Portable indoor is going to be tough.  You can't burn fuels like that indoors without providing venting to the outside.  They can put off carbon monoxide and that tends to kill people in the house.  Then you get law suits etc.

If you can figure out a way to vent them then you might have a plan.

I believe they all give off carbon monoxide.  That could be checked up on.

Do you have a realistic budget? If you have some woodworking skills, you can look on craigslist for an electric fireplace. Plan on paying between $50 and $200. At best you'll get something you can just clean up. But if you have some skills, pop out the electric part and build your own wooden surround for it, you know, build your own mantel for your new fireplace.

I'm in the process of looking for one right now and I plan on spending about $200 total.
