If you are using
Windows, Vegas Pro is recommended as Sony's premier video editing and
production software.

If you are on Mac,
iMovie and MovieMator Pro are the best choices. I personally prefer Video
Editor MovieMator Pro, as it accepts more formats you transferred from my
digital camera.

I know this question has already been answered, but I think I can give some advice.

The problem with consumer digital hard-disc camcorders is that they record in a cracked-up format, like .mod, that only allows editing to occur in a program that the camera manufacturer chooses, and that software usually comes with the camera and isn't any good. in order to edit in proprietary software, such as Final Cut, you need to convert the files into a format that can be read by said software. in the case of .mod files, mp4 720x480 at either 24 or 30 fps is good.

Choose the frame rate based on what you want it to look like afterwards. 24 progressive (24 fps) is basically film, and it will look like film. 30 interlaced (30 fps) will make the final look like a soap opera.

Note that if you use a progressive format, you might have to put a de-interlace filter on the clip.

hope this helps!
