How to replace a potentiometer? Answered

There is a potentiometer on my $500+ vintage guitar pedal that i recently broke off. Any suggestions to glueing it or figuring out a way to put it back on? The knob is the only part that is off and i still have the knob.


Am I the only one reading this question as the knob broke off the pot?  "the knob is the only part that is off".

If that's the case, glue any parts of the knob back in place with CA (super krazy etc) glue.  To reattach it to the pot, it should be a friction fit, have a screw in the side, or be glued on.  I recommend monster glue.  That stuff sticks to anything.

That said; new pot knobs can be found - as other suggest - based on the size, length, and shape of the axle.

You'll need to open the pedal and remove the pot, replacing it with one that has the same specs.  You will need to match:

the value (ie. 10k, 100k, 500k)
the type (linear or logarithmic)
the shaft size (ie. 1/4")
shaft length (ie. 1/2")
shaft type (ie. smooth, knurled)
the mounting hole size (ie. 3/8")

If you're not comfortable doing this yourself, a decent musical instruments store should be able to do it for you.

Replace the pot. They don't last forever. YOu may even find a new pot sounds better.

First off, you really need to think about screwing with a $500 vintage anything. That said, you'd probably get a better answer over at any of the guitar pedal worship sites.

All that said, the Pot is one of the few things in those that you can still get and are still made the same way. If you can get the specs off of it and a rough guesstiment of the year made, you're probably better off eBay-ing yourself a replacement pot.

Finally, if you don't feel like doing that, I'm going to assume that you sheared off the shaft on the pot. To fix this you'll need to pull out the pot and superglue the shaft back on. You will need to use an extraordinarily tiny amount of CA to do this, and not allow any of it to run down the shaft (hint: do the gluing upside-down). Make sure the two part go together in one motion and don't move them while the CA sets.
