Herbst Appliance Answered

-update-

cant believe the attention this has got.
either way i got my braces off...in august of 2008. Wednesday before school started.
Finally.
straight teeth finally, and i can eat! so great.
either way it still took like 5 or 6 years, too long.
Im just wearing an invisible retainer(behind my teeth, its glued in, its just a wire). Cant even feel it.
Just think- if you have braces- how good it will feel when you get them off...

OK, I have braces, meant to correct the spaces that were in between my teeth, and also, to move my lower jaw forward. I've had them for...5 YEARS! Needless to say, they JUST finished closing most of the gaps(again, after 5 years), and are working on moving my jaw forward. So, like almost every person I see with braces (well, some), I got rubber bands. I actually had a choice between them and the Herbst appliance. I picked the herbst-y thing, but they didn't have a part...so, blah blah blah, long story short, I got rubberbands until the part came in. So the part came in today, and I went for them to put it on, and after about an extremely boring hour, they were on. Anyway, It wasn't until then that I realized what (Insert bad word(s) here) things these were. I can't eat ( more specifically- chew), talk (clearly), or EVEN FULLY CLOSE MY MOUTH!.
i hate them.
...
...
...
...
...
...
SO...
...on a lighter note, does anyone here have/had that herbst thing before?
Update- I got them off, and I'm wearing rubber-bands now.

The herbst hurts unbelievably much. I wanted mental therapy when I had it. To anyone who wants to pull it out, just tug on the bar hard. It did not hurt me when I did it, and it came out. Just keep tugging until it breaks. But keep in mind, for me, this only broke it, and afterward I still needed a little screw driver thingy that the dentist gave us to completely remove it. (My parents helped me remove it after I broke it.) I have switched to rubber bands, cheer cheer. The worst part is no one even believes that it hurts that badly. “Oh, you’ll get used to it. It’ll be fine. It’s only braces (no it is not). You are already one eighteenth of the way there.” It is so annoying. It takes away quality of eating and fricking life, to constantly have a mechanical spidermonkey in your mouth! Can’t even eat pizza, or anything!!! My teeth do not even touch. Sure, maybe like barely. But really not much at all. I hope others can understand my experience. That godforsaken thing! Smoothies get boring after a while! And I really get hungry.

P.S.

When you get it out, keep it... you can smash it up with a malet in your garage, and it is so fun. Remember to do that. Take a screenshot of this and keep it as a picture so you remember. Whoever is going to do that, please reply the word,

Don't get the herbst appliance, it hurts a hella lot. The two screws on the bottom cause two bumps whenever you smile, and it's extremely sore. I can't eat because the freaking appliance makes me chew with my front teeth which takes 5 minutes to eat one bite of whatever. My jaw hurts and I have a lisp, but that's normal. My tongue has several cuts too. I also have the expanders and it takes an HOUR to do all my flossing with all the food getting caught. I'm getting the appliance off in a year, hopefully it will get better. Last night, it was so uncomfortable, I couldn't fall asleep until MIDNIGHT!

Another major thing that hurts when I eat is when my cheeks touch the metal thing and they pinch together. My cheek was almost bleeding

I just got my Herbst thing yesterday and already despise it. I almost choked trying to swallow corn chips after a day at school of not being able to talk correctly. Everything hurts. It's bad.

So it's been a long time since I last posted here. I got my Herbst appliance out 3 months ago. It was very painful for them to take it out, but now the pain that I was whining about before seems so trivial now so excuse my childish whining on my previous posts, please. By the way, I have braces and rubber bands now and they're so much better because I can take them out when I want to eat and they're not painful at all. All in all, the Herbst appliance WILL be worth it in the end, so deal with the struggles now, and you'll have a much better bite by the end of it.

Ok so quick question. I only have my top and bottom parts for the herbst. I don't have my tubes and rods in yet, but the wire that connects the two top parts together is extremely painful. It is jamming into the roof of my mouth and is causing sores, cuts, and inflammation. I'm just wondering if this is a normal thing or if I should talk to my orthodontist.

Oh my ever freaking god. I am actually so mad right now. I got the herbst two days ago and I feel like my (enter curse word here) mouth is dying. I got mine right before Christmas which really sucks too. I can't fully close my mouth and I almost choked on trying to chew a pistachio the other day. I was sleeping over at my friends house last night and I had to go home to get soft food because I COULDN'T eat anything at their house. DO NOT GET THE HERBST STAY WITH RUBBER BANDS

I have had my herbst in for five months now. So far it has broken off three times and when I first got it I had a lisp, my tongue hurt, my mouth was sore, and my mom had to blend everything for a month. For those getting it for the first time these are just things you will have to live with and get used to. I can now pronounces my s's and people at school have gotten used to them in my mouth. What sucks is I drool so much making it so embarrassing in public and you have to swallow so many more times, and food gets stuck in my expander all the time. You can't each chewy things or crunchy things and after some visits they add metal things to your pole to give you more of an underbite. Overall though it's just something you have to bear and when it's over you will be so happy!

I'm 11 years old I got the herbst appliance 2 days ago it SUCKS! I already have a cold sore that has a hole in it. I can't eat. It bugs me so much. Hurt a ton my muscles are sore and my teeth hurt. The ortho said it was going to hurt for a while and I should eat soft food for the first 10 days then she said you should be able to eat solid foods; well she was lying none of that is true. So awful totally wouldn't recommend it. I am getting it off AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. So happy I'm getting it off. I look like a chipmunk some kid even felt the need to point it out "oh that's why your cheeks are so chubby" SO HORRIBLE.

It was all their fault, they didn't put a bar to hold up the rods, which was causing my ulcer. Anyway, they're gonna put it in soon, wish me luck that this doesn't happen again ;)

So, I'm back, and my gums healed so they put the goddamn Herbst back in (I had no choice) and guess what? It's only been a week since the Herbst has been put back in, and the EXACT SAME THING HAPPENED. I'm starting to think that it wasn't an infection or ulcer it's just the Herbst destroying my gums and cheeks. Anyway I'm getting it taken out AGAIN at 2:00pm today. It's currently 8:48am and I'm counting down. I'll update you on what happens later.

I got mine on today. So far the pain is only in my jaw, no sores in my mouth or anything yet. It hurts my jaw like crazy, though, even with the ibuprofen I took. Eating is basically impossible- even soup is hard to get down, and I can't chew at all. Wish me luck with this.

I've had my Herbst appliance for 5 months now. About 2 weeks ago I noticed a small infection in my mouth. I thought it'd go away but it just got worse. I visited the orthodontist and they gave me some antiseptic toothpaste. After a week, the toothpaste made it 10 times worse so I stopped using it. Right now, the side of my mouth is so painful so I'm getting the appliance taken out (yay) for 1-2 weeks to let my infection heal. I've been thinking of taking it out permanently, so I've read what could happen. Minor damage to roof of mouth, small facial deformity. I don't care, this doesn't cause as much pain as the infections I've been getting. To all of you considering the Herbst appliance, DON'T GET IT! IT SUCKS! Get rubber bands, they're more comfortable and do the job only slightly less. Better than wasting money on something that makes you want to kill yourself.

Okay I have braces, the herbst, and the expander thing. I just got that on two days ago. And let me tell you, it is the worst thing I have ever done. It is cutting up my tongue and the inside of my cheeks. It's so hard to even swallow without my tongue scratching the expander. My mouth is so sore I can't even begin to explain. Another thing is I can not chew to save my life !!! The herbst only alows my mouth to move a little , so there is so much pressure when I chew. After like 10 minutes of chewing the smallest bite, I try to swallow it , and guess what. Nothing goes down my throat. It all gets stuck in my expander and in the side of me cheek. So I have to use my finger to scoop it out which is really nasty. I haven't eaten anything in so long and I'm really hungry. Literally been living off of smoothies. I've cried like the whole time I have had it. I'm really thinking about going to the place and making them take it out, it's not even worth it to me. If you get it, good luck to you.

they are kind of like when you first get braces when you stop using wax (which I don't think you can use with the herbst) your mouth will build up a callus and stop hurting (this is for people who find this later on)

The appliance isn't all that bad, just try not to talk a lot for the first few days if you have trouble pronouncing certain words. The only bad thing that comes to mind thought is that the arms of the appliance can the arms come off easily (mine did within the first four days, but I kept them in the entire time) if they aren't tightened every visit. If they don't, ask them because then you will save yourself extra visits.

My Ortho gave me the choice between Twinblocks and Herbst, after the videos and demos she showed me I think I would like the Herbst appliance more. But after reading the comments, i'm not so sure. It seems like it hurts for everyone, for some people it's worse. I do not want to lose weight, and doesn't want to live off soup and yogurt. About halfway through having my Herbst appliance i'm supposed to get my braces. Apparently having elastic bands on my braces won't work because my overbite is too.... overbitey. Also It seems like you drool and talk awkwardly. (Oh gawd) That would be so annoying! Does everyone drool with the appliance on for the first days?

Do you think the Twinblocks would be better? They are so much bigger, and it seems like it would be harder to speak with them on.

Sorry man, but they can't fix the stabbing in the cheek, it just happens. I've had them for 6 months and you can eat solids about 3-5 days after an adjustment. They're not too bad just be careful with the little metal rings, as I swallowed one this morning.

So the stabbing in the cheek persists all throughout wearing them. On a side note, sometimes the Herbst appliance gets caught in your cheek and it hurts A LOT. So bad, you can"t eat without getting a pain in your mouth.

I got mine a week ago! Let me just it was the worst decision I made. I cant eat (literally) more specifically I can't chew at all. I've been basically eating yogurt and drinking smoothies all day. Not fun! Also when you get them it make you talk funny, spit when you say "s", make you have a lot of saliva, and makes your face appearance odd looking. It also makes you wake up during the night because of how much pain it gives you. To add on, it gives you sores on your gums and cheeks. I don't reccomen getting it.

Hello. My 14 year old son got an expander put in today and he is pretty cranky. He's drooling and sucking back a ton of saliva, which I guess is normal? Not sure of the timeline for treatment, but right now he just wants this thing out of his mouth. I'm not sure how he's supposed to get adequate nutrition while undergoing treatment. So far today he's had a milkshake, a big smoothie, and a bowl of soup. He's a really active guy who usually eats a ton of food. I see mashed potatoes, hummus, soup, and smoothies in his future. I'm not sure when he gets the herpst, but it's next.

I got my herbst put in during May and I'm supposed to have them for 6 weeks.. which already passed, but they never took them out. Any ways, does the herbst appliance have some sort of effect on your brain since it's bringing your lower jaw forward and your jaw is connected to your brain. Just wondering cause honestly I'd rather have a "not effected " brain than straight teeth

Just saying, you have to be pretty young; but no, the jaw is not attatched to the brain, So it won't affect anything.

No, I've had them for about 6 months and it doesn't hurt. It is sore for a little while but no pain. Eating is a little difficult until your jaw shifts after that its smooth sailing.

I actually just got a herbst today, and am I the only one where my lower jaw like... twitches every couple minutes? Not quite sure how to describe it, but every time it happens, I feel like my teeth are about to be ripped out of my skull. So yeah, it kind of hurts. A lot.

I got the Herbst Appliance 3 months ago and have about 4-5 more to go! during the first week, I chewed with my front teeth and tried a couple times with the back. It took a little getting used to and get this... the NIGHT after I got it put on, I have a band concert (I play the flute) and it SUCKED but I think I did alright. lol. one of the worst problems is that since I have all of this metal in my mouth, whenever I talk to my friends and say "S", I spit on them by accident ;{. Also, my jaw sometimes pops if I move it side to side but thats cuz it gets sore from just staying in the same spot for too long so I have to move it around. I hope anyone found this helpful!
-K
(P.S. have any pain killers like advil/tylenol/ibprophen/motrin etc. you will def need it!!!)

Wait... You can actually play the flute with this on? All notes sound weird and I can't even do the low notes! Please teach!!!
