Functional intra nasal prosthesis Answered

A patient had a malignant cancerous tumor removed from the nasal anatomy and is now left with no nose and no internal nasal structures that normally would filter, warm and humidify the inspirated air. Can anyone design a mini air conditioner that is light weight, safe to use, easy to clean, and affordable? If you do, then you can patent your device, and will probably be the first to ever create such a device. While there is no monetary reward, you would probably become known in the international medical community, and your device could be developed and marketed through the usual channels. As for me, I have nothing to gain. Its just that I am trying to help some colleagues who are now faced with this challenge. Anyone?

Does it need to fit in the prosthesis? I have seen where an artificial nose is affixed to the face via magnets mounted to the skull. If so, a small filter could be placed in their without much difficulty. It cant be too thick as to restrict air flow. However, because it can be removed daily for cleaning, that should help with the filter part.

How does an electronic cigarette work? It generates a vapor. Is the air heated too? I don't know an e cig smoker to ask? Maybe the device that causes the heat and vapor can be adapted to fit in the nasal cavity via the prosthesis. It would not have to run all the time. Just occasionally to moisten the nasal interior. Just brain storming ideas. Let me know what you think.

Usually this sort of project would be tackled by a team—a doctor, an industrial designer, an engineer. It'd be interesting to see the DIY community tackle such a project.

The patient is being treated by healthcare workers such as a head & neck surgeon, an oncologist, a Prosthodontist, an Anaplastologist, a Dentists and others.
The key to this project is simplicity. The idea is to create a prototype which can be used and tried. Then it can be developed and streamlined.

In reply to sosclosetsandfurniture all I can say is that your suggestion is brilliant. Now all that is required is to create the air condition, within a dimension of one cubic inch. It will have two tubes that will transit through it from the entry point which is also the exit point for the air in and out.

In this case dimension and weight are crucial. I would suggest a one inch cubic volume is all you have to fit in the device.

I would think if you look along the lines of SCUBA, rerespirators, or jet pilot or astronaut breathing apparatus they would be designed with the same considerations. Maybe one could adapt the medical ventilators used in hospitals for portable use. Good luck.
