Is making a Linux-based OS and selling it legal as well as copyrighting certain included software that I make? Answered

I would like to know before I begin work on my dream OS If I cant base it on Linux can I base it on Unix?

Its hardly fair to do get all the work you want for free, without contributing to the eco-system.

Have you tried googling any of this stuff? Not a lot of people write
their own OS's these days since the time-cost vs reward is so sewed the
wrong way in most cases. Casting a wider net of results will probably get you the info you need faster.

It also can get pretty complex when you start digging into copyright code and IP Law, especially around the various free licenses in use.

You can base it on whatever you like but you have to stick to the license.
You can't just combine a bunch of freeware or open source code and sell it.
No problem with your own code.

Do you have a list of do's and dont's for making a OS based on Linux or Unix?

If I just create a Linux distro instead then what do I do about my code that I want to be closed source?
