How do i put pictures on my computer without restarting it??? Answered

Every time i put pictures on my computer, i have to restart it again. Even when i put my SD card into the slot in my computer it doesn't detect it, but then i restart it and it detects it. I want it to be able to detect the SD card without me having to restart it. Help anyone???

Windows has a habit of trying to give external devices the same drive letter. You'll need to give the device a new drive letter. To do this:

> Connect the device to your PC

> Right-click on My Computer and select Manage.

> Select Disk Management

> Select  the drive you want to change

> Right-click on the drive in the list

> Click “Change Drive Letters and Paths"

> Click Change button

> Select an new unused drive letter from the drop down list

> Click Yes on the confirmation screen

If you have auto play enabled, you will get the normal pop up dialog asking what you want to do.

Thanks! So i put the SD card in, then do this?

i fixed the problem....

I hooked my camera up to the computer on a USB cord....

I was just taking the SD card out, and putting it in the computer. But now I hooked the entire camera up to the computer....

Oh, OK. I assumed you had tried that already from the question. Whoops. Shouldn't assume anything.

The SD may need to be inserted for the 'drive' to show up in the list to get a letter.

I fixed the problem.

BTW- thanks for my 3200th comment!

...and thanks for my 1748'th comment!

Having read the other comments - is this a cheap card reader or something better?

I had a cheap card reader that I took out because it stuffed-up some of my cards...

Are you running Windows Vista? This is a known issue with Vista, and there is a hotfix available. Go to Microsoft.com and install the most recent Service Pack, and that should fix it.

If you're not running Vista, post some more details, and somebody may be able to help you anyway.

no, I'm not on vista, and i don't know what version my computer is.....

When you start it up, what does the splash screen say? That will at least tell you what OS you're on. Or, Click on Start ==> All Programs ==> Accessories ==> Run, and then type winver in the box that appears. That will give you better information.

Do you get any kind of error message when you insert the card? Does it appear in Explorer at all? After you restart, do you get any messages about the card? Any info at all would be helpful.

I am on Windows XP.

And no, there isn't a message when I insert it, and doesn't appear in Explorer. I don't get any messages about the card, the only info i get is when i put the card into the computer after i restart it, a green light goes on on the computer thing. That's all i can say...

Try this.

  1. Open My Computer.
  2. Under Devices with Removable Storage, right-click the device you want, such as a digital camera or CD-ROM drive, and then click Properties.
  3. On the AutoPlay tab, click the multimedia content type you want to change.
  4. Under Actions, click the action you want Windows to perform when it detects the media type you selected.

Also you should be able to make the computer read the device by opening MY COMPUTER, then double clicking the device in the list.

If the device is not shown on the list then your computer is not installing it properly.  You can make it install by going into the "system tab" in the "control panel" then "hardware tab", click on "device manager" button then click on "Computer" in the list pick "Action" tool bar then pick "scan for hardware changes" in the menu.

Nope, it doesn't know that the memory card is in the computer, so i can't right click the device i want.
