How to make Parking Barrier? Answered

I need to make a parking barrier (similar to the attached picture) that I can operate with a remote control.
What motor could I use?
How can I identify the torque needed?


Would a Stepper Motor with the following specs be suitable?

Step Angle (degrees) :1.8
2 Phase
Rated Voltage : 12V
Rated Current : 0.33A
Holding Torque : 2.3kg*cm

I won't be able to use a counter weight because I have very limited space. The size of the arm should 2.5 meters. I'm thinking about using aluminium rectangular tube for the arm

Using 1x2x.125 inch AL, you should need a motor with a stall torque > 28 lb-ft or 38 N-m.

Then you will need a bigger motor say 1 hp.

What size of arm do you need? What sort of materials will you be building the arm out of?

Your going to need a counter weighted barrier to minimise the motor torque required

2 limit switches for top and bottom

a motor with suitable gearing. The smaller the motor the slower the barrier will lift. I would expect 1/4 to 1/2 Hp would be Ok provided the gearing was suitable.

Depending on how you control it either manual switches, relays and timers or a small microprocessor will do the trick
