How do I make a 1" x 1" 1/8" thick copper door go up and down? Answered

I am making a sculpture that has a 2" o.d. copper tube running down the middle. At the bottom of the tube I need to have a small door about 1" x 1" that will raise and lower on the outside of the tube to let balls enter and fill the tube. Does anyone know how I can do this? What type of motor, etc to use. Thanks, Marc


You didn't specify, but I'm assuming that you want it to move up and down on regular intervals, without a human operator. The simplest method I can think of is a crank and slider mechanism. The slider is the door, and the crank is a motor that simply runs constantly. The speed at which the door moved up and down could be varied by changing the speed at which the motor is run, or by attaching a gearbox or pulley to slow it down.

if you want it lightning fast : use electromagnet (attach a bit of steel to the door) if you want it slow but strong : screw that spins in place and the nut is attached to the door

I'm thinking the 2" tube with a round hole cut in it (for balls to enter), and a slightly larger sleeve wrapped around the tube which covers the hole, and slides back and forth to cover and open the hole.
