Help with my Harbor Freight powder coater? The powder doesn't stick. Answered

The powder no longer sticks to the metal I'm trying to coat. I can't figure out why.

The tip still sparks when I touch it to the grounded metal.
The gun is clean.
I bought fresh powder.
I changed the disposable air drier.
Everything looks like it's working.

Does anyone have any experience with these? Know anything I can check or test?This is driving me crazy.



How humid is it ? 

Is there any attraction for the powder to the work ?

Let me clarify a few points in case someone else has this problem in the future.

There was no attraction for the powder to the work.
I only touched the tip to the work to check for spark because it wasn't working.
This is to verify that I've got proper connection.

As for the humidity (an excellent point) I'm not sure exactly. I was working in my garage, and I would not say that it was noticeably humid at the time.

What I can say, is that even though I couldn't verify that the machine was faulty, I took it back to harbor freight and exchanged it for a new one.

I used it in the same environment, and under the same conditions and it worked as it should.

So, in closing, I found that even if a powder coater seems like it's working, it might not be.

Good idea - the more humid it is, the harder it is to generate and hold a charge.  It should probably be less than 10% (or whatever it says in the manual that came with the gun)

Isn't the powder supposed to stick due to a static charge?  So grounding the metal would loose the static charge?

.  I worked at a place where we used electrostatic paint sprayers that charged the paint - not the part to be painted. I don't know if it works the same for powder or not.

And if that's the case here, the part should not be allowed to contact ground, or the paint won't stick.

Using a multimeter, test the part being sprayed to see if it is grounded.

.  So both the paint and the part are (oppositely) charged? I don't know why, but I always just assumed the part was at ground potential.

My mistake; the part must be grounded, as well as the equipment.  Whoops!  Here's a good link on grounding when powder coating:
