How can I put an electric starter on a pull start Briggs and Stratton engine? Answered

I'm 50 and have a herniated disk in my back. It hurts me to start my chipper/shredder. I'd like to put an electric starter on it, but need guidance as to type of starter motor, how to attach a battery, etc.

well i am 14 and have back problems of my own and i thought up an idea that in theory should work i would attach a ribbed belt pully to the flywheel and have that go to an ac compressor clutch connected to an electronic motor now until or rather if that happens i just drill start my mower i have a bit that attaches to the chuck and a socket that is the same size nut holding the flywheel this method costed me about 4 dollars from harbor freight CAUTION: i am not liable/responsible for damage or injury to self if the socket is launched because it stated on the flywheel when the motor started or anything else happens

You have to check if your flywheel is geared for a starter motor. If there is a ring gear on the flywheel then you can but if there isn't you will have to call your local Briggs dealer to see if there is a conversion kit for your flywheel. Some Briggs flywheels are made to accept a plastic ring gear kit, most are not. Some motors you can also replace the flywheel with a geared one, again, most not so much. Then you will have to buy a starter and a battery and figure a way to keep the battery charged. Or you can try to put a snowblower starter motor on it like others suggested.

Thats a funny question, because just wescently I put a pull start on a electric Briggs. I guess I was just tired of buying a new battery every 6 months.

Last month I picked up a free snowblower, it had a 120 V AC electric starting motor (made by Tecumseh) attached to a 4 HP Briggs & Stratton engine. I spent the afternoon pulling the electric starter off and attaching it to the 5 HP B & S on another snowblower. I needed to tap a couple of holes on the 5 HP motor, and break off some sheet metal tabs on the shroud and tap a couple more holes on the shroud where the push button/power connector module mounts.. A similar electric starting motor was about $70 on TAS (That Auction Site). for example: http://cgi.ebay.com/Ariens-120-Volt-Electric-Starter-Kit-Tecumseh-/260552511325?cmd=ViewItem&pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3caa23cf5d http://cgi.ebay.com/TECUMSEH-ELECTRIC-STARTER-120-VOLTS-ENGINE-SNOW-BLOWER-/370397667638?cmd=ViewItem&pt=LH_DefaultDomain_2&hash=item563d6be136
