Yes, Sadly dell uses a special connector on their laptops, You can't use a usb cd/dvd drive only dell's special drive with dell's special media cable. Due to this I have a dell laptop I can't use due to the fact to buy the drive and cable from ebay would cost more than the laptop and it would be in fact cheaper to buy my spare laptop again on ebay that comes with the drive :S One of the reasons I hate dell.

Your laptop is damaged in some way? That it needs to be reformatted might have something to do with why the external drive doesn't work.
Ask a new question explaining exactly what is wrong with the laptop and "how do I fix it?" - adding that you don't have the optical drives working. I'd expect someone to give some help / advice.

lemonie, The optical drive is really not working anymore that is why i bought an external drive in lieu of its built in drive until it's contaminated and needs to be reformat and now since the drive doesn,t work anymore it can't be reformat somebody adviced to download the drivers and burn it. Is there another way of doing this rather than the latter/

I know about the drives, I advised that you should ask a new question explaining exactly what is wrong with the laptop and "how do I fix it?" - adding that you don't have the optical drives working.

I don't know why you want/need to reformat this machine, so I'm not able to offer much advice at the moment. But I'd expect someone to give some help / advice on a new question (that explains why reformat)
