you have, and your best bet is o stick with that.
