How do you make a pop up with a wire edge, like a sun guard for the front car window? Answered

Hi, I want to make a pop up sail for my kayak.  I see that there is some type of metal edge that is sewn in.

I can't even figure out what to look up in Google.  It is a simple project.... for my mother-in-law to sew.  I just can't figure out what wire to buy and do I need to weld the ends together.

Thank you to anyone who can give me some advice on this.

If the spring steel is a bit expensive, and alternative might be to use flexible fiberglass or plastic rods around the same size. Long ones could be bowed fairly easily and could be sewn in without any "welding" .

Thanks for the info. I don't know that I have ever seen flexible fiberglass or plastic rods that are as long as I would need. They would need to be 10 to 12 feet long. Where mite you buy something like that? Thank you for your help and the fast reply.

Replacement tent poles. You can get both aluminum and fiberglass types.

You can join them with small metal tubes called ferrules. Look to kite-making suppliers.

You just need some thin spring steel wire. You might be able to get a cheap flat wire snake- not the spring coil wire- that plumbers use to unclog a drain or electricians use to pull wire through a conduit. You need something thicker than what is in those pop-up hampers. Good luck.

That's what I needed, a great idea. I have heard of spring steel but really had no idea what it is or how to get it. I figured it would "Spring" back into it's original position. Getting a wire snake is a great idea. Harbor Freight is good for cheap Chinese tools and I know they sell the flat wire snake, I think I have one for running wire in walls. Thanks again for the great suggestion.

just bend the ends of the wire and maybe wrap with electrical or duct tape to keep it from puncturing the fabric. They should not be a welded loop but just a rib that rides in the fabric channel. It has to slide a bit when you fold up the device.
