This is very good question. To be honest, it’s not entirely clear from my research what the true answer to this is. I think the common opinion would be, yes, it's safe enough, but a lot of things we put on our skin may not be truly safe. It is possible that the chemicals used in tanning could cause a reaction in some people, especially if sweating is involved, but I've never hard of this happening. There's no question that, unfortunately, chrome tanning uses some nasty chemicals that are really harmful to the environment and the people who work at tanneries, but most of these chemicals are neutralized or removed during the tanning process. To be on the safe side, it probably isn't great to have large pieces of leather against your skin all the time, but people definitely do it regularly with leather bracelets, straps etc. Leather garments, though, are usually lined with fabric so the leather itself isn’t touching your skin, which is also more comfortable. With accessories, I think it’s really not something you need to worry about, but if you are concerned, you might want to try using brain tanned leather which is made with all naturally occurring chemicals, or using veg tanned leather and dying it yourself with non toxic dyes.
