I'm interested in steam power, and recently got the idea to built a steam powered car. Answered

Where can I go to either buy or build a steam engine capable of powering a very light-weight vehicle? The cheaper the better.

The only steam engine that you might be able to locate to be suitable for an automobile would be a Stanley engine. However, such an engine in good operating condition would very expensive indeed. If you think that's bad, then consider the costs of a boiler. Short answer is to forget about the idea unless you have at least 100K lying around plus some impressive fabrication skills.

If you want to build your own system I would suggest looking at Mythbusters projects for ideas. Water boilers seem to make good compression tanks but be careful in one of there episodes you can see how dangerous they can be. After you would put the engine in this vehicle I'm not sure it will be classified as a light-weight vehicle any more.

Steam cars are not new. They also have their drawbacks.

Buy more than likely you can't - make? Well you could and there are lots of web sites that may/wil offer different options on this BUT.

you need to consider a number of things.

It isn't going to be cheap
Generating high pressure steam is dangerous, you need to know and understand what your doing and is in most countries subject to various legal constraints.
Making the steam engine will be a challenge - making a safe and suitable car to put it in will be as big a challenge.
One of the bigest issues with steam power is that it isn't instant. Although Flash boilers do a good job it still isn't instant. You would need to get steam up - perhaps 1/2 an hour before you can go anywhere - is that going to be practical.

Look up the Stanley Steam car.

.  +1.
.  Possible? Yes. Practical? No.
.  Build a better boiler and they will beat a path to your door.
